Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
  2. Park vehicle on level ground, engage parking brake, and place transmission in Park

  4. Locate the brake booster on the driver's side firewall behind the master cylinder

The valve is retained only by the rubber grommet and should release with moderate force. If extremely difficult, gently twist while pulling.     Examine the round opening in the brake booster face. The rubber grommet may have come out with the old check valve, or it may still be in the booster.     Be extremely careful not to drop anything into the brake booster opening. Foreign objects inside the booster will require complete booster replacement.

Air should flow freely in one direction (from booster toward engine) and be blocked in the other direction (from engine toward booster). Identify the tapered end that inserts into the booster and the larger end that connects to the vacuum hose. Confirm the new grommet is properly seated on the check valve body.

    If your replacement check valve came with a separate grommet, install the grommet into the brake booster bore first. Press it firmly into place until it sits flush with the booster face. Apply a thin film of clean brake fluid to the grommet inner diameter to ease check valve installation.

    Align the tapered end of the check valve with the grommet in the booster bore. Ensure the check valve is oriented with the flow arrow (if marked) pointing toward the booster, allowing air to flow FROM the engine TO the booster only. Push the check valve straight into the grommet with firm, steady pressure until it seats completely. The valve should be fully inserted with no gap between the valve body and booster face.

Verification

  • Turn engine off and wait 10 seconds. Press brake pedal slowly - you should feel 2-3 assisted applications before pedal becomes hard. This confirms check valve is holding vacuum in the booster
  • Restart engine while holding light pressure on brake pedal. Pedal should drop slightly as vacuum assist resumes. This confirms proper check valve function
