Replacement of the negative battery cable, which connects the battery negative terminal to the vehicle chassis ground points and engine block.

Warnings

Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may trigger some electronic module relearning procedures.
Ensure the negative cable never contacts the positive terminal during removal or installation to prevent sparks and electrical damage.
ℹ️Vehicle is equipped with an integrated starter-generator system. Allow 3 minutes after disconnection before proceeding to ensure capacitor discharge.

Parts

  • Negative battery cable assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake.
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key from vehicle.
  3. Open hood and secure with prop rod.
  4. Identify all ground point locations: battery negative terminal, chassis ground near battery tray, and engine block ground.
  5. Take photos of cable routing for reference during reinstallation.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect negative terminal at battery
Using a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt at the battery post. Remove the cable from the battery and position it away from the terminal to prevent accidental contact.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Wait for system discharge
Wait a minimum of 3 minutes to allow all vehicle electrical systems and capacitors to fully discharge before proceeding with further disassembly.
  3. 3
    Remove chassis ground connection
Locate the negative cable ground point on the chassis near the battery tray. Using a 12mm or 13mm socket (verify size), remove the ground strap bolt securing the cable to the chassis. Note the bolt location and any washers or spacers for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Ground Strap Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Remove engine block ground connection
Trace the negative cable to the engine block ground point, typically located on the transmission bellhousing or engine block near the battery. Using a 13mm socket, remove the ground cable bolt. Keep track of any washers or grounding straps that may be shared at this location.
ℹ️Multiple ground straps may share this connection point. Do not remove other ground straps unless they interfere with cable removal.
    Torque spec
    Ground Cable Bolt13 Nm (10 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Remove cable from vehicle
Carefully trace the entire cable path and release any cable clips or routing ties. Remove the old negative battery cable from the vehicle, noting the exact routing path for the new cable installation.
  6. 6
    Clean all ground connection points
Using a wire brush, thoroughly clean all grounding surfaces on the chassis and engine block where the cable connects. Remove all corrosion, paint, or oxidation to ensure bare metal contact. Clean the battery negative post with a battery terminal cleaner or wire brush.
ℹ️Proper metal-to-metal contact at ground points is critical for electrical system function and starting performance.
  7. 7
    Route new negative cable
Route the new negative battery cable following the exact path of the original cable. Ensure the cable does not contact any sharp edges, moving parts, or hot exhaust components. Secure with original clips and routing ties.
  8. 8
    Connect engine block ground
Attach the negative cable to the engine block ground point. Install any shared ground straps in their original positions. Install the ground cable bolt and tighten to specification using a torque wrench.
    Torque spec
    Ground Cable Bolt13 Nm (10 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Connect chassis ground
Attach the negative cable ground strap to the chassis mounting point. Ensure the contact surface is clean and the cable ring terminal is properly seated. Install the ground strap bolt with any original washers and tighten to specification.
    Torque spec
    Ground Strap Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reconnect battery negative terminal
Apply a thin coating of dielectric grease to the battery negative post if desired. Place the cable terminal onto the battery negative post and ensure it is fully seated. Install the terminal bolt and tighten to specification. Do not overtighten as this can damage the terminal or battery post.
Overtightening battery terminal bolts can crack the battery terminal or damage the lead post.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Verify all ground connections are tight and properly torqued.
  2. Ensure cable routing does not interfere with any moving components or engine covers.
  3. Reset clock and radio presets as needed.

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position and verify all warning lights illuminate normally on instrument cluster.
  • Start the engine and confirm proper starting function with no clicking or slow cranking.
  • Verify all electrical accessories function properly (lights, radio, power windows, etc.).
  • Check that no warning lights remain illuminated after engine start.
  • Inspect all ground connection points for tightness and proper seating.
