This procedure replaces the trunk latch actuator assembly on a 2012-2017 Toyota Camry with 2.5L I4 engine, restoring power trunk release functionality.

Warnings

Disconnect battery negative terminal before beginning work to prevent electrical shorts or accidental airbag deployment when working near wiring.
The trunk latch mechanism contains spring-loaded components that can pinch fingers. Work carefully when handling the actuator assembly.
ℹ️If power trunk release fails after replacement, the Body Control Module may require initialization using a Toyota diagnostic scan tool.

Parts

  • Trunk latch actuator assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Trunk trim panel clips (if damaged) × 5 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Open trunk fully and prop open if needed
  3. Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 3 minutes for electrical system to discharge
  4. Gather all tools and new actuator assembly
  5. Inspect new actuator to verify correct part before beginning disassembly

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove trunk liner panel
Using panel removal tools, carefully pry out the trunk liner panel surrounding the latch area. Start at the bottom edge and work upward. There are approximately 5-7 plastic push clips securing the panel. Pull the panel away to access the latch mechanism behind it. Set panel and clips aside in a safe location.
  2. 2
    Disconnect actuator electrical connector
Locate the electrical connector attached to the trunk latch actuator. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off the actuator. Inspect connector pins for corrosion or damage. Clean with electrical contact cleaner if necessary.
  3. 3
Disconnect trunk release cable (if equipped)
If your Camry has an emergency trunk release cable, disconnect it from the actuator mechanism. The cable typically has a plastic clip or retainer that must be compressed to release. Slide the cable end out of the actuator lever slot.
Do not pull on the cable housing itself, only on the cable end fitting to avoid damaging the cable.
  4. 4
    Remove actuator mounting bolts
Using a 10mm socket, remove the three bolts securing the trunk latch actuator assembly to the trunk lid structure. Support the actuator with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Remove old actuator assembly
Carefully pull the actuator assembly away from the trunk lid. You may need to manipulate the latch mechanism to clear the striker pin opening. Note the orientation and position of the actuator for proper installation of the new unit.
  6. 6
    Prepare new actuator
Remove new actuator from packaging and verify it matches the old unit exactly. Check that the latch mechanism operates smoothly by hand. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the electrical connector receptacle on the new actuator to prevent corrosion.
  7. 7
    Install new actuator assembly
Position the new actuator into the trunk lid opening, aligning the mounting holes with the threaded inserts in the trunk structure. Ensure the latch mechanism is properly oriented to engage with the striker pin. Hand-thread all three mounting bolts before tightening any of them.
  8. 8
    Torque actuator mounting bolts
Using a torque wrench, tighten the three actuator mounting bolts to specification in a cross pattern to ensure even seating. Start with the top bolt, then alternate between lower bolts.

    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Reconnect trunk release cable
If equipped with emergency trunk release cable, insert the cable end into the actuator lever slot and secure the retaining clip. Verify the cable moves freely and the lever returns to rest position.
  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connector
Plug the electrical connector onto the new actuator firmly until you hear or feel the locking tab click into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
  11. 11
    Reinstall trunk liner panel
Position the trunk liner panel back into place. Press firmly on each clip location to seat the push clips into their mounting holes. Verify all edges of the panel are flush and properly secured.
  12. 12
    Reconnect battery
Reconnect the battery negative terminal. Clean terminal and post if corrosion is present. Tighten terminal bolt to specification using a torque wrench.
Do not overtighten battery terminal bolts as this can damage the battery post or terminal clamp.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connections are secure and properly locked
  2. Verify trunk liner panel is completely seated with no gaps
  3. Check that no tools or parts were left in the trunk latch area

Verification

  • Close the trunk gently and verify it latches securely
  • Test power trunk release from inside the vehicle using the dashboard button
  • Test power trunk release using the key fob if equipped
  • Test emergency trunk release cable from inside the trunk if equipped
  • Open and close the trunk several times to ensure consistent operation
  • Verify trunk warning light functions properly on the instrument cluster when trunk is open
  • If power release does not function, check fuses and verify electrical connector is fully seated before seeking diagnostic assistance
