This procedure covers locating, removing, and replacing the fuel pump relay in a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla with the 1.8L I4 engine.
Warnings
⚠️Working with fuel system components poses fire and explosion risk. Ensure adequate ventilation and have a fire extinguisher nearby.
⚠️A faulty fuel pump relay can cause the engine to stall unexpectedly while driving, creating a serious safety hazard. If you are uncertain about any step in this procedure, seek professional service immediately.
⚠Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require window auto-up/down relearning. Note radio security code if applicable before beginning work.
⚠Installing the wrong relay can damage the fuel pump or cause engine fire. Verify part number matches OEM specifications exactly.
ℹ️The fuel pump relay controls power to the fuel pump. A failed relay will prevent the engine from starting or cause stalling.

Parts
- Fuel pump relay × 1 — 90987-04004 or equivalent
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Allow engine to cool completely if recently driven
- Open driver's door to prevent accidental lockout
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for system discharge
- Locate the integration relay box under the driver's side dashboard, above the brake pedal area
Procedure
- 1Access the integration relay boxFrom the driver's seat, look up under the dashboard above the brake pedal. The integration relay box is a black plastic enclosure mounted to the underside of the dash. If there is a lower dash panel obstructing access, use a panel tool to carefully release the retaining clips and lower it for access. Some models have direct access without panel removal.
- 2Identify the fuel pump relay locationUse a flashlight to locate the relay diagram on the integration relay box cover or inside the cover. The fuel pump relay is typically labeled 'EFI MAIN' or 'FUEL PUMP' and is often a larger relay compared to others in the box. On 2014-2019 Corollas, it is usually positioned in the upper right section of the relay box when viewed from below. Verify against the diagram to ensure correct identification.
- 3Remove the fuel pump relayFirmly grasp the fuel pump relay and pull straight down with steady pressure. If the relay is difficult to remove by hand, use a relay puller tool or carefully use needle-nose pliers to grip the relay body (not the terminals). Rock the relay gently side to side while pulling to break it free from the socket. Do not use excessive force that could damage the socket terminals.
- 4Inspect the relay socket and terminalsExamine the relay socket for signs of corrosion, melting, discoloration, or burnt terminals. Check for pushed-back or bent pins inside the socket. Inspect the removed relay terminals for similar damage. Any evidence of heat damage or corrosion indicates a potential wiring issue that must be addressed before installing a new relay. If damage is present, professional diagnosis is strongly recommended.
- 5Install the new fuel pump relayVerify the new relay matches the part number and pin configuration of the original. Align the relay tabs with the socket slots, ensuring correct orientation (relays are keyed and will only fit one way). Press the relay firmly into the socket until it seats completely with an audible click. Verify the relay is fully seated and cannot be pulled out easily. If the socket has a retaining bolt, tighten it to specification.Torque specRelay Socket5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 6Reinstall lower dash panel if removedIf a lower dash panel was removed in step 1, align the panel with its mounting location and press firmly to engage all retaining clips. Ensure the panel is secure and flush with surrounding trim.
- 7Reconnect battery and initialize systemReconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten securely. Turn the ignition to ON position (do not start engine) for 5 seconds, then turn OFF. Repeat this cycle 3 times to allow the fuel system to prime and the ECU to recognize the new relay.Torque specGround Bolt13 Nm (10 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all dashboard panels are securely reinstalled with clips fully engaged
- Verify the fuel pump relay is fully seated and secured in the socket
- Confirm battery terminal is tight and shows no movement when tested by hand
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine - listen for the fuel pump priming (2-3 second whirring sound from rear of vehicle)
- Start the engine and verify it starts normally without extended cranking
- Allow engine to idle for 2 minutes and confirm stable operation with no stalling
- Turn engine off and restart to verify consistent starting behavior
- Check for any dashboard warning lights related to fuel system
- Test drive vehicle and verify normal acceleration and no hesitation under load
- After test drive, inspect the relay socket area for any signs of heat or burning odor
