Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake.
  2. Allow engine to cool to a safe working temperature if recently driven.
  3. Gather all tools, parts, and fluids before beginning.
  4. Raise front of vehicle with floor jack and secure on jack stands at proper lift points.
  5. Remove engine splash shield if equipped (plastic undertray secured by clips and fasteners).

Procedure

  1. 1
    Drain engine oil
Locate the oil drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan toward the rear. Position drain pan underneath. Using a 17mm socket or wrench, loosen and remove the drain plug. Allow oil to drain completely (approximately 5-10 minutes). Inspect drain plug washer for damage and replace with new washer.
  2. 2
    Remove oil filter
Locate the oil filter on the front left side of the engine block. Position drain pan to catch residual oil. Using an oil filter wrench, turn filter counterclockwise to remove. Verify the old filter gasket came off with the filter and did not remain stuck to the engine block mounting surface.
  3. 3
    Install new oil filter
Apply a thin coat of clean engine oil to the rubber gasket on the new oil filter. Thread the new filter onto the mounting boss by hand, turning clockwise. Once the gasket contacts the mounting surface, tighten an additional 3/4 to 1 full turn by hand only. Do not use filter wrench for installation.
  4. 4
    Reinstall drain plug
Clean the drain plug and oil pan drain hole threads with a shop rag. Install new drain plug washer onto the drain plug. Thread drain plug into oil pan by hand initially, then tighten securely with 17mm wrench. Do not overtighten as this may strip the aluminum oil pan threads.
  5. 5
    Refill engine oil
Lower vehicle if desired for easier access to engine bay. Remove oil filler cap on top of valve cover. Using a funnel, add 4.5 quarts of Kia Genuine 5W-20 engine oil. Reinstall oil filler cap. Start engine and allow to run for 30 seconds, then shut off. Wait 2 minutes and check oil level with dipstick, adding oil if necessary to reach the full mark.
  6. 6
    Replace engine air filter
Open the air filter housing located on the driver's side of the engine bay. Release the housing clips (typically 4-6 clips around the perimeter). Lift the cover and remove the old air filter element. Clean any debris from inside the housing with a shop rag. Install new air filter element, ensuring proper seating and airflow direction arrow points toward the engine. Close housing and secure all clips.
  7. 7
    Replace cabin air filter
Open the glove box and remove contents. Locate the glove box stopper arms on each side and squeeze inward to allow glove box to drop down fully. Remove the cabin air filter cover by pressing the locking tabs. Slide out the old cabin air filter, noting the airflow direction arrow. Install new cabin air filter with airflow arrow pointing in the same direction (typically toward the rear of vehicle). Reinstall cover and glove box stopper arms.
  8. 8
    Check and adjust tire pressures
Using a tire pressure gauge, check all four tires plus the spare tire. The recommended pressure is listed on the driver's door jamb sticker (typically 33 PSI front and rear for this model). Adjust tire pressures as needed to match specifications.
  9. 9
    Inspect fluid levels
Check and top off all fluid levels as needed: engine coolant (check reservoir when cold), brake fluid (check master cylinder reservoir), power steering fluid (check reservoir with engine off), windshield washer fluid, and automatic transmission fluid (check dipstick with engine at operating temperature in Park). Top off any fluids that are below the full mark using the appropriate fluids specified.
  10. 10
    Perform visual inspection
Conduct a thorough visual inspection including: brake pad thickness through wheel spokes, tire tread depth and uneven wear patterns, CV boot condition for tears or grease leaks, exhaust system for damage or leaks, suspension components for damage or leaks, drive belts for cracks or glazing, battery terminals for corrosion, and all fluid leaks underneath vehicle. Document any concerns found.
  11. 11
    Verify operation of all lights
Test all exterior lights including headlights (low and high beam), turn signals, brake lights, reverse lights, and license plate lights. Replace any burned out bulbs as needed.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine splash shield if removed, ensuring all clips and fasteners are secure.
  2. Remove jack stands and carefully lower vehicle to the ground.
  3. Reset the maintenance reminder light if equipped following the procedure in the owner's manual (typically through the instrument cluster menu).

Verification

  • Start the engine and verify the oil pressure warning light extinguishes within 2-3 seconds.
  • Inspect underneath the vehicle for any oil leaks from the drain plug or oil filter after running the engine.
  • Verify no warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster.
  • Test drive the vehicle briefly and recheck all fluid levels after the engine reaches operating temperature.
  • Document the service date and mileage for maintenance records.
