Fluids

  • Toyota ATF Dexron III — 1.5 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Start with cold engine for safety
  3. Raise front of vehicle and secure on jack stands to allow full steering wheel rotation
  4. Locate power steering fluid reservoir in engine bay on passenger side
  5. Place drain pan under vehicle to catch any drips

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove old fluid from reservoir
Use turkey baster or fluid transfer pump to extract as much old power steering fluid as possible from the reservoir. Remove fluid down to the minimum line. Dispose of old fluid properly.
  2. 2
    Refill with fresh fluid
Using a funnel, fill the reservoir with fresh Toyota ATF Dexron III to the MAX cold line. Do not overfill.
  3. 3
Turn steering wheel lock to lock
With engine OFF, slowly turn the steering wheel fully left, then fully right. Repeat 10-15 times. This circulates the new fluid through the system. Check fluid level after every few cycles and top off as needed.
  4. 4
    Extract darkened fluid again
Use turkey baster to remove fluid from reservoir again. The fluid will be darker as old fluid mixes with new. Extract down to minimum line.
  5. 5
    Refill and repeat cycling process
Refill reservoir to MAX cold line with fresh Toyota ATF Dexron III. Turn steering wheel lock to lock another 10-15 times with engine off. Repeat extraction and refill process until fluid removed appears clean and red.
  6. 6
    Start engine and check system
Start engine and let idle. Turn steering wheel slowly from lock to lock 3-4 times. Check for leaks around reservoir and hoses. Listen for any unusual pump noise indicating air in system.
If pump whines or groans, stop engine immediately. Air may be in system requiring additional bleeding.
  7. 7
    Final fluid level adjustment
With engine at idle and warm, check fluid level. It should be between MIN and MAX hot lines. Add fluid if necessary to reach proper level. Do not overfill.
  8. 8
    Lower vehicle and test drive
Lower vehicle from jack stands. Test drive and verify smooth steering operation with no noise. Recheck fluid level after test drive and top off if needed.
    Torque spec
    Wheel Lug Nuts136 Nm (100 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure reservoir cap is securely tightened
  2. Wipe down reservoir and surrounding area to remove any spilled fluid
  3. Check for any leaks around power steering hoses and connections

Verification

  • Fluid level is at proper HOT mark with engine running and warm
  • Fluid color is bright red, not dark or brown
  • No whining, groaning, or unusual noises from power steering pump
  • Steering operates smoothly throughout full range of motion
  • No visible leaks around reservoir, hoses, or rack connections
