Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Allow engine to cool to warm temperature if recently operated
  3. Gather all tools, parts, and fluids before beginning
  4. Verify correct oil filter and air filters for 2.5L 4-cylinder engine
  5. Locate oil drain plug, oil filter, and engine air filter box for familiarization

Procedure

  1. 1
    Raise and secure vehicle
Raise front of vehicle using floor jack at designated jacking points. Secure with jack stands under frame rails. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Ensure vehicle is stable before proceeding.
  2. 2
    Remove engine splash shield
Remove plastic clips and screws securing engine splash shield to access oil drain plug and oil filter. Some models have small access door for drain plug only. Set fasteners aside for reinstallation.
  3. 3
    Drain engine oil
Position drain pan under oil drain plug. Using appropriate socket, loosen drain plug and allow oil to drain completely (approximately 5-10 minutes). Remove old crush washer from drain plug and clean plug threads. Install new crush washer on drain plug.
Oil may be hot enough to cause burns even after 30 minute cool-down period. Wear gloves and use caution.
  4. 4
    Remove oil filter
Move drain pan under oil filter location (front passenger side of engine). Use oil filter wrench to remove filter by turning counterclockwise. Allow remaining oil to drain from filter housing. Clean filter mounting surface with clean rag.
  5. 5
    Install new oil filter
Apply thin coat of clean engine oil to rubber gasket on new oil filter. Thread filter onto mounting boss by hand, turning clockwise. Once gasket contacts mounting surface, turn an additional 3/4 turn by hand. Do not use filter wrench for installation.
  6. 6
Reinstall drain plug and lower vehicle
Thread oil drain plug with new crush washer into oil pan by hand, then torque to specification. Reinstall splash shield with all clips and screws. Lower vehicle from jack stands and remove jack.
  7. 7
    Fill engine with oil
Remove oil filler cap on top of engine (marked with oil can symbol). Insert funnel and add 4.5 quarts of Toyota Genuine 0W-20 oil initially. Wait 2 minutes for oil to settle, then check dipstick. Add remaining oil in small increments until level reaches between MIN and MAX marks on dipstick. Total capacity is 5.0 quarts with filter change.
  8. 8
    Replace engine air filter
Open hood and locate air filter housing on passenger side of engine bay. Release clips securing air box cover. Lift cover and remove old engine air filter. Clean any debris from inside air box with clean rag. Install new filter ensuring proper seating and directional arrow (if present) points toward engine. Close cover and secure clips.
  9. 9
    Replace cabin air filter
Open glove box and remove contents. Squeeze sides of glove box to release stops and lower fully. Remove cabin air filter access door (press tabs or lift clips). Slide out old cabin filter noting airflow direction arrows. Install new filter matching airflow direction (arrows typically point down). Reinstall access door and glove box.
  10. 10
Check and top off all fluid levels
With engine cold, check and top off the following fluids as needed: engine coolant (pink Super Long Life Coolant in overflow reservoir), brake fluid (DOT 3 in master cylinder reservoir - do not overfill), windshield washer fluid, and power steering fluid (if equipped - some 2012-2017 models use electric power steering). Check transmission fluid level only if dipstick is present; many models require dealer scan tool for accurate ATF level check.
  11. 11
Inspect belts, hoses, and underhood components
Visually inspect drive belt for cracks, glazing, or fraying. Check all cooling system hoses for cracks, soft spots, or leaks. Inspect battery terminals for corrosion and ensure connections are tight. Look for any fluid leaks or unusual wear on visible components.
  12. 12
Check tire pressures and rotate tires
Check all tire pressures including spare. Inflate to pressure listed on driver door jamb sticker (typically 32-35 PSI). For tire rotation on FWD Camry, move front tires to rear on same sides, and rear tires to front opposite sides (rear left to front right, rear right to front left). Torque lug nuts in star pattern to specification.
  13. 13
Start engine and check for leaks
Start engine and allow to idle. Monitor oil pressure warning light (should extinguish within 3-5 seconds). Let engine run for 5 minutes while checking for oil leaks around drain plug and filter. Turn off engine, wait 5 minutes, then recheck oil level on dipstick and top off if needed to reach MAX mark.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all engine covers and splash shields are properly reinstalled
  2. Verify oil filler cap is securely tightened
  3. Confirm glove box and air filter housing are properly secured
  4. Double-check that no tools or rags were left in engine bay

Verification

  • Start engine and verify no warning lights remain illuminated after 10 seconds
  • Check for oil leaks around drain plug and filter after 5-minute idle period
  • Verify oil level is at MAX mark on dipstick with engine off and cool
  • Confirm all fluid reservoirs are at proper levels
  • Test drive vehicle briefly and recheck for leaks afterward
  • Reset maintenance reminder light using instrument cluster controls if equipped
  • Record service in vehicle maintenance log with date and mileage
