This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the lower ball joint on a 2015 Kia Forte with 1.8L I4 engine.
Warnings
⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for the vehicle weight.
⚠The ball joint is under suspension load. Use proper tools to separate components to avoid injury.
⚠Control arm bolts must be torqued with vehicle weight on the wheels to avoid premature bushing failure.

Parts
- Lower ball joint assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Cotter pin × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Pinch bolt (if applicable) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Loosen wheel lug nuts 1/4 turn while vehicle is on ground
- Raise front of vehicle with floor jack at designated jacking point
- Support vehicle securely on jack stands placed at frame reinforcement points
- Remove front wheel completely
Procedure
- 1Remove cotter pin and loosen ball joint nutLocate the lower ball joint where it connects to the steering knuckle. Use pliers to straighten and remove the cotter pin from the ball joint castle nut. Discard the old cotter pin. Loosen but do not remove the ball joint nut several turns to protect threads during separation.
- 2Disconnect sway bar link if necessaryIf the sway bar link interferes with ball joint access, hold the shaft with an Allen key and remove the lower sway bar link nut. Swing the link out of the way.Torque specSway Bar Link Nuts55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
- 3Separate ball joint from steering knuckleUse a ball joint separator or pickle fork to break the taper connection between the ball joint stud and the steering knuckle. Insert the tool between the knuckle and control arm, then strike firmly or apply pressure until the joint separates. Remove the ball joint nut completely once separated.
- 4Support lower control armPlace a floor jack or jack stand under the outer portion of the lower control arm near the ball joint to support the arm and prevent it from dropping when the ball joint is removed. Apply just enough pressure to support the weight without loading the suspension.
- 5Remove ball joint mounting fastenersLocate the ball joint-to-control-arm mounting bolts on the underside of the lower control arm. Remove these fasteners completely. Note the orientation and position of any washers or alignment tabs. The ball joint may be bolted or riveted; if riveted, drill out rivets with appropriate size bit.
- 6Remove old ball jointExtract the ball joint from the control arm. If it's pressed in, a ball joint press tool may be required. Clean the mounting area on the control arm thoroughly with a wire brush, removing any rust, debris, or old gasket material.
- 7Install new ball jointPosition the new ball joint in the control arm mounting location, ensuring proper orientation. If the ball joint is pressed in, use a ball joint press to seat it fully. If bolted, align the bolt holes and install new mounting bolts finger-tight. Torque ball joint mounting bolts per service specifications if different from control arm bolts.
- 8Reconnect ball joint to steering knuckleAlign the ball joint stud with the hole in the steering knuckle. If necessary, use a pry bar to position the knuckle. Install the ball joint nut and torque to specification. If applicable, continue tightening to align the next cotter pin hole, never loosen to align. Install new cotter pin and bend ends to secure.Torque specBall Joint Nut97 Nm (71 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect sway bar linkIf the sway bar link was disconnected, reconnect it to the lower control arm or strut. Hold the shaft with an Allen key and torque the nut to specification.Torque specSway Bar Link Nuts55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
- 10Install wheel and lower vehicle partiallyMount the wheel onto the hub and install lug nuts hand-tight. Lower the vehicle until the tire just contacts the ground with minimal weight on it. This allows the suspension to settle to normal ride height for final torquing.
- 11Final torque proceduresWith vehicle weight on the wheels (tire touching ground), torque the control arm bolts to specification if they were loosened or removed. Fully lower the vehicle to the ground and torque wheel lug nuts to specification in a star pattern.Torque specControl Arm Bolts165 Nm (122 lb-ft)Wheel Lug Nuts129 Nm (95 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Always use a new cotter pin on the ball joint castle nut
- Ensure all suspension fasteners are torqued with vehicle at ride height to prevent bushing bind
- Double-check that ball joint taper is fully seated in the steering knuckle before torquing
Verification
- With vehicle on ground, bounce the front suspension and listen for any clunking or looseness
- Verify the wheel can be turned lock-to-lock smoothly without binding
- Check that the new cotter pin is properly installed and bent
- Road test vehicle at low speed and verify no unusual noises or steering behavior
- Schedule front end alignment as replacing ball joint will affect alignment settings
