This procedure covers the replacement of the serpentine belt idler pulley on the 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla with the 1.8L I4 engine, requiring removal of the accessory drive belt and idler pulley assembly.
Warnings
⚠Ensure engine is completely cool before beginning work to avoid contact with hot components
⚠The serpentine belt tensioner is spring-loaded and can cause injury if released suddenly
ℹ️Inspect the serpentine belt for cracks, glazing, or rib damage while removed; replace if necessary

Parts
- Serpentine belt idler pulley assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Serpentine drive belt (if worn or damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Allow engine to cool completely if recently operated
- Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent accidental starter engagement
- Remove any engine covers or plastic shields obstructing access to the front of the engine (if equipped)
Procedure
- 1Document belt routingLocate the belt routing diagram typically found on the underside of the hood or on the radiator support. If the diagram is missing or faded, photograph the serpentine belt routing around all pulleys before removal. This is critical for proper reinstallation.
- 2Release belt tensionLocate the automatic belt tensioner on the right side of the engine. Using a 14mm socket and breaker bar, rotate the tensioner clockwise to relieve tension on the serpentine belt. The tensioner pivot bolt is accessed from the front of the engine.
- 3Remove serpentine beltWhile maintaining tension relief on the tensioner, slip the serpentine belt off the nearest pulley (typically the alternator or crankshaft pulley). Slowly release the tensioner and completely remove the belt from all pulleys. Inspect the belt for wear, cracks, or glazing.
- 4Locate and access idler pulleyIdentify the idler pulley, which is located below the alternator on the right side of the engine block. It is a smooth pulley (no grooves) mounted to the engine with a single bolt. Ensure you have clear access to the mounting bolt.
- 5Remove idler pulley boltUsing a 14mm socket and ratchet, remove the idler pulley mounting bolt by turning counterclockwise. Support the pulley as you remove the bolt to prevent it from falling. Remove the pulley assembly from the engine block.
- 6Inspect mounting surfaceClean the idler pulley mounting surface on the engine block with a clean rag. Inspect the mounting boss for damage or cracks. Check that the mounting threads are clean and undamaged.
- 7Install new idler pulleyPosition the new idler pulley on the mounting boss, ensuring it sits flush against the engine block. Thread the idler pulley bolt by hand to avoid cross-threading. Verify the pulley rotates freely before tightening.Torque specIdler Pulley Bolt45 Nm (33 lb-ft)
- 8Torque idler pulley boltUsing a torque wrench, tighten the idler pulley mounting bolt to 45 Nm (33 lb-ft). Ensure the bolt is properly seated and the pulley does not wobble. Verify the pulley still spins freely after torquing.Torque specIdler Pulley Bolt45 Nm (33 lb-ft)
- 9Route serpentine beltFollowing the belt routing diagram or your photograph, route the new or existing serpentine belt around all pulleys EXCEPT the tensioner pulley. Ensure the belt ribs are properly seated in all grooved pulleys. The smooth side of the belt should contact smooth pulleys only.
- 10Install belt on tensionerUsing the 14mm socket and breaker bar, rotate the tensioner clockwise to relieve tension. Route the belt over the tensioner pulley, ensuring proper rib engagement. Slowly release the tensioner to apply proper tension to the belt. Verify the belt is correctly seated on all pulleys.
- 11Verify belt installationManually rotate the crankshaft pulley clockwise (using a socket on the crankshaft bolt) for at least two complete revolutions. Watch to ensure the belt tracks properly on all pulleys without slipping off or riding to one side. The belt should remain centered on all pulleys.
Reassembly
- Reinstall any engine covers or plastic shields that were removed
- Reconnect the negative battery cable
- Clear any diagnostic trouble codes that may have been set from battery disconnection
Verification
- Start the engine and listen for unusual noises such as squealing, chirping, or grinding from the accessory drive area
- Visually inspect the serpentine belt while engine is running to confirm it tracks properly on all pulleys without vibration or misalignment
- Verify all accessories (alternator, A/C compressor, power steering) operate normally
- Check that the new idler pulley rotates smoothly without noise or wobble
