This procedure adds the correct amount of PAG oil to the AC compressor to maintain proper lubrication and system performance.

Warnings

⚠️Refrigerant must be fully recovered by certified equipment before opening any AC system connections. Releasing refrigerant is illegal and environmentally harmful.
⚠️AC refrigerant can cause severe frostbite and eye injury. Wear safety glasses and gloves at all times.
Only use ND-11 PAG oil or manufacturer-approved equivalent. Incorrect oil type will damage the compressor.
PAG oil absorbs moisture rapidly. Keep oil container sealed until immediately before use.
ℹ️This procedure assumes the compressor has not been replaced. If replacing compressor, drain and measure old oil, then add same amount to new compressor.

Parts

  • AC system O-rings × 2 — Use OEM specification
  • Shop towels × 1 — N/A

Fluids

  • ND-11 PAG oil (or equivalent manufacturer-specified PAG oil) — 0.25 qt

Preparation

  1. Verify AC system has been properly recovered using certified AC recovery machine
  2. Ensure engine is completely cool before beginning work
  3. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  4. Measure and record the amount of PAG oil to be added (typically 1-2 oz for oil top-up)
  5. Verify you have correct ND-11 PAG oil specification for this system

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access the AC compressor
Open hood and locate the AC compressor on the driver's side of the engine bay, mounted low on the engine block. The compressor is driven by the serpentine belt and has refrigerant lines connected to it.
  2. 2
    Verify system is fully recovered
Confirm AC system pressure is at 0 PSI using manifold gauges. The system must be completely evacuated before opening any fittings. If not already recovered, use certified AC recovery equipment to remove all refrigerant.
  3. 3
    Disconnect the suction line
Locate the larger diameter suction line (low-pressure side) fitting on the compressor. Use appropriate wrench to loosen and disconnect the suction line fitting from the compressor. Remove and discard the old O-ring. Have shop towels ready to catch any residual oil.

    AC Line Fittings20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Drain and measure existing oil
Slowly rotate the compressor clutch by hand several times while holding the compressor with suction port facing down over a graduated measuring cup. Allow all oil to drain from the suction port. Record the amount of oil removed. This helps determine if system is low on oil.
  5. 5
    Calculate oil to add
If less than 1.5 oz drained, add oil to bring total system capacity to approximately 4-5 oz (check service manual for exact specification). For routine top-up without component replacement, add 1-2 oz. If adding oil due to leak repair, add amount lost plus 1 oz.
  6. 6
    Add PAG oil to compressor
Using the PAG oil injector tool or clean measuring device, pour the calculated amount of fresh ND-11 PAG oil directly into the suction port opening of the compressor. Rotate the compressor clutch 10-15 times by hand to distribute oil internally.
  7. 7
Install new O-rings and reconnect suction line
Install new O-ring onto the suction line fitting. Lightly coat the O-ring with fresh PAG oil. Reconnect the suction line to the compressor and hand-tighten, then torque to specification using torque wrench.
Do not over-torque AC fittings as aluminum threads strip easily. Use calibrated torque wrench.

  8. 8
    Evacuate the AC system
Connect AC recovery/evacuation machine to service ports. Run vacuum pump for minimum 30 minutes to remove all air and moisture from the system. System should hold vacuum at 29+ inHg for at least 10 minutes after pump stops.
  9. 9
    Recharge the AC system
Using AC recharge machine, add the correct amount of R-134a refrigerant per specifications (typically 18-20 oz for this system). Monitor gauges to ensure proper charging. Low side should be 25-35 PSI, high side 200-250 PSI at idle with AC on max.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all AC line connections are secure and properly torqued
  2. Inspect for any signs of oil leakage around fittings
  3. Ensure no tools or materials were left in engine bay

Verification

  • Start engine and turn AC to maximum cold with blower on high
  • Verify AC compressor clutch engages and compressor runs smoothly without noise
  • Check that cold air is produced at vents (vent temperature should be 38-45°F)
  • Monitor system pressures with gauges to confirm proper operation
  • Inspect all connection points for refrigerant or oil leaks using leak detector or soap solution
  • Test AC performance after 10-15 minutes of operation to ensure adequate cooling
