This procedure covers removal and replacement of the throttle body on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla with the 1.8L I4 engine, including cleaning or replacing the unit to restore proper throttle response.
Warnings
⚠Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work to avoid burns from hot components
ℹ️Disconnecting the battery will reset learned throttle position values; the ECU will relearn during normal driving
⚠Do not use throttle body cleaner on the throttle plate or bore if electronic coating is present without verifying compatibility

Parts
- Throttle body gasket × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Throttle body assembly (if replacing) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Allow engine to cool completely for at least 30 minutes
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for airbag system to discharge
- Remove engine cover by pulling upward on four corner clips
Procedure
- 1Remove air intake assemblyLoosen the air intake hose clamp at the throttle body using a flat-blade screwdriver. Disconnect the mass airflow sensor electrical connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight out. Remove the air filter housing by unclipping the retaining clips and lifting the assembly away from the throttle body. Set aside the intake tube.
- 2Disconnect throttle body electrical connectorLocate the throttle position sensor connector on the side of the throttle body. Press down on the locking tab while pulling the connector away from the throttle body. Ensure the connector is clear of the work area.
- 3Disconnect coolant bypass hoses (if equipped)Some throttle bodies have small coolant bypass hoses for cold weather operation. If present, use pliers to slide the spring clamps away from the throttle body, then twist and pull the hoses off. Have a small drain pan ready to catch coolant (approximately 2-4 oz). Plug hoses with rubber caps or fold over and secure with zip ties.⚠Coolant may still be warm; allow additional cooling time if hoses are hot to the touch
- 4Remove throttle body mounting boltsRemove the four throttle body mounting bolts using a 10mm socket. Work in a cross pattern to evenly release tension. Keep bolts organized for reinstallation.
- 5Remove throttle body from intake manifoldCarefully pull the throttle body straight away from the intake manifold. The gasket may stick; gently wiggle the throttle body if resistance is felt. Once removed, cover the intake manifold opening with a clean shop towel to prevent debris from entering.
- 6Inspect and clean throttle body (if reusing)Remove the old gasket from both the throttle body and intake manifold mating surfaces using a plastic scraper; do not scratch the aluminum surfaces. If cleaning the throttle body, spray throttle body cleaner on a lint-free cloth and wipe the throttle bore and plate. Do not force the throttle plate open. Inspect for carbon buildup, damage, or worn throttle shaft bearings. Replace if excessive play is detected.
- 7Install new gasket and position throttle bodyInstall the new throttle body gasket onto the intake manifold studs or align it with the mounting holes. Position the throttle body (new or cleaned) onto the gasket, ensuring proper alignment with all four mounting holes. Verify the gasket has not shifted during installation.
- 8Install and torque throttle body boltsHand-thread all four throttle body mounting bolts to prevent cross-threading. Tighten in a cross pattern (top left, bottom right, top right, bottom left) to the specified torque using a torque wrench. This ensures even gasket compression and proper sealing.Torque specThrottle Body Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect coolant bypass hoses (if equipped)If coolant hoses were disconnected, reconnect them to the throttle body fittings. Slide the spring clamps back into position to secure. Verify hoses are fully seated on the fittings.
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorPlug the throttle position sensor electrical connector back onto the throttle body until it clicks into place. Tug gently to verify it is locked.
- 11Reinstall air intake assemblyPosition the air intake tube onto the throttle body inlet. Tighten the hose clamp at the throttle body to the specified torque. Reinstall the air filter housing and reconnect the mass airflow sensor electrical connector. Ensure all clips are secured.Torque specAir Intake Hose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 12Reinstall engine cover and reconnect batteryPress the engine cover back onto its mounting clips until all four corners are secured. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
Reassembly
- Check coolant level in the reservoir and top off with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (Pink) if coolant hoses were disconnected
- Double-check all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify all hose clamps are properly tightened and no tools remain in the engine bay
Verification
- Start the engine and allow it to idle; check for vacuum leaks around the throttle body (listen for hissing sounds)
- Verify idle is smooth after initial start; rough idle for the first 30 seconds is normal as the ECU relearns idle parameters
- Check for coolant leaks around bypass hose connections if they were disturbed
- Rev the engine gently to 2000-3000 RPM and verify smooth throttle response without hesitation
- Test drive the vehicle to confirm proper throttle operation; aggressive throttle response may occur initially as the ECU relearns, which will normalize after 10-20 minutes of driving
