Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Allow engine to cool completely (minimum 2 hours if recently driven)
- Gather all tools, parts, and fluids before starting
- Disconnect negative battery cable to reset maintenance reminder after service
- Raise front of vehicle with floor jack and secure on jack stands at front subframe jacking points
- Remove engine splash shield (multiple 10mm bolts and plastic clips)
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
Procedure
- 1Drain engine oilPosition drain pan beneath oil pan. Locate 14mm oil drain plug on driver side of oil pan. Remove drain plug and allow oil to drain completely (approximately 10 minutes). Inspect drain plug threads and oil pan threads for damage. Discard old crush washer and install new crush washer on drain plug.
- 2Replace oil filterLocate cartridge-style oil filter housing on front of engine block, passenger side. Use oil filter wrench to loosen housing cap (turn counterclockwise). Remove old filter cartridge and O-rings from housing. Clean housing thoroughly with shop rag. Install new O-rings (provided with filter) and new filter cartridge. Hand-tighten housing cap, then snug with filter wrench (do not over-tighten).
- 3Refill engine oilLower vehicle temporarily for oil fill. Remove oil filler cap on top of engine (marked with oil can symbol). Using funnel, add 4.5 quarts of Toyota Genuine 0W-20 oil. Install filler cap. Start engine and allow to run for 30 seconds, then shut off. Wait 5 minutes for oil to settle. Check dipstick and add remaining oil to reach full mark (between low and full indicators). Verify no leaks at drain plug or filter housing.
- 4Replace engine air filterOpen hood and locate air filter housing on driver side of engine bay. Release four clips securing air box cover. Lift cover and remove old air filter element. Clean any debris from air box housing with damp rag. Install new air filter ensuring proper seating in housing. Reinstall cover and secure all four clips.
- 5Replace cabin air filterOpen glove box and remove contents. Squeeze sides of glove box inward to release stoppers and lower fully. Remove cabin air filter cover (squeeze tabs on sides). Slide out old cabin air filter noting airflow direction arrow. Install new filter with airflow arrow pointing toward rear of vehicle. Reinstall filter cover and glove box.
- 6Replace spark plugsRemove plastic engine cover by pulling upward on four rubber grommets. Locate four ignition coils on top of valve cover. Disconnect electrical connector from each coil (squeeze tab and pull). Remove single 10mm bolt securing each coil. Pull coils straight up and out of spark plug wells. Using spark plug socket with extension, remove all four spark plugs. Inspect old plugs for abnormal wear or fouling. Gap new iridium plugs to 0.043 inches (1.1mm). Apply small amount of anti-seize to plug threads (avoid electrode area). Install new plugs hand-tight, then torque to 18 Nm (13 lb-ft) - torque wrench only, do not over-tighten. Reinstall ignition coils and secure with bolts. Reconnect all electrical connectors.
- 7Inspect drive beltsVisually inspect serpentine drive belt for cracks, fraying, glazing, or missing chunks. Check belt tension by pressing on longest span between pulleys - should deflect approximately 1/4 inch with moderate thumb pressure. If belt shows excessive wear or damage, replacement is required. Inspect belt tensioner pulley for smooth rotation and any noise.
- 8Inspect brake systemRemove all four wheels. Inspect brake pads through caliper opening - minimum pad thickness is 2mm (replace if at or below 3mm). Check brake rotors for scoring, excessive rust, or hot spots. Inspect brake lines and hoses for cracks, leaks, or damage. Check brake fluid level in reservoir (should be between MIN and MAX) and inspect fluid color (should be clear to light amber, not dark brown). Verify no leaks at calipers or wheel cylinders.
- 9Rotate tires and inspectFollowing front-wheel-drive rotation pattern, move front wheels to rear (same sides) and rear wheels to front (crossing sides - left rear to right front, right rear to left front). Inspect all tires for abnormal wear patterns, cuts, bulges, or embedded objects. Check tread depth with gauge (minimum legal is 2/32 inch, replace at 4/32 for safety). Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts in star pattern.
- 10Inspect cooling systemWith engine cold, inspect coolant level in overflow reservoir - should be at FULL line. Visually inspect all coolant hoses for cracks, soft spots, or leaks. Check radiator for damage or leaks. Inspect radiator cap seal for deterioration. Pressure test cooling system if any concerns noted. Toyota Super Long Life Coolant should be pink in color - if brown or rusty, cooling system flush is recommended.
- 11Inspect suspension and steeringWith vehicle raised, inspect all suspension components including struts, springs, control arms, and ball joints for leaks, damage, or excessive wear. Check tie rod ends and steering rack boots for tears or leaks. Grasp each front wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock positions and attempt to rock - excessive movement indicates worn ball joints or wheel bearings. Check all CV axle boots for tears or grease leaks.
- 12Inspect exhaust systemVisually inspect entire exhaust system from manifold to tailpipe for leaks, damage, rust perforation, or loose hangers. Pay special attention to flex pipe section near catalytic converter as this is common failure point. Check all rubber exhaust hangers for deterioration. Start engine briefly and listen for exhaust leaks.
- 13Check all fluid levelsWith engine cold, verify coolant level at FULL mark on overflow tank. Check brake fluid level between MIN and MAX. Check power steering fluid level if equipped (pink cap on reservoir, should be at FULL COLD line). Verify windshield washer fluid is full - top off as needed. Check automatic transmission fluid level with engine at operating temperature, running in Park on level surface - fluid should be in HOT range on dipstick and bright red in color.
- 14Final inspections and service resetReinstall engine splash shield. Lower vehicle from jack stands. Set tire pressures to specification on door jamb placard (typically 32-35 PSI cold). Reconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition to ON position (do not start) and press odometer reset button until maintenance light begins flashing, then hold until light resets. Start engine and verify no warning lights. Test drive vehicle and verify normal operation.
