This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the negative battery cable on a 2012-2017 Toyota Camry with the 2.5L I4 engine, including all ground connections.

Warnings

Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require relearning of power window auto-up/down functions.
Ensure ignition is OFF and all accessories are turned off before disconnecting battery.
ℹ️If equipped with an alarm or aftermarket security system, ensure you have the security code before disconnecting battery.

Parts

  • Negative battery cable assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
  3. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  4. Locate battery in engine compartment on driver side
  5. Allow engine to cool if recently operated

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect negative battery terminal
Using a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt (marked with minus sign or BLACK color). Do not remove bolt completely, just loosen enough to lift terminal off battery post. Remove terminal from post and position away from battery to prevent accidental contact.
Always disconnect negative terminal first to prevent short circuit risks.
  2. 2
    Remove battery hold-down (if necessary)
If access is limited, remove the battery hold-down bracket using a 10mm socket. Remove the hold-down bolt completely and lift bracket away. Set battery aside in safe location if removal is required for cable access.
ℹ️Battery weighs approximately 40 lbs - use proper lifting technique.
  3. 3
    Locate primary ground connection point
Follow the negative cable from the battery terminal down to the body/frame ground point on the driver side of the engine bay. The primary ground strap connects to the chassis below the battery tray area.
  4. 4
    Remove chassis ground connection
Using a 12mm socket, remove the bolt securing the negative cable ground strap to the chassis. Note the exact position and any other wires sharing this ground point. Clean the contact surfaces with a wire brush if corrosion is present.
ℹ️Multiple ground wires may share this connection point - note their arrangement for reinstallation.

  5. 5
Disconnect engine block ground (if applicable)
Trace the negative cable to locate any secondary ground connections to the engine block or transmission. Remove the bolt(s) securing these ground connections using appropriate socket (typically 10mm or 12mm). Clean contact surfaces thoroughly.

    Ground Cable Bolt14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove old negative battery cable
Once all ground connections are disconnected, carefully route the old negative battery cable out from the engine bay. Note the cable routing path, any clips or retainers holding it in place, and remove these as needed.
  7. 7
    Prepare and route new cable
Compare new cable to old cable to verify correct part. Route the new negative battery cable following the exact same path as the original, ensuring it does not contact any sharp edges, hot surfaces, or moving components. Reinstall any cable clips or retainers.
  8. 8
Install engine and chassis ground connections
Connect the ground strap to the chassis ground point first, ensuring the mating surface is clean and bare metal is visible. Install bolt finger-tight. Then connect any engine block ground connections, also finger-tight initially. Verify all ground wires are properly stacked in their original order.
Ensure all mating surfaces are clean and free of paint, rust, or corrosion for proper ground connection.

    Torque ground connections
Using a torque wrench, tighten the chassis ground strap bolt to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft). Tighten any engine ground cable bolts to 14 Nm (10 lb-ft). Verify connections are secure but do not overtighten.

    Reinstall battery (if removed)
If battery was removed, place it back in the battery tray ensuring it is properly seated. Install the hold-down bracket and torque the hold-down bolt to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft).

  11. 11
    Connect negative battery terminal
Clean the negative battery post with a wire brush if necessary. Apply thin coat of dielectric grease to post if desired. Place negative terminal onto battery post ensuring full contact. Tighten terminal bolt to 6 Nm (4 lb-ft) using torque wrench. Do not overtighten as this can damage the terminal or battery post.
Over-tightening battery terminals can crack the battery case or damage terminals.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all ground connections are tight and properly torqued
  2. Ensure negative battery cable is not in contact with any moving parts or heat sources
  3. Verify battery hold-down is secure
  4. Double-check that negative terminal is tight on battery post

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position (do not start) - verify dash lights illuminate normally
  • Start engine and verify it cranks and starts normally without hesitation
  • Check for any electrical warning lights on the instrument cluster
  • Test basic electrical functions: headlights, horn, power windows, radio
  • Reset clock and radio presets as needed
  • Cycle power windows fully down and up to relearn auto-up/down function if equipped
  • Verify no unusual odors or smoke from ground connection points
