Replacement of an interior door handle/pull on a 2024 Model X Plaid. Note that the Model X uses electronic door releases as the primary opening method — the 'interior handle' is typically the trim-mounted pull/grip assembly, not a mechanical latch cable handle as in conventional vehicles.

Warnings

⚠️Falcon Wing rear doors contain powered actuators, sensors, and pinch detection. Never work on or near a Falcon door without first disabling it via the touchscreen door menu AND disconnecting the 12V battery. A self-actuating door can cause crushing injury.
Model X doors use electronic releases as the primary opening method. After 12V disconnect, the doors cannot be electronically opened from inside or outside — open and prop the door BEFORE disconnecting the 12V.
Aluminum body panels — do not pry against the door skin with metal tools and do not strike with a hammer. Use plastic trim tools only.
ℹ️Interior door cards on Model X contain wiring for ambient lighting, speakers, window switches, and (front doors) the electronic door release switch. Do not pull the panel free without disconnecting connectors first.
If you encounter ANY orange cabling or HV component while servicing the door, STOP — these do not belong in the door and indicate a misrouted harness or prior damage. Consult a Tesla-certified technician.

Tools required

Plastic trim removal tool set (non-marring)Essential
Torx bit set (T20/T25/T30)Essential
Phillips and flat-blade screwdrivers
Calibrated torque driver (1–10 Nm range)Essential
Calibrated torque wrench (5–30 Nm range)Essential
Painter's tape (to protect paint and trim edges)
Soft microfiber blanket or fender cover

Parts

  • Interior door handle / pull assembly (Model X-specific, side-correct) × 1 — Tesla OEM interior door pull — verify left/right and trim color/material before ordering
  • Replacement trim clips (door card retention clips) × 6 — Manufacturer-specified door card clip — replace any damaged on removal

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Open the affected door fully and prop it in the open position BEFORE disconnecting the 12V — once 12V is removed, electronic releases will not function.
  4. If working on a rear Falcon Wing door: use the touchscreen Service Mode (or door menu) to disable/lock the Falcon door, then manually position it. Support the door so it cannot fall.
  5. Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery in the frunk (lift frunk liner, disconnect negative terminal first; insulate the terminal).
  6. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  7. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  8. Lower the affected door's window approximately 2 inches (do this before 12V disconnect) to ease door card removal — optional but recommended.
  9. Lay a soft cover on the door sill and seat to protect interior trim while the door card is staged.

Procedure

  1. 1
Identify handle type and confirm correct replacement part
Confirm whether the job is the soft pull/grab handle on the door card, or the electronic release switch trim. Compare the new part to the old for L/R orientation and trim finish before disassembly.
  2. 2
    Remove door card fasteners
Locate and remove the screws hidden behind any trim plugs along the lower and trailing edges of the door card. Use a plastic trim tool to lift the plugs without scratching. Keep fasteners organized by location.
  3. 3
Release the door card from the door shell
Starting at a lower corner, use a wide plastic trim tool to release the perimeter retention clips. Work around the bottom and up both sides. Lift the card upward at the end to disengage the upper window-belt hook.
Do not yank the panel — internal connectors are still attached. Damage to the wiring will disable window controls and the electronic door release.
  4. 4
    Disconnect electrical connectors
Tilt the door card outward enough to access the back. Disconnect connectors for the window/mirror switch pack, ambient lighting, speaker, and (front doors) the electronic door release switch. Photograph connector positions for reassembly.
  5. 5
Set the door card on a protected surface
Place the panel face-up on a clean blanket. Inspect the perimeter clips; replace any that are cracked or remained in the door shell.
  6. 6
Remove the interior handle / pull assembly
Remove the fasteners securing the interior pull handle to the door card substrate. On Model X these are typically Torx screws accessed from the rear of the panel. Note any alignment tabs or foam gaskets.

  7. 7
    Transfer trim/escutcheon if applicable
If the new handle ships without the decorative escutcheon or finisher, transfer it from the old handle. Inspect for cracked tabs.
  8. 8
    Install the new handle assembly
Position the new handle to the door card, ensure foam/gasket is seated, and install fasteners hand-tight, then torque.

  9. 9
Inspect any associated bracketry or sensor mounts
If the handle assembly includes or is adjacent to a switch bracket or sensor mount, verify those fasteners are tight to OEM specification before reinstalling the door card.

    Sensor Bolts11 Nm (8 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Reconnect all electrical connectors removed in Step 4 — verify each clicks fully home.
  2. Hook the upper edge of the door card over the window belt molding first, then align perimeter clips to their holes.
  3. Press firmly around the perimeter to seat each clip; do not strike the panel.
  4. Reinstall perimeter screws and trim plugs.
  5. Reconnect the 12V battery (negative last). Close the frunk.
  6. If a Falcon door was disabled in Service Mode, re-enable it via the touchscreen.
  7. Cycle the window fully up and down to allow the window controller to relearn end stops if needed.

Verification

  • Operate the interior door release (front doors) — verify the door unlatches electronically on the first press.
  • Verify the manual mechanical release (front doors, located forward of the window switches) still functions as a backup.
  • Test window up/down, mirror controls, ambient lighting, and door speaker to confirm all connectors are properly reseated.
  • On rear Falcon Wing doors: cycle the door open and closed using the touchscreen and the exterior/interior controls. Confirm no obstruction faults, no abnormal noise, and that pinch sensors operate (door reverses on light resistance).
  • Inspect the door card seam for even gaps and confirm no clips remained in the door shell.
  • Check the touchscreen for any door, window, or body control alerts — clear any transient faults by locking/unlocking the vehicle once.
  • While the door card is off is an opportune time to note other 2-year Tesla service items: cabin air filter (every 2 years, or every 3 years if HEPA-equipped), brake fluid test (every 2 years), and tire rotation (every ~6,250 mi).
