This procedure covers the removal and installation of the exhaust tip on a 2012-2017 Toyota Camry with the 2.5L I4 engine.

Warnings

⚠️Allow exhaust system to cool completely before starting work. Exhaust components can remain hot for over an hour after engine shutdown and cause severe burns.
Ensure vehicle is securely supported on jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
ℹ️Exhaust fasteners may be corroded. Apply penetrating oil 15-30 minutes before removal if necessary.

Parts

  • Exhaust tip × 1 — Use OEM specification or aftermarket equivalent
  • Exhaust clamp or flange gasket (if applicable) × 1 — Verify attachment method

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine and exhaust system are completely cold to the touch
  2. Park vehicle on level, solid ground and engage parking brake
  3. Place wheel chocks in front of front wheels
  4. Raise rear of vehicle using floor jack at designated rear jacking point
  5. Support vehicle securely on jack stands under rear subframe or axle beam
  6. Inspect exhaust tip attachment method (clamp-on or bolt-on flange connection)

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access exhaust tip
Position yourself under the rear of the vehicle with adequate lighting. Locate the exhaust tip at the rear outlet of the exhaust system. Identify the attachment method: most aftermarket tips use a clamp-on system, while OEM tips may be welded or use a slip-fit connection.
  2. 2
    Remove heat shield (if equipped)
If a heat shield covers the exhaust tip mounting area, remove the retaining bolts using a 10mm socket. Set heat shield and bolts aside for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Heat Shield Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Loosen clamp or flange bolts
For clamp-on tips: Locate the band clamp securing the tip to the exhaust pipe. Loosen the clamp bolt(s) using a 14mm socket, but do not fully remove yet. For flanged connections: Remove the flange bolts completely. Apply penetrating oil if fasteners are corroded.
  4. 4
    Remove exhaust tip
For clamp-on tips: Once clamp is loose, twist and pull the exhaust tip rearward to slide it off the exhaust pipe. For flanged tips: Separate the tip from the flange connection and remove. Inspect the exhaust pipe outlet for damage, rust, or excessive carbon buildup.
  5. 5
    Clean mounting surface
Use a wire brush to clean the outer surface of the exhaust pipe outlet where the new tip will attach. Remove all carbon deposits, rust, and debris to ensure proper seating and seal. Wipe clean with a rag.
  6. 6
    Install new exhaust tip
For clamp-on tips: Slide the new exhaust tip over the exhaust pipe outlet, ensuring it seats fully and is oriented correctly (opening facing downward at the proper angle). Position the clamp over the connection point. For flanged tips: Apply anti-seize compound to bolt threads, align the new tip with the flange, and install bolts finger-tight.
    Torque spec
    Exhaust Flange Bolts45 Nm (33 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Tighten and align
For clamp-on tips: Tighten the clamp bolt(s) securely with a 14mm socket, ensuring the tip does not rotate or move. Adjust tip alignment before final tightening so it appears centered and level from the rear of the vehicle. For flanged connections: Torque flange bolts to specification in a cross-pattern.

  8. 8
    Reinstall heat shield
If a heat shield was removed, position it back in place and install retaining bolts. Torque heat shield bolts to specification.
    Torque spec
    Heat Shield Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Lower vehicle
Carefully raise vehicle slightly with floor jack, remove jack stands, and lower vehicle completely to the ground. Remove wheel chocks.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all clamps or flange bolts are properly tightened to prevent exhaust leaks or tip detachment
  2. Verify exhaust tip is properly aligned and centered when viewed from behind the vehicle
  3. Double-check that heat shield (if equipped) is securely fastened and not contacting the exhaust tip

Verification

  • Visually inspect exhaust tip from behind vehicle to confirm proper alignment and appearance
  • Start engine and listen for exhaust leaks at the tip connection point
  • Allow engine to reach operating temperature and verify no unusual sounds or vibrations from exhaust system
  • Check that exhaust tip remains secure and does not rattle or move when engine is running
  • Visually confirm no exhaust gases are escaping from connection points
