This procedure covers the replacement of the upper ball joint on a 2015 Kia Forte with 1.8L I4 engine, requiring removal of the upper control arm or replacement of the ball joint assembly.
Warnings
⚠️Ensure vehicle is safely supported on jack stands rated for the vehicle weight. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
⚠The upper ball joint is a critical suspension component. Improper installation can result in loss of vehicle control.
⚠Ball joint separator tools can apply significant force. Wear eye protection and ensure the tool is properly seated before applying force.
ℹ️Some upper ball joints are pressed into the control arm and require special tools. Others are integrated with the control arm requiring full arm replacement.

Parts
- Upper ball joint or upper control arm assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Cotter pin × 1 — Standard automotive cotter pin
- Pinch bolt (if applicable) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Loosen wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on ground
- Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands at manufacturer-specified jacking points
- Remove front wheel on affected side
- Spray all fasteners with penetrating oil and allow to soak for 10-15 minutes
- Verify whether your vehicle uses a replaceable ball joint or requires full control arm replacement
Procedure
- 1Disconnect sway bar link (if necessary)If the sway bar link interferes with access, hold the shaft with an Allen key and remove the upper nut connecting the sway bar link to the strut or control arm. Move the link out of the way.Torque specSway Bar Link Nuts55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
- 2Remove cotter pin and loosen ball joint nutLocate the upper ball joint at the top of the steering knuckle. Remove and discard the cotter pin from the ball joint castle nut. Using a 17mm or 19mm socket, loosen the ball joint nut but do not remove it completely yet. Leave it threaded on a few turns to protect the threads.
- 3Separate ball joint from knuckleUsing a ball joint separator tool or pickle fork, position the tool between the upper control arm and the steering knuckle at the ball joint taper. Strike or apply pressure according to the tool design to break the taper loose. Once the taper is broken, remove the ball joint nut completely and separate the ball joint from the knuckle.⚠The ball joint may release suddenly when the taper breaks. Ensure surrounding components and hands are clear.
- 4Remove upper control arm boltsSupport the upper control arm with one hand or a suitable support. Locate the control arm mounting bolts at the strut tower or frame rail. Remove the control arm bolts completely. Note the position and orientation of any washers or alignment shims for reinstallation.ℹ️Mark or photograph the position of any alignment shims before removal to maintain approximate alignment settings.Torque specControl Arm Bolts165 Nm (122 lb-ft)
- 5Remove upper control armCarefully remove the upper control arm from the vehicle. If a pinch bolt secures the ball joint to the knuckle instead of a castle nut, remove the pinch bolt and separate accordingly. Inspect the control arm bushings and mounting points for wear or damage.
- 6Replace ball joint or control arm assemblyIf the ball joint is serviceable separately, use a press or ball joint service tool to remove the old ball joint from the control arm and press in the new ball joint per the tool manufacturer's instructions. If the ball joint is integrated, proceed with the new control arm assembly. Clean all mounting surfaces with a wire brush.ℹ️Many 2015 Kia Forte models use a non-serviceable ball joint requiring complete control arm replacement. Verify your specific configuration before attempting to press out the ball joint.
- 7Install control arm to chassisPosition the upper control arm (with new ball joint) into the mounting location. Install any alignment shims in their original positions. Thread in the control arm mounting bolts hand-tight. Do not torque these bolts until the vehicle weight is on the wheels per manufacturer specification.
- 8Connect ball joint to knuckleGuide the ball joint stud into the steering knuckle. Ensure the taper is clean and free of debris. Install the ball joint castle nut and tighten to specification. Align the castle nut slots with the hole in the ball joint stud and install a new cotter pin. Bend the cotter pin ends to secure.⚠If castle nut slots do not align with the cotter pin hole at specified torque, tighten further to the next alignment point. Never loosen the nut to align the cotter pin hole.Torque specBall Joint Nut97 Nm (71 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect sway bar linkIf the sway bar link was disconnected, reconnect it to the strut or control arm. Hold the shaft with an Allen key and tighten the nut to specification.Torque specSway Bar Link Nuts55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
- 10Reinstall wheel and lower vehicleInstall the wheel and thread lug nuts by hand. Lower the vehicle until the tire just touches the ground but the suspension is not yet compressed. Torque the wheel lug nuts in a star pattern to specification.Torque specWheel Lug Nuts129 Nm (95 lb-ft)
- 11Torque control arm bolts with vehicle weight on wheelsFully lower the vehicle so the suspension is at normal ride height with vehicle weight on the wheels. Torque the upper control arm mounting bolts to specification. This ensures the bushings are torqued in their normal operating position, preventing premature wear.⚠Torquing control arm bolts with suspension unloaded will cause premature bushing failure. Always torque with vehicle at ride height.Torque specControl Arm Bolts165 Nm (122 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all fasteners are tightened to proper specifications
- Verify cotter pin is properly installed and bent
- Check that no tools or parts were left in the wheel well
Verification
- Test drive vehicle at low speed and verify no unusual noises from the suspension
- Check for proper steering response and no pulling to either side
- Have a professional wheel alignment performed immediately after ball joint replacement to ensure proper tire wear and handling
- After 50-100 miles, re-torque all suspension fasteners and verify cotter pin security
