Replacement of the multifunction turn signal stalk on a 2024 Model X Plaid. Note: 2024 Model X Plaid vehicles equipped with the yoke or new round wheel may use capacitive steering wheel buttons instead of a column stalk — verify your vehicle has a physical stalk before ordering parts.
Warnings
⚠️2024 Model X has a Falcon Wing door system and multiple SRS airbag circuits routed through the steering column area. Disconnecting the 12V LV battery and waiting before working near the column is mandatory to prevent inadvertent airbag deployment.
⚠️Do NOT pierce, cut, or pry against any orange high-voltage cable. None should be present in the column area, but if you see one — STOP.
⚠Some 2024 Model X Plaid vehicles use capacitive touch controls on the yoke/round wheel instead of a stalk. Confirm your vehicle has a physical stalk before disassembly.
⚠The clockspring (SRS coil) sits directly behind the stalk assembly. Do not rotate the steering shaft while the wheel is removed or the clockspring is disconnected — centering it incorrectly will trigger SRS faults.
ℹ️Aluminum body and trim — do not strike with a metal hammer. Use plastic trim tools only.
Tools required
Trim removal tool set (plastic, non-marring)Essential
Torx bit set (T20/T25/T30)Essential
Torque wrench (1–15 Nm range)Essential
10mm socket and ratchetEssential
ESD-safe wrist strap
Insulated gloves (for 12V disconnect)
Parts
- Turn signal / multifunction stalk switch assembly × 1 — Tesla Model X (2021+ refresh) left-side column stalk — verify exact part by VIN with Tesla Parts
- 12V battery terminal cover (if damaged on removal) × 1 — OEM replacement as needed
Preparation
- Park on level ground, place in P, engage the parking brake.
- Exit ALL doors with the key fob/card carried away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
- Open the frunk and disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery negative terminal (frunk location, similar to Model S). Isolate and insulate the terminal so it cannot reconnect.
- DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
- If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
- Wait an additional 2 minutes after 12V disconnect to allow SRS capacitors to fully discharge before working near the steering column.
- Center the steering wheel and lock it straight-ahead (apply masking tape from wheel to dash as a visual reference) so the SRS clockspring is not disturbed.
- Tilt and telescope the steering column fully out and down (do this BEFORE disconnecting 12V — the column adjusts electrically) to gain working clearance.
- Confirm the vehicle is equipped with a physical column stalk (not capacitive yoke buttons) before continuing.
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column coverUsing a plastic trim tool, release the lower half of the steering column shroud. Locate and remove the retaining screws (typically Torx) on the underside of the column cover. Lower the bottom shroud away from the column.Torque specSteering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 2Remove upper steering column coverWith the lower shroud removed, unclip the upper shroud from its retaining tabs. Work gently around the perimeter to avoid breaking plastic clips. Set both halves aside.⚠Tabs are brittle; do not pry against the painted column collar.Torque specSteering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 3Identify the stalk assemblyWith shrouds removed, locate the left-hand multifunction stalk mounted to the column-mounted switch carrier (behind the SRS clockspring). Note the routing of its wiring harness and connector orientation before disturbing anything.⚠Do NOT rotate the steering shaft. The clockspring must remain centered.
- 4Disconnect the stalk electrical connectorRelease the locking tab on the stalk's harness connector and unplug it. If the connector has a secondary lock (CPA), lift it first. Inspect pins for corrosion or damage.
- 5Release the stalk from the switch carrierThe stalk is retained either by a small set screw or a spring clip on the carrier (varies by build). Remove the manufacturer-specified retaining fastener and slide the stalk straight out of the carrier. Do not pull at an angle — internal tabs can break.ℹ️If a retainer style differs from expected, refer to the Tesla Service Manual rather than forcing the assembly.Torque specSwitch Mounting Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 6Compare old to new stalkPlace the removed stalk next to the replacement. Confirm connector keying, lever length, button layout, and detent feel match. A mismatched stalk will not be coded correctly to the vehicle.
- 7Install new stalk into carrierAlign the new stalk with the carrier keyway and slide it in until it fully seats. Install the retaining fastener and torque it per the verified specification.Torque specSwitch Mounting Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 8Reconnect electrical connectorPlug the harness connector into the new stalk until the primary latch clicks. Engage the secondary lock (CPA) if equipped. Verify the harness is routed clear of any moving column components.
Reassembly
- Reinstall the upper column shroud, ensuring all clips engage fully.
- Reinstall the lower column shroud and torque its fasteners per 'Steering Column Covers' spec.
- Verify the steering wheel is still centered and the clockspring has not rotated.
- Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal in the frunk. Torque to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual.
- Close the frunk.
Verification
- Power up the vehicle by sitting in the driver's seat with the key fob/card. Allow the MCU and instrument cluster to fully boot.
- Check the touchscreen for any new fault messages (e.g., 'Steering assist reduced', SRS warning, BCM communication faults). Clear any transient alerts after a key cycle.
- Test left turn signal (single tap and full-detent), right turn signal, lane-change tap function, and high-beam flash-to-pass.
- Test windshield wiper functions if the same stalk controls wipers on this build (single wipe, intermittent, low, high, washer spray).
- Test cruise control / Autopilot engagement via the stalk if equipped — verify single-pull and double-pull behaviors match expected functions on the touchscreen.
- Drive the vehicle briefly and confirm turn signals self-cancel after a turn, and that no SRS or steering warnings appear on the cluster.
- If any persistent fault remains (especially SRS or steering-angle), the vehicle may require Tesla Toolbox calibration — STOP and refer to a Tesla-certified technician.
- Note: This job is not part of any scheduled Tesla maintenance interval, but while the column shrouds are off it is a good time to confirm the cabin air filter (2-year interval) and brake fluid (2-year interval) are not overdue.
