This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the cooling fan assembly on a 2012-2017 Toyota Camry with the 2.5L I4 engine.
Warnings
⚠️Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work. Coolant system operates under pressure and can cause severe burns.
⚠Cooling fan may activate even with engine off if coolant temperature is high. Disconnect battery negative terminal before working near fan.
ℹ️Some coolant loss is normal during this procedure. Have extra coolant available for topping off.

Parts
- Cooling fan assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Radiator upper hose (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Fluids
- Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (Pink) — 1 qt
Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
- Position vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes
- Place drain pan under radiator if partial coolant drain is desired
Procedure
- 1Remove upper engine coverPull upward on the decorative engine cover to release the rubber grommets. Set cover aside.
- 2Disconnect cooling fan electrical connectorLocate the cooling fan motor electrical connector on the passenger side of the fan shroud. Press the locking tab and pull connector straight off. If connector is tight, gently wiggle while pulling.
- 3Remove upper radiator hose from fan shroud clipThe upper radiator hose is retained by a clip on the fan shroud. Use a flat blade screwdriver to release the clip and free the hose from the shroud. Do not disconnect the hose from the radiator.
- 4Remove fan shroud upper mounting boltsRemove the two upper 10mm bolts securing the fan shroud to the radiator support. These bolts are located at the top corners of the fan assembly. Keep bolts organized for reinstallation.Torque specMounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
- 5Remove fan shroud lower mounting bracketsRemove the two lower 10mm bolts that secure the fan shroud to the lower radiator mounting tabs. The lower bolts may be accessed from above by reaching down alongside the radiator. Use an extension if needed.Torque specMounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
- 6Lift fan assembly from engine bayCarefully lift the cooling fan assembly straight up and out of the engine bay. Tilt the top of the assembly slightly toward the engine as you lift to clear the radiator. Be careful not to damage radiator fins or coolant hoses during removal.
- 7Inspect radiator and mounting pointsWith the fan removed, inspect the radiator fins for damage, check the upper and lower radiator hoses for cracks or soft spots, and verify the fan mounting tabs on the radiator are not damaged. Clean any debris from the radiator surface.
- 8Install new cooling fan assemblyGuide the new cooling fan assembly into position by tilting the top toward the engine and lowering it into place. Ensure the lower mounting tabs engage properly with the radiator brackets before releasing the assembly. Verify the fan shroud sits flush against the radiator.
- 9Install lower mounting boltsInstall the two lower 10mm mounting bolts finger-tight first to hold the assembly in position. Then torque to specification using a criss-cross pattern.Torque specMounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
- 10Install upper mounting boltsInstall the two upper 10mm mounting bolts and torque to specification. Verify the fan shroud is properly seated against the radiator before final tightening.Torque specMounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect upper radiator hose clipSecure the upper radiator hose back into the clip on the fan shroud. Ensure the hose is properly seated and the clip is fully engaged.
- 12Reconnect electrical connectorConnect the cooling fan motor electrical connector. Push firmly until you hear or feel the locking tab click into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is secure.
- 13Reinstall engine cover and reconnect batteryAlign the engine cover grommets with the mounting posts and press down firmly until seated. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify no tools or parts were left in the engine bay
- Check that cooling fan blades rotate freely by hand with no obstruction
Verification
- Top off coolant reservoir to FULL mark if level dropped during procedure
- Start engine and allow to reach operating temperature while monitoring coolant temperature gauge
- Verify cooling fan activates when engine reaches normal operating temperature (typically 195-205°F)
- Listen for abnormal noises from the fan assembly during operation
- Check for coolant leaks around radiator hoses and connections
- Verify air conditioning cooling fan operation by turning on A/C to MAX - fan should activate immediately
