This procedure covers removal and replacement of the airbag control module (ACM) on a 2015 Kia Forte, including proper battery disconnect procedures and system reset requirements.
Warnings
⚠️CRITICAL SAFETY SYSTEM: Improper airbag module installation or programming can result in airbag non-deployment during a crash or unintended deployment causing severe injury or death. If you are not absolutely certain of your ability to complete this procedure correctly, seek professional service.
⚠️Wait a MINIMUM of 3 minutes after battery disconnect before touching any airbag system components. The airbag system capacitors can retain sufficient charge to deploy airbags and cause serious injury.
⚠️NEVER work on airbag components with the battery connected. Always disconnect negative terminal first and wait the full 3 minutes.
⚠️The replacement airbag module MUST be programmed to the vehicle VIN using factory-level diagnostic equipment. An unprogrammed or incorrectly programmed module will not function properly.
⚠Handle the airbag module carefully. Do not drop, strike, or expose to moisture. Store with connector side facing upward.
⚠Document all fault codes before beginning work. Photograph or write down all connector orientations and routing.
ℹ️This procedure requires dealer-level or equivalent diagnostic equipment capable of ACM programming and calibration. Standard OBD-II scanners are insufficient.

Preparation
- Ensure vehicle is on level ground with ignition OFF and key removed from vehicle
- Ensure no occupants are in the vehicle during any part of this procedure
- Review all airbag system fault codes and document them using diagnostic scanner
- Disconnect negative battery terminal first, then positive terminal
- Wait exactly 3 minutes minimum for airbag system capacitor discharge - set a timer
- Verify all airbag-related warning lights are off after waiting period (no power to vehicle)
- Position driver's seat to full rear position for access clearance
Procedure
- 1Remove center console lower trim panelLocate the center console lower trim panel between the front seats. Remove the trim panel by carefully prying at the clip locations using trim removal tools. The panel is secured by push-type retainer clips. Work slowly to avoid breaking clips. Set panel aside in a safe location.
- 2Access airbag control module mounting areaThe airbag control module is located under the center console between the front seats, typically mounted to the floor tunnel. You may need to remove additional carpeting or insulation to expose the module. The module is a rectangular metal box approximately 4x6 inches with a large multi-pin connector. Take a clear photo of the module position and connector orientation for reference during reinstallation.
- 3Disconnect airbag control module electrical connectorLocate the main electrical connector on the airbag control module. The connector will have a locking tab or slider mechanism. Carefully press or slide the locking mechanism to release it, then pull the connector straight off the module. Do NOT pull on wires. Inspect connector pins for corrosion, damage, or bent pins. Clean connector with electrical contact cleaner if needed. Cover the disconnected connector with a clean cloth to prevent contamination.⚠Ensure the full 3 minutes have elapsed since battery disconnect before touching this connector. Verify battery is still disconnected.
- 4Remove module ground connectionLocate the ground strap or ground bolt connection on the airbag module or mounting bracket. Remove the ground connection bolt completely. Inspect the ground contact surfaces for corrosion. If corrosion is present, clean both mating surfaces with a wire brush or fine sandpaper until bare metal is visible. A proper ground connection is essential for airbag system operation.
- 5Remove airbag control module mounting boltsLocate the module mounting bolts securing the airbag control module to the floor tunnel bracket. There are typically 2-4 bolts. Using a 10mm or 12mm socket, remove all mounting bolts completely. Support the module with one hand as you remove the last bolt to prevent it from falling. Carefully remove the module from the vehicle and place it on a clean work surface with the connector side facing UP.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 6Inspect mounting bracket and verify replacement moduleInspect the mounting bracket on the vehicle for damage, corrosion, or deformation. Verify the bracket is securely attached to the floor tunnel. Compare the new airbag control module to the old unit - they should be identical in size, connector configuration, and mounting hole pattern. Verify the new module part number matches Kia specifications for the 2015 Forte. DO NOT install a module from a different vehicle model or year.⚠️Installing an incorrect airbag module can result in complete airbag system failure. Verify part compatibility before installation.
- 7Install new airbag control modulePosition the new airbag control module onto the mounting bracket in the same orientation as the original. Align all mounting holes. Insert all mounting bolts and hand-thread them to prevent cross-threading. Once all bolts are hand-tight, torque them in a cross-pattern to specification using a torque wrench. Verify the module is firmly secured with no movement.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 8Reconnect ground connectionReconnect the ground strap or ground bolt to the module or mounting bracket. Ensure the contact surface is clean bare metal for proper electrical contact. Install the ground bolt and torque to specification if covered in the provided torque specs, otherwise tighten firmly. A secure ground connection is critical for airbag system functionality.
- 9Reconnect airbag module electrical connectorRemove the protective covering from the electrical connector. Align the connector with the module connector port, ensuring proper orientation using your reference photo. Push the connector firmly onto the module until you hear or feel it click into place. Engage the locking mechanism by pressing or sliding it into the locked position. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully locked and seated.
- 10Reinstall center console componentsReplace any insulation or carpeting that was moved. Reinstall the center console lower trim panel by aligning the clips and pressing firmly until all clips engage. Verify all trim pieces are fully seated and secure. Return the driver's seat to normal position.
- 11Reconnect battery and perform initial system checkReconnect the positive battery terminal first, then the negative terminal. Torque battery terminal bolts to specification - DO NOT overtighten as this can damage the battery terminal. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start engine). Observe the airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. It should illuminate for approximately 6 seconds during bulb check, then extinguish. If the light remains on or flashes, do NOT drive the vehicle - proceed to diagnostic scanning.⚠️If the airbag warning light remains illuminated or flashes after initial power-up, the system has detected a fault. Do NOT drive the vehicle until the fault is diagnosed and corrected.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 12Program airbag control module to vehicle VINConnect the Kia GDS diagnostic scanner or equivalent professional-grade tool to the vehicle OBD-II port. Follow the scanner's procedure to access the airbag control module programming function. Program the new module with the vehicle VIN. This step is MANDATORY - the module will not function correctly without VIN programming. The scanner will guide you through the programming sequence. Do not interrupt power during programming.⚠️VIN programming is absolutely required. An unprogrammed airbag module will not deploy airbags in a crash. This step cannot be skipped or substituted.
- 13Clear fault codes and perform system verificationUsing the diagnostic scanner, clear all airbag-related fault codes. Cycle the ignition OFF, then back to ON. Verify the airbag warning light performs the normal bulb check (6 seconds ON, then OFF). Use the scanner to verify communication with the airbag module and check for any stored or pending fault codes. All airbag system components should show as operational with no faults.
Reassembly
- All trim panels must be fully seated with all clips engaged
- Verify no tools or parts were left in the vehicle interior
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully locked and secured
- Confirm battery terminals are properly torqued and corrosion-free
Verification
- Start the engine and verify the airbag warning light extinguishes after the initial bulb check (approximately 6 seconds)
- Using the diagnostic scanner, verify no airbag system fault codes are present
- Confirm the scanner shows successful communication with the airbag control module
- Verify the module is properly programmed with the correct vehicle VIN using the scanner
- Test all airbag-related components if possible with the scanner (sensor communication check)
- Perform a test drive and verify the airbag light does not illuminate during operation
- Re-scan for codes after test drive to ensure no new faults have been set
- Document the repair with date, mileage, and verification that all systems are functioning properly
