This procedure replaces both front sway bar links (stabilizer links) on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla to restore proper suspension performance and eliminate clunking noises.
Warnings
⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for the vehicle weight.
⚠Sway bar links are under tension when vehicle is on the ground. Loosen hardware only when suspension is unloaded with wheels off the ground.
ℹ️Sway bar link ball joints may spin freely when worn. Use Allen key to hold the shaft while loosening the nut.

Parts
- Front sway bar link (stabilizer link) × 2 — Use OEM specification or quality aftermarket
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Loosen front wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on the ground (do not remove)
- Lift front of vehicle and secure on jack stands at manufacturer-specified jacking points
- Remove both front wheels completely
- Spray penetrating oil on sway bar link nuts if corrosion is present and allow to soak
Procedure
- 1Access the sway bar linkLocate the sway bar link connecting the front strut assembly to the sway bar. The link is vertical with ball joints on both ends, one attached to the strut and one to the sway bar end.
- 2Remove upper sway bar link nutInsert a 6mm Allen key into the top of the sway bar link shaft to hold it stationary. Use a 14mm wrench to loosen and remove the upper nut that attaches the link to the strut assembly. If the ball joint spins, hold the shaft firmly with the Allen key while turning the nut.
- 3Remove lower sway bar link nutInsert the 6mm Allen key into the bottom of the sway bar link shaft. Use a 14mm wrench to loosen and remove the lower nut that attaches the link to the sway bar. Hold the shaft with the Allen key to prevent spinning.
- 4Remove old sway bar linkPull the sway bar link free from both mounting points. The ball joint studs should slide out of the mounting brackets. If stuck, gently tap the link with a rubber mallet or apply additional penetrating oil and wiggle free.
- 5Clean mounting surfacesUse a wire brush to clean the mounting holes on both the strut assembly and sway bar where the link connects. Remove any rust, debris, or corrosion to ensure proper seating of the new link.
- 6Install new sway bar linkPosition the new sway bar link between the strut assembly and sway bar. Insert the upper ball joint stud into the strut mounting hole and the lower ball joint stud into the sway bar mounting hole. Thread both nuts on by hand to hold the link in position.
- 7Torque sway bar link nutsInsert the 6mm Allen key into the shaft to prevent rotation. Torque both the upper and lower sway bar link nuts to specification. Ensure the ball joint boots are not twisted or damaged during tightening.Torque specSway Bar Link Nuts55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
- 8Repeat for opposite sideRepeat steps 1 through 7 for the sway bar link on the opposite side of the vehicle. Both links should be replaced as a pair even if only one side shows wear.
- 9Reinstall wheelsMount both front wheels and hand-tighten all lug nuts in a star pattern. Lower the vehicle until the wheels just contact the ground but suspension is not fully loaded.
- 10Final wheel torqueWith vehicle weight on the ground, torque all wheel lug nuts to 103 Nm (76 lb-ft) in a star pattern. Lower vehicle completely and remove jack stands.
Reassembly
- Ensure both sway bar link nuts are torqued to specification with the Allen key holding the shaft
- Verify that ball joint boots are intact and not twisted or torn
- Confirm wheel lug nuts are properly torqued in a star pattern
Verification
- Test drive vehicle at low speed and make turns in both directions to verify no clunking noises are present
- Bounce front end of vehicle by pushing down on the bumper to confirm links are functioning properly with no noise
- Visually inspect both links to ensure nuts are secure and no movement is present at the ball joints
- Check for proper sway bar function by noting reduced body roll during cornering compared to before repair
