This procedure covers removal and replacement of the interior fuse box assembly on 2012-2017 Toyota Camry vehicles with the 2.5L I4 engine, including disconnection of electrical connectors and proper reinstallation.

Warnings

⚠️Always disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait at least 90 seconds before working on any electrical components to prevent airbag deployment and short circuits.
Label all electrical connectors before disconnection to ensure proper reconnection. Incorrect connections can cause electrical system damage.
Do not force electrical connectors or fuse box mounting tabs as they are fragile and expensive to replace.
ℹ️The interior fuse box is located on the driver's side lower dash panel, left of the steering column.

Parts

  • Interior fuse box assembly (if replacing) × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Fuse box cover clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
  3. Ensure all electrical accessories are turned off
  4. Open driver's door for access to interior fuse box area
  5. Gather all necessary tools and replacement parts
  6. Have a camera or phone ready to photograph connector positions before removal

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery negative terminal
Open the hood and locate the battery in the engine compartment. Using a battery terminal wrench or 10mm socket, loosen and remove the negative (-) battery terminal bolt. Lift the terminal away from the battery post and secure it away from the battery to prevent accidental reconnection. Wait at least 90 seconds for airbag system capacitors to discharge.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove lower dashboard cover
Locate the lower dashboard panel on the driver's side beneath the steering column. Identify and remove the Phillips screws securing the cover (typically 2-3 screws). Gently pull the lower cover away from the dash, releasing any retaining clips. Set the cover and screws aside in a safe location.
  3. 3
Access and remove fuse box cover
Locate the interior fuse box mounted to the left side of the lower dash area. Open the fuse box cover by pulling the release tab or pressing the clips as designed. Remove the cover completely to expose the fuses and relays. Keep the fuse diagram for reference during reassembly.
  4. 4
Document and remove fuses and relays
Take a clear photograph of all fuse and relay positions in the fuse box. Using the fuse puller tool (located in the fuse box) or needle-nose pliers, carefully remove all fuses and relays from the interior fuse box. Place them in a labeled container or organize them according to their positions to ensure correct reinstallation.
  5. 5
    Disconnect electrical connectors
Locate all electrical connectors attached to the back of the interior fuse box assembly (typically 3-5 large multi-pin connectors). Photograph each connector and its position. Press the release tabs on each connector while gently pulling straight back to disconnect. Do not twist or force connectors. Mark each connector with tape if necessary for identification.
Some connectors have secondary locking tabs that must be released before the main connector can be removed. Check for red or gray secondary locks.
  6. 6
    Remove ground strap connection
Locate the ground strap bolt connected to the fuse box mounting bracket or body ground point near the fuse box. Use a 10mm socket to remove the ground strap bolt. Clean the ground connection point with a wire brush to remove any corrosion or oxidation for proper electrical contact during reassembly. Set the ground strap and bolt aside.
ℹ️A clean, tight ground connection is critical for proper electrical system operation. Ensure contact surfaces are bright and free of paint or corrosion.
    Torque spec
    Ground Bolt14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Remove fuse box mounting bolts
Identify the mounting bolts securing the interior fuse box to the dash bracket (typically 3-4 bolts, 10mm heads). Using a 10mm socket and ratchet, remove all mounting bolts while supporting the fuse box assembly with your other hand. Keep track of any washers or spacers on the mounting bolts.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  8. 8
    Remove interior fuse box assembly
Carefully pull the fuse box assembly away from the mounting bracket. Check for any additional wire ties, clips, or connectors that may still be attached. Maneuver the fuse box out of the dash cavity, taking care not to damage surrounding trim or wiring harnesses. If replacing the fuse box, transfer any necessary components or labels to the new unit.
  9. 9
Install new or serviced fuse box
Position the fuse box assembly into the mounting location, ensuring all connectors are accessible and no wires are pinched. Align the mounting holes with the bracket. Install the mounting bolts finger-tight initially to allow for final positioning adjustment. Once properly aligned, torque the mounting bolts to specification using a torque wrench.

    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reconnect ground strap
Position the ground strap to its mounting point, ensuring the contact surface on both the strap terminal and mounting point are clean and bright. Install the ground bolt and torque to specification. Verify the connection is secure and the strap has no excessive movement.
    Torque spec
    Ground Bolt14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reconnect all electrical connectors
Referring to your photographs, reconnect each electrical connector to the back of the fuse box assembly. Push each connector straight in until you hear or feel a positive click. Verify each connector is fully seated by gently pulling back on it. Engage any secondary locking tabs if present.
  12. 12
    Reinstall fuses and relays
Using your photographs and the fuse diagram, reinstall all fuses and relays to their correct positions in the fuse box. Ensure each fuse and relay is fully seated in its socket. Double-check that the correct amperage fuses are in the proper locations.
  13. 13
Reinstall fuse box cover and lower dash panel
Replace the fuse box cover, ensuring all clips engage properly. Reposition the lower dashboard cover and secure it with the Phillips screws, torquing to specification if applicable. Verify all clips are properly engaged and the cover fits flush.
  14. 14
    Reconnect battery and initialize systems
Return to the engine compartment and reconnect the negative battery terminal to the battery post. Torque the battery terminal bolt to specification. Do not overtighten. Turn the ignition to ON (engine off) and verify all dashboard warning lights illuminate and then extinguish normally (except for those expected to remain on).
After battery reconnection, power windows and other systems may require reinitialization. Consult owner's manual for specific initialization procedures.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated with positive engagement
  2. Verify all fuses and relays are in correct positions per fuse diagram
  3. Confirm ground connections are clean and torqued to specification
  4. Check that no wires are pinched or under tension from fuse box installation
  5. Verify lower dash panel is secure with no rattles or gaps

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position and verify all electrical systems function properly (interior lights, power windows, radio, HVAC controls, instrument cluster)
  • Start the engine and confirm no warning lights remain illuminated abnormally
  • Test all fuse box circuits including power outlets, accessory power, and interior lighting
  • Verify turn signals, hazard lights, and brake lights function correctly
  • Check that all dashboard warning lights operate normally during bulb check
  • Confirm power window auto-up/down features work if equipped (may require reinitialization)
  • Test all door locks and interior electrical accessories
  • Scan for diagnostic trouble codes with OBD-II scanner to ensure no electrical faults are present
