Parts
- Charcoal canister (EVAP canister) × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Vapor hose clamps (if damaged) × 2 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on a level surface and apply parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind the front wheels
- Allow engine to cool completely if recently operated
- Raise the rear of the vehicle and support securely on jack stands
- Remove the driver's side rear wheel for better access (optional but recommended)
- Locate the charcoal canister mounted near the fuel tank on the driver's side
Procedure
- 1Access the charcoal canisterFrom under the vehicle, locate the charcoal canister assembly mounted to the frame rail near the fuel tank on the driver's side. Remove any splash shields or covers that may obstruct access using appropriate fasteners.
- 2Disconnect vapor hosesIdentify all vapor hoses connected to the canister (typically 2-3 connections). Using pliers, carefully squeeze and slide the hose clamps away from the canister connections. Mark or photograph hose positions for correct reinstallation. Gently twist and pull each hose off the canister ports.⚠Vapor hoses may be brittle. Do not force them or they may crack.
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector on the canister vent valve (located on top or side of canister). Press the release tab and disconnect the connector from the valve.
- 4Remove canister mounting boltsRemove the two mounting bolts securing the charcoal canister bracket to the frame rail using a 12mm socket. Support the canister while removing the second bolt to prevent it from falling.Torque specMounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 5Lower and remove canisterCarefully lower the charcoal canister assembly from its mounting location. Maneuver it out from under the vehicle, being careful not to damage any surrounding fuel lines or brake lines.
- 6Inspect mounting hardwareInspect the mounting bracket, vapor hoses, and hose clamps for damage, cracks, or deterioration. Replace any damaged components. Clean the mounting area on the frame rail of any debris or corrosion.
- 7Position new canisterPosition the new charcoal canister into the mounting bracket. Align the canister with the mounting holes on the frame rail. Support the assembly while preparing to install mounting bolts.
- 8Install mounting boltsThread both mounting bolts by hand to ensure proper alignment. Tighten the mounting bolts to specification using a torque wrench in a cross pattern.Torque specMounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect vapor hosesReconnect each vapor hose to its corresponding port on the canister, referencing your photos or markings from disassembly. Push each hose firmly onto the port until fully seated. Position the hose clamps approximately 10mm from the end of each connection and squeeze them into place.ℹ️Ensure hoses are fully seated on the ports before securing clamps to prevent vapor leaks.Torque specHose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorReconnect the electrical connector to the canister vent valve. Push firmly until you hear or feel a click, confirming the connector is fully seated and locked.
- 11Reinstall shields and wheelReinstall any splash shields or covers removed during access. If the rear wheel was removed, reinstall it and torque lug nuts to specification. Lower the vehicle from jack stands.
Reassembly
- Ensure all vapor hose connections are secure and hose clamps are properly positioned
- Verify the electrical connector to the vent valve is fully locked in place
- Double-check that mounting bolts are torqued to specification
Verification
- Start the engine and allow it to idle for several minutes while checking for fuel vapor odors around the canister area
- Use an OBD-II scanner to check for any EVAP system fault codes (P0440, P0441, P0446, P0455, P0456)
- Perform a visual inspection under the vehicle to confirm no vapor hoses are kinked or disconnected
- If equipped, verify the check engine light does not illuminate after driving the vehicle through a complete drive cycle
