This procedure covers removal and replacement of the steering angle sensor located in the steering column assembly of 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla vehicles.
Warnings
⚠️Battery must be disconnected for at least 90 seconds before working on steering column to prevent airbag deployment
⚠Do not rotate steering wheel or column shaft with sensor disconnected or rack disconnected, as this will require steering angle sensor recalibration
⚠Steering angle sensor must be calibrated using diagnostic scan tool after replacement or vehicle stability control systems will malfunction
ℹ️Wheels must be in straight-ahead position before disconnecting sensor

Parts
- Steering angle sensor × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Steering column cover clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface with wheels pointed straight ahead
- Turn ignition off and remove key
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 90 seconds for airbag system capacitor discharge
- Mark steering wheel position at 12 o'clock with tape or marker for reference
- Adjust steering column to lowest and most forward position for access
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column coversRemove the lower instrument panel under-cover if equipped. Locate and remove the screws securing the upper and lower steering column covers (typically 2-3 screws). Carefully separate the lower cover from upper cover by releasing retaining clips. Remove lower cover first, then upper cover.Torque specCover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 2Access steering angle sensorWith column covers removed, locate the steering angle sensor mounted on the steering column just below the combination switch assembly. The sensor is a circular module with an electrical connector. Note the routing of the wiring harness for reinstallation.ℹ️The sensor may be integrated with the spiral cable assembly on some models
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the steering angle sensor electrical connector and carefully disconnect it. Do not pull on wires. If connector is difficult to access, you may need to remove the combination switch assembly for better access.⚠Connector tabs are fragile and can break if excessive force is used
- 4Remove sensor mounting hardwareLocate the mounting bolts or screws securing the steering angle sensor to the steering column (typically 2-3 bolts). Remove these fasteners using appropriate socket. Support the sensor as you remove the final fastener.Torque specMounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 5Remove steering angle sensorCarefully slide the steering angle sensor off the steering shaft. Note the orientation and any alignment marks or tabs. The sensor typically slides straight off without rotation. Inspect the mounting surface on the column for damage or debris.⚠Do not rotate or move steering shaft during sensor removal
- 6Install new steering angle sensorAlign the new steering angle sensor with the steering shaft, ensuring any alignment tabs or notches are properly positioned. Slide the sensor onto the shaft until it seats fully against the column. Verify the sensor is oriented correctly with the electrical connector accessible.⚠Sensor must be fully seated and properly aligned or it will not function correctly
- 7Install mounting hardwareInstall the mounting bolts or screws finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Tighten mounting bolts to specification in a cross-pattern if multiple bolts are present. Verify sensor is secure and does not move.Torque specMounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 8Reconnect electrical connectorRoute the wiring harness as noted during removal. Connect the electrical connector to the steering angle sensor, ensuring it clicks into place and the locking tab engages fully. Gently tug on connector to verify it is secure.ℹ️Ensure wiring is not pinched or in contact with moving components
- 9Reinstall steering column coversPosition the upper steering column cover and snap into place. Install the lower cover, ensuring all alignment tabs engage properly. Install and tighten the cover screws to specification. Reinstall lower instrument panel under-cover if removed.Torque specCover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect battery and calibrate sensorReconnect negative battery terminal. Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine. Connect OBD-II scan tool and navigate to steering angle sensor calibration function. Follow scan tool prompts to initialize and calibrate the new sensor. This typically requires confirming wheels are straight and may require a short test drive.⚠️Vehicle is unsafe to drive until steering angle sensor is properly calibrated⚠VSC, traction control, and ABS warning lights will illuminate until calibration is complete
Reassembly
- Ensure all steering column covers are properly secured with no gaps or loose clips
- Verify all electrical connections are secure and wiring is properly routed away from moving parts
- Confirm steering wheel returns to center position smoothly without binding
Verification
- Start engine and verify no warning lights related to steering, VSC, or ABS remain illuminated after calibration
- Turn steering wheel lock-to-lock slowly and verify smooth operation with no unusual noises
- Use scan tool to verify steering angle sensor is reading correctly (should show 0 degrees with wheels straight)
- Test drive vehicle at low speed in safe area to confirm stability control and ABS systems function normally
- Verify steering wheel is centered when driving straight and vehicle tracks properly
