Replace the panoramic glass roof shade/sunroof motor on a 2024 Model Y Performance. Note: the Model Y has a fixed panoramic glass roof — there is no opening sunroof, only a powered sunshade in some configurations. This procedure covers the powered shade motor assembly accessed via the headliner.
Warnings
⚠️The Model Y has a single-piece glass roof bonded to the body. Do NOT attempt to remove or pry on the glass — it is structural and not field-serviceable. This procedure addresses only the internal powered shade motor.
⚠Headliner removal on Model Y is unusually involved — it requires removing pillar trims, grab handles, sun visors, and overhead console. The headliner is large and creases easily. Use a helper.
⚠If equipped, the headliner contains the cabin microphone, dome lighting, and possibly antenna routing. Disconnect connectors gently; tabs are fragile.
ℹ️Confirm before purchasing parts: not all 2024 Model Y trims have a powered sunshade. If the vehicle has only a fixed glass roof with no shade, there is no sunroof motor to replace.

Preparation
- Park on level ground, place in P, and engage the parking brake.
- Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.

Reassembly

- Reinstall C-pillar, B-pillar upper, and A-pillar trims, ensuring all clips fully seat and the airbag tethers on the A-pillars are properly reattached.
- Reinstall the upper seatbelt anchor bolts and torque to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual. This is a safety-critical fastener.
- Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal and torque to spec.
- Allow the vehicle to fully wake and complete its boot sequence (can take 1-2 minutes).
Verification
