This procedure covers the replacement of the front suspension air springs (air bags) on a 2015 Kia Forte 1.8L. Note: The Kia Forte typically uses conventional coil spring struts, not air suspension. This procedure assumes aftermarket air spring conversion or misidentification.
Warnings
⚠️The Kia Forte was not factory-equipped with air suspension. Verify that your vehicle has been converted to air springs before proceeding. This procedure may not apply to standard strut assemblies.
⚠️Compressed air springs store significant energy. Depressurize air suspension system completely before disassembly to prevent sudden release and injury.
⚠Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use properly rated jack stands.
⚠If working with coil spring struts instead of air springs, use proper spring compressors and follow compressed spring safety protocols.

Parts
- Front air spring assembly (left or right) × 1 — Use OEM specification or aftermarket equivalent
- Strut mount bearing (if applicable) × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Strut mount nuts (recommended) × 3 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- If equipped with air suspension, depressurize the system using the vehicle's compressor control or manual release valve
- Loosen front wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on ground
- Raise front of vehicle with floor jack and support securely on jack stands at manufacturer-recommended lift points
- Remove front wheel on the side being serviced
Procedure
- 1Disconnect air line from air springLocate the air supply line connection at the top or bottom of the air spring assembly. Press the release collar and pull the air line connector straight out. Cover the open port to prevent contamination.⚠Ensure system is fully depressurized before disconnecting air lines. Any residual pressure can cause injury or damage components.
- 2Disconnect sway bar linkLocate the sway bar end link connecting to the strut assembly. Hold the ball joint shaft with an Allen key to prevent rotation. Remove the upper nut connecting the link to the strut. Swing the link away from the strut.Torque specSway Bar Link Nuts55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
- 3Disconnect brake line bracketRemove any brake line or ABS sensor brackets attached to the strut housing. Note the routing for reinstallation. Do not disconnect brake lines themselves.
- 4Remove strut-to-knuckle boltsLocate the two bolts connecting the strut to the steering knuckle at the bottom of the assembly. Support the strut assembly with one hand. Remove both bolts completely. Note the orientation of any alignment marks or eccentric washers.⚠The strut assembly will be loose after removing these bolts. Support it to prevent sudden movement or damage to brake lines.Torque specStrut Bolts109 Nm (81 lb-ft)
- 5Remove strut tower mounting nutsOpen the hood and locate the three strut tower mounting nuts at the top of the strut assembly in the engine bay. Remove all three nuts while supporting the strut from below. Carefully lower the strut assembly out through the wheel well.⚠Have an assistant support the strut from below or use a transmission jack to prevent the assembly from falling when the last nut is removed.Torque specStrut Tower Nuts50 Nm (37 lb-ft)
- 6Disassemble strut mount (if applicable)If the air spring is integrated with the strut mount, place the assembly in a secure vise or strut vice. Mark the orientation of the upper mount to the lower assembly. Remove the top center nut while preventing the strut shaft from rotating. Remove upper mount components in order.⚠️If this is a coil spring strut, a spring compressor MUST be used before removing the center nut to prevent violent spring release.
- 7Remove old air springSeparate the air spring from the strut assembly. Note the orientation and any alignment marks. Inspect the strut shaft for damage, scoring, or fluid leakage. If shaft is damaged, the entire strut assembly may need replacement.
- 8Install new air springPosition the new air spring onto the strut assembly, ensuring proper alignment with any guide pins or orientation marks. Verify that all sealing surfaces are clean and free of debris. Install any retaining clips or fasteners per manufacturer instructions.
- 9Reassemble strut mountReinstall the upper strut mount components in reverse order of removal. Align the mount to the marks made during disassembly. Install the center nut and torque according to manufacturer specifications (typically 50-60 Nm if not specified).
- 10Install strut assembly into vehicleLift the strut assembly into position through the wheel well. Align the upper mounting studs with the strut tower holes. Install the three strut tower nuts finger-tight, then torque to specification in a star pattern.Torque specStrut Tower Nuts50 Nm (37 lb-ft)
- 11Connect strut to steering knuckleAlign the strut with the steering knuckle mounting holes. Insert both strut-to-knuckle bolts, ensuring proper orientation of any eccentric washers or alignment markings. Torque bolts to specification.Torque specStrut Bolts109 Nm (81 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect sway bar link and brake bracketsReconnect the sway bar end link to the strut. Hold the ball joint shaft with an Allen key and torque the nut to specification. Reattach any brake line or ABS sensor brackets in their original positions.Torque specSway Bar Link Nuts55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
- 13Reconnect air linePush the air line connector firmly into the air spring port until it clicks into place. Gently tug on the line to verify secure connection. Ensure the line is routed away from any moving or hot components.
- 14Reinstall wheel and lower vehicleReinstall the wheel and hand-tighten lug nuts in a star pattern. Lower the vehicle until the tire just contacts the ground. Torque lug nuts to specification in a star pattern. Fully lower vehicle and remove jack stands.Torque specWheel Lug Nuts129 Nm (95 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Repeat procedure for opposite side if replacing both air springs
- If equipped with electronic air suspension, use the vehicle's system controls or scan tool to repressurize and calibrate the system
- Check for air leaks by listening for hissing sounds around connections
- Verify vehicle sits at proper ride height after pressurization
Verification
- Start vehicle and activate air suspension system (if electronically controlled) to verify proper inflation
- Check that vehicle sits at normal ride height on both sides with no sagging
- Listen for air leaks around all connections and fittings
- Perform visual inspection of air spring installation ensuring no pinching or interference
- Test drive vehicle at low speed and verify normal suspension operation and handling
- Have front end alignment checked, as strut replacement typically affects camber and toe settings
