Parts
- Front wiper motor assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Cowl panel clips (replacement set) × 1 — Generic trim clip assortment
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Mark wiper blade rest positions on windshield with masking tape for reference
- Ensure wipers are in park position
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds
- Gather all tools and replacement parts
Procedure
- 1Remove wiper armsLift the wiper arm cap at the base of each wiper arm. Use a 14mm socket to remove the wiper arm retaining nuts. Mark the position of each arm on the pivot shaft with a marker. Gently rock the wiper arms while pulling away from the windshield to release them from the tapered pivot shafts. Remove both driver and passenger side wiper arms completely.
- 2Remove cowl panel clips and sealsOpen the hood. Locate the rubber hood seal along the rear edge of the hood opening where it meets the cowl. Carefully peel back the rubber seal from the cowl area. Using a panel removal tool, carefully pry up the plastic clips securing the cowl panel. There are approximately 8-10 clips along the cowl. Work from one side to the other, releasing each clip without breaking them. Set clips aside for reuse or replacement.
- 3Remove cowl panel coverOnce all clips are released, lift the passenger side of the cowl panel first, then work toward the driver side. The panel may have alignment tabs that require slight manipulation. Carefully lift the entire cowl panel assembly away from the vehicle. Disconnect any washer hoses attached to the panel if equipped. Set the cowl panel aside in a safe location where it will not be damaged.
- 4Disconnect wiper motor electrical connectorLocate the wiper motor electrical connector on the motor assembly. Press the locking tab on the connector and pull straight away from the motor to disconnect. Do not pull on the wires themselves. Secure the connector away from the work area to prevent damage.
- 5Disconnect wiper linkage armLocate the connection point where the wiper linkage arm connects to the wiper motor crank arm. Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry the linkage ball socket off the motor crank arm ball stud. Apply steady pressure while supporting the linkage to prevent damage to surrounding components. The socket should pop off with moderate force.
- 6Remove wiper motor mounting boltsUsing a 10mm socket, remove the three mounting bolts securing the wiper motor to the vehicle frame. Support the motor with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling. Note the position of any ground straps or brackets attached to the mounting bolts for proper reinstallation.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 7Remove wiper motor assemblyCarefully maneuver the wiper motor assembly out of the cowl area. The motor may need to be tilted or rotated slightly to clear surrounding components. Once free, inspect the motor mounting area for debris, corrosion, or damage. Clean the mounting surface if necessary.
- 8Install new wiper motorPosition the new wiper motor assembly into the mounting location, ensuring any ground straps or brackets are properly aligned with the mounting bolt holes. Thread in the three mounting bolts by hand first to ensure proper alignment. Torque the mounting bolts to specification in a crossing pattern to ensure even seating.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect wiper linkage and electricalSnap the wiper linkage ball socket firmly onto the motor crank arm ball stud. Ensure it is fully seated and secure. Reconnect the electrical connector to the wiper motor, pressing firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. Tug gently on the connector to verify it is locked.
- 10Reinstall cowl panelReconnect any washer hoses to the cowl panel if applicable. Position the cowl panel back onto the vehicle, starting with the driver side and working toward the passenger side. Ensure all alignment tabs are properly seated. Press down firmly on each clip location until the clips snap into place. Reinstall the rubber hood seal along the cowl edge.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 11Reinstall wiper armsAlign each wiper arm with the reference marks made during removal. Press the wiper arms firmly onto the tapered pivot shafts, ensuring they are fully seated. Install the 14mm retaining nuts and tighten securely. Close the wiper arm caps. Verify both wiper arms are in the correct park position.
- 12Reconnect battery and testReconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine. Test all wiper functions: low speed, high speed, intermittent settings, and washer operation. Verify wipers return to proper park position after each test. Check for smooth operation without binding or unusual noise.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Torque all fasteners to specification using values from the torque reference list
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify cowl panel clips are fully engaged before testing
- Check that wiper arms are properly indexed to park in the correct position
Verification
- Test all wiper speeds and intermittent functions with engine running
- Verify wipers park in the correct position at the bottom of the windshield
- Check for smooth, quiet operation without chattering or binding
- Spray washer fluid and confirm wipers activate properly
- Inspect cowl area for proper sealing and no rattles
- Verify no warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster
