This procedure covers removal and replacement of the upper control arm on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla with 1.8L I4 engine, including disconnection of the ball joint and control arm mounting bolts.
Warnings
⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for the vehicle weight.
⚠️The ball joint separator can cause sudden release of tension. Keep hands and body clear of pinch points.
⚠Control arm bolts must be torqued with the vehicle weight on the wheels. Failure to do so will cause premature bushing failure.
ℹ️This procedure is for one side. Repeat for the opposite side if needed. Alignment check is required after completion.

Parts
- Upper control arm assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Ball joint castle nut (if cotter pin equipped) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Loosen wheel lug nuts 1/4 turn before lifting vehicle
- Lift front of vehicle and support on jack stands at manufacturer-specified jacking points
- Remove wheel completely
- Spray control arm bolts and ball joint nut with penetrating oil if corroded
Procedure
- 1Access upper control armLocate the upper control arm assembly at the top of the steering knuckle. The ball joint connects the control arm to the knuckle, and two mounting bolts secure the control arm to the chassis rail.
- 2Remove ball joint castle nutIf equipped with a cotter pin, remove and discard it. Using a 17mm socket, remove the ball joint castle nut completely. Do not reuse the nut if it has a castle design with cotter pin.ℹ️Some models use a standard nut instead of castle nut. Inspect before ordering replacement parts.
- 3Separate ball joint from knucklePosition the ball joint separator between the control arm and knuckle. Strike the separator or tighten the pressing tool until the ball joint stud releases from the knuckle taper. Remove the separator tool once the joint is free.⚠️The knuckle may drop suddenly when the ball joint releases. Support the knuckle with your hand or a block.
- 4Remove front control arm mounting boltLocate the front mounting bolt that secures the control arm to the chassis. Using a 14mm socket and breaker bar, remove the bolt completely. Support the control arm to prevent it from falling.
- 5Remove rear control arm mounting boltUsing a 14mm socket and breaker bar, remove the rear mounting bolt that secures the control arm to the chassis. The control arm is now free to be removed.
- 6Remove upper control armCarefully maneuver the upper control arm out of the mounting area. Inspect the mounting points on the chassis for damage, rust, or deformation. Clean the mounting surfaces with a wire brush if needed.
- 7Install new upper control armPosition the new upper control arm into the chassis mounting points. Insert both mounting bolts hand-tight but do not torque yet. Ensure the control arm is properly seated in both mounting locations.⚠Do NOT torque control arm bolts until the vehicle weight is on the wheels in final step.
- 8Connect ball joint to knuckleAlign the ball joint stud with the hole in the steering knuckle. You may need to use a pry bar to position the knuckle. Push the stud through the knuckle until fully seated.
- 9Install and torque ball joint nutInstall the new ball joint castle nut onto the stud. Torque to specification using a torque wrench. If using a castle nut, align the slots with the cotter pin hole and install a new cotter pin. Bend the pin ends to secure.Torque specBall Joint Nut84 Nm (62 lb-ft)
- 10Reinstall wheelMount the wheel onto the hub and install all lug nuts hand-tight. Lower the vehicle until the tire just touches the ground but the suspension is not yet fully loaded.
- 11Torque control arm bolts with vehicle weight loadedWith the vehicle weight resting on the wheels and suspension at normal ride height, torque both control arm mounting bolts to specification. This ensures the rubber bushings are not pre-loaded in a twisted position.⚠This is a critical step. Torquing with suspension hanging will cause premature bushing failure.Torque specControl Arm Bolts165 Nm (122 lb-ft)
- 12Final wheel installationLift the vehicle slightly and remove jack stands. Lower the vehicle completely to the ground. Torque all wheel lug nuts to specification in a star pattern.Torque specWheel Lug Nuts129 Nm (95 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Reassembly is covered in the main procedure steps
- Ensure all fasteners are torqued to specification
- Verify cotter pin is properly installed on ball joint if equipped
Verification
- Perform visual inspection to confirm all bolts are tight and properly torqued
- Check that the ball joint moves freely without binding
- Test drive vehicle at low speed and verify no unusual noises or handling issues
- Schedule a professional wheel alignment immediately - control arm replacement will affect camber and toe settings
