Replace the neutral safety switch (park/neutral position switch) on the transaxle to restore proper starting functionality and reverse light operation.

Warnings

⚠️Vehicle must be securely supported on jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
Transmission fluid will drain when switch is removed. Have drain pan positioned before loosening switch.
Engine and transmission may be hot if recently operated. Allow to cool before beginning work.
ℹ️This procedure requires raising the vehicle and working underneath. Ensure adequate clearance and lighting.

Parts

  • Neutral safety switch (park/neutral position switch) × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • O-ring seal for switch × 1 — Use OEM specification

Fluids

  • Toyota WS ATF — 1.5 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake firmly
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands at manufacturer-specified lift points
  4. Remove driver side front wheel for improved access (optional but recommended)
  5. Allow engine and transmission to cool to ambient temperature

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access the neutral safety switch
Locate the neutral safety switch on the driver side of the transaxle, near the shifter cable connection. It is mounted to the transaxle case with two bolts and has an electrical connector with a locking tab. You may need to remove the plastic splash shield or access panel if equipped for better visibility.
  2. 2
    Disconnect electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the neutral safety switch electrical connector and carefully pull the connector straight off the switch. Do not pull on the wires themselves. Move the connector aside to prevent contamination from transmission fluid.
  3. 3
    Position drain pan
Place a drain pan with at least 2 quart capacity directly beneath the neutral safety switch. Approximately 1 to 1.5 quarts of ATF will drain when the switch is removed. Have shop rags ready to control spillage.
  4. 4
    Remove switch mounting bolts
Using a 10mm socket, remove the two bolts securing the neutral safety switch to the transaxle case. Keep these bolts as they will be reused. Note the orientation of the switch before removal.

  5. 5
    Remove old switch
Carefully pull the neutral safety switch straight out from the transaxle case. Allow transmission fluid to drain into the pan. Remove and discard the old O-ring seal from the switch bore in the transaxle case. Clean the sealing surface on the transaxle with a shop rag.
  6. 6
    Prepare new switch
Install the new O-ring seal onto the new neutral safety switch. Lightly coat the O-ring with clean ATF to ease installation and prevent damage. Verify the manual shaft position pin on the switch matches the original orientation.
  7. 7
    Install new switch
Align the manual shaft engagement portion of the switch with the manual valve shaft inside the transaxle. The switch will only install in one orientation. Push the switch firmly into the transaxle case until it seats flush against the mounting surface.
  8. 8
    Install and torque mounting bolts
Thread both mounting bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Using a torque wrench and 10mm socket, tighten the bolts in a cross pattern to the specified torque of 15 Nm (11 lb-ft). Do not overtighten as this can damage the switch body or transaxle case.

  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connector
Push the electrical connector onto the new neutral safety switch until the locking tab clicks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
  10. 10
    Add transmission fluid
Remove the transaxle dipstick (located near the firewall on passenger side). Using a funnel, add Toyota WS ATF to replace the fluid that drained during switch removal. Add approximately 1.5 quarts initially. Do not overfill.
  11. 11
    Check fluid level
With the engine running and at normal operating temperature, shift through all gear positions, pausing 2 seconds in each position. Return to Park. Check the fluid level on the dipstick with the engine running. The level should be in the HOT range. Add fluid as needed to bring to proper level.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall driver side front wheel if removed and torque lug nuts to specification
  2. Lower vehicle from jack stands
  3. Remove wheel chocks
  4. Dispose of used transmission fluid according to local environmental regulations

Verification

  • Verify engine starts only in Park and Neutral positions, not in Drive or Reverse
  • Verify reverse lights illuminate when shifter is in Reverse position
  • Check for transmission fluid leaks around the neutral safety switch after test drive
  • Confirm smooth shifting through all gear positions with no warning lights on dash
  • Recheck transmission fluid level after vehicle reaches normal operating temperature
