A minor tune-up for the 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla 1.8L I4 includes replacing spark plugs, engine air filter, cabin air filter, and inspecting key ignition system components.

Warnings

Ensure engine is completely cool before beginning work to avoid burns from hot components.
Do not over-torque spark plugs as this can damage aluminum cylinder head threads.
ℹ️Use only OEM-specification iridium spark plugs; incorrect heat range or type can cause engine damage.

Parts

  • Spark plugs (Iridium) × 4 — 90919-01253 (Denso IK20TT) or equivalent
  • Engine air filter × 1 — 17801-0T030 or equivalent
  • Cabin air filter × 1 — 87139-02090 or equivalent

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Allow engine to cool completely (at least 2 hours after last operation)
  3. Gather all tools and parts before beginning
  4. Open hood and secure with prop rod

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove engine cover
Grasp the engine cover firmly and pull upward to release the four rubber grommets. The cover is not bolted and removes by friction fit only. Set aside in a clean area.
  2. 2
    Remove air intake components
Disconnect the air intake hose from the throttle body by loosening the hose clamp. Release the clips securing the air box cover and remove the cover. Lift out the old engine air filter and inspect the air box for debris. Clean if necessary.
    Torque spec
    Air Box Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Install new engine air filter
Place the new engine air filter into the air box, ensuring it seats properly in the groove. Replace the air box cover and secure all clips. Reconnect the air intake hose to the throttle body and tighten the hose clamp securely.

    Air Box Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Replace cabin air filter
Open the glove box and remove contents. Press inward on both sides of the glove box to release the stops and lower it fully. Remove the cabin air filter cover by releasing the tabs. Slide out the old cabin air filter, noting airflow direction arrow. Install new filter with arrow pointing toward the vehicle interior. Replace cover and restore glove box to normal position.
  5. 5
    Disconnect ignition coils
Locate all four ignition coils on top of the engine. Press the release tab on each coil electrical connector and pull straight up to disconnect. Keep connectors away from dirt and debris.
  6. 6
    Remove ignition coils
Remove the single 10mm bolt securing each ignition coil. Carefully pull each coil straight up out of the spark plug well. Inspect coil boots for cracks, oil contamination, or carbon tracking. Replace any damaged coils. Set coils aside in order (cylinder 1-4) to maintain installation sequence.
If spark plug wells contain oil, valve cover gasket and spark plug tube seals require replacement to prevent ignition misfire.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Remove old spark plugs
Using a 14mm spark plug socket with extension, carefully remove all four spark plugs. Turn counterclockwise and maintain straight alignment to avoid cross-threading. Inspect old plugs for abnormal wear, oil fouling, or incorrect gap as diagnostic indicators. Compare plug condition across all cylinders.
  8. 8
    Prepare new spark plugs
Verify new spark plugs are correct part number and pre-gapped to 1.0-1.1mm (0.039-0.043 inches). Do NOT re-gap iridium plugs as this can damage the fine electrode. Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads only (avoid getting compound on electrodes). This prevents future seizure in the aluminum head.
  9. 9
    Install new spark plugs
Carefully thread each spark plug by hand into the cylinder head, ensuring straight alignment. Hand-tighten until plug seats against the washer. Using the torque wrench and 14mm spark plug socket, tighten to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft). The plugs should turn approximately 1/16 turn from hand-tight. Do not over-torque.
⚠️Cross-threading spark plugs in aluminum cylinder head will require expensive thread repair. Always start threads by hand and ensure straight entry.

  10. 10
    Reinstall ignition coils
Apply a thin coat of dielectric grease inside each coil boot to prevent moisture intrusion and ensure proper connection. Install each coil back into its original cylinder position, pressing down firmly until fully seated. Install the 10mm mounting bolt and torque to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft). Reconnect each electrical connector until it clicks.

  11. 11
    Inspect ignition system components
Visually inspect all spark plug wires (if equipped with external wires on this engine configuration), coil connectors, and related wiring for damage, corrosion, or wear. Check that all connections are secure and properly seated. Inspect PCV valve and hoses for cracks or blockage.
  12. 12
    Reinstall engine cover
Align the engine cover over the four rubber grommet posts on the valve cover. Press down firmly on all four corners until the cover snaps into place and sits flush.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all electrical connections are secure and fully seated
  2. Confirm air intake system is properly connected with no loose clamps
  3. Ensure no tools or parts are left in engine compartment
  4. Verify glove box operates normally after cabin filter replacement

Verification

  • Start engine and verify smooth idle with no misfires or rough running
  • Check for proper engine response during light acceleration from idle
  • Verify no check engine light or diagnostic trouble codes are present
  • Listen for any abnormal noises or vibrations that were not present before service
  • Confirm all installed components are secure and properly torqued
  • Test drive vehicle for 10-15 minutes to verify normal operation under various load conditions
