Replacement of the windshield washer fluid pump on a 2024 Tesla Model X Plaid. The pump is mounted in the washer fluid reservoir, accessed from the front wheel well or frunk area depending on service approach.

Warnings

⚠️Falcon Wing doors: do not work near or under an unsupported open Falcon door. Their actuators can move unexpectedly if 12V is reconnected or if a door fault is cleared. Keep doors closed during this procedure.
Aluminum body and aluminum subframe components — do not strike with a steel hammer. Use plastic trim tools to avoid cosmetic and structural damage.
Washer fluid is conductive and slightly corrosive to wiring connectors. Catch all spillage and avoid letting fluid drip onto control modules in the frunk area or wheel well.
ℹ️On Model X, the washer reservoir is shared and large (~3.5 qt). Drain or siphon the reservoir before removing the pump to avoid a major spill.

Parts

  • Windshield washer pump (Model X Plaid OEM-spec) × 1 — Tesla-specified washer pump assembly for 2024 Model X — confirm by VIN
  • Washer pump grommet/seal × 1 — OEM rubber grommet — replace if torn or hardened

Fluids

  • Windshield Washer Fluid — 3.5 qt

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery located in the frunk (similar position to Model S). Follow the manufacturer-specified frunk access and 12V disconnect procedure.
  4. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  5. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Keep both Falcon Wing doors fully closed for the duration of this job. Do not place any tools or your body within their swing path.
  7. Turn the front wheels to provide access to the wheel-well liner on the side where the washer reservoir/pump is located.
  8. Have a drain pan and absorbent pads ready — the reservoir holds up to ~3.5 qt of washer fluid.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access the washer pump area
Remove the front wheel-well liner fasteners on the side where the washer pump is located using a plastic push-pin tool. Pull back the liner enough to expose the lower portion of the washer fluid reservoir and the pump body. On Model X, the pump protrudes from the side of the reservoir near the bottom.
Plastic clips on Tesla wheel-well liners are brittle in cold weather — warm the area or work slowly to avoid breaking them.
  2. 2
Drain or siphon the washer reservoir
Place a clean drain pan under the pump location. Either siphon the washer fluid out from the filler neck in the frunk, or be prepared to catch the full reservoir contents when the pump is removed. Save the fluid in a clean container if you intend to reuse it.
  3. 3
    Disconnect the pump electrical connector
Locate the electrical connector on the washer pump. Press the locking tab and gently pull the connector straight off. Inspect the connector for corrosion or washer fluid residue and clean if necessary.
Do not pull on the wires — pull on the connector body only. Tesla low-voltage connectors are easily damaged.
  4. 4
    Disconnect the washer fluid hose(s)
Carefully detach the washer hose(s) from the pump outlet. Some hoses use a friction fit, others a small clip. Have the drain pan positioned to catch residual fluid. Note hose orientation if there are multiple outlets (front and rear washer circuits).
  5. 5
Remove the pump from the reservoir
Grasp the pump body and pull it straight out of the reservoir grommet with a slight twisting motion. The pump is sealed only by a rubber grommet — no fasteners. Expect remaining fluid to discharge from the grommet hole; allow it to fully drain into the pan.
Do not pry against the reservoir wall with metal tools — the plastic reservoir on Model X can crack and is expensive to replace.
  6. 6
    Inspect and replace the grommet
Remove the rubber grommet from the reservoir opening. Inspect for cracks, hardening, or deformation. Replace with a new grommet (recommended any time the pump is disturbed) to prevent leaks. Lightly lubricate the new grommet with a drop of fresh washer fluid before installation — do not use petroleum-based lubricants.

Reassembly

  1. Install the new (or inspected) grommet firmly into the reservoir opening, ensuring it is fully seated.
  2. Press the new washer pump straight into the grommet until it bottoms out. It should feel snug with no wobble.
  3. Reconnect the washer hose(s) to the correct pump outlet(s), matching the original orientation (front vs. rear washer circuits).
  4. Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks/locks.
  5. Reinstall the wheel-well liner and secure all push-pin fasteners. Replace any broken clips.
  6. Refill the washer reservoir from the frunk filler neck with up to 3.5 qt of windshield washer fluid appropriate for the climate (use a winter-rated fluid in freezing conditions to avoid pump and line damage).
  7. Reconnect the 12V low-voltage battery per the manufacturer-specified procedure. Torque the battery terminal bolts to specification.
  8. Close the frunk.

Verification

  • With the vehicle awake, activate the front washer from the steering wheel stalk/touchscreen control. Confirm a strong, even spray pattern from both front nozzles.
  • Activate the rear washer (via wiper menu) and confirm rear spray operation if equipped.
  • Inspect the pump area in the wheel well for any drips or seepage around the grommet after 2-3 actuation cycles.
  • Check the touchscreen Service menu for any washer-related alerts or low-fluid warnings; clear/refill as needed.
  • Top off the washer reservoir to the full mark after initial test (lines may have absorbed some fluid).
