Complete replacement of both positive and negative battery cables on a 2015 Kia Forte with 1.8L I4 engine, including all ground connections and cable routing.

Warnings

⚠️Always disconnect negative terminal first and reconnect it last to prevent short circuits
Disconnecting battery will erase radio presets and may trigger relearning procedures for idle control and power windows
Ensure ignition is OFF and key is removed before beginning work
ℹ️Battery cables have specific routing paths - photograph or note routing before removal

Parts

  • Positive battery cable assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Negative battery cable assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and ensure ignition is off with key removed
  2. Allow engine to cool completely if vehicle was recently operated
  3. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  4. Photograph battery cable routing and connection points for reference during installation
  5. Locate all ground points: battery terminal, engine block, and body ground locations

Procedure

  1. 1
Remove battery hold-down and disconnect negative terminal
Remove the battery hold-down bracket by loosening the 10mm hold-down bolt. Loosen the 10mm bolt on the negative (-) battery terminal and remove the cable from the battery post. Move the cable away from the battery to prevent accidental contact.
    Torque spec
    Battery Hold-Down Bolt10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Disconnect positive terminal
Loosen the 10mm bolt on the positive (+) battery terminal and remove the cable from the battery post. Be careful not to allow the positive terminal to contact any grounded metal surfaces.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Remove battery from vehicle
Lift the battery straight up and out of the battery tray. Set aside in a safe location. This provides better access to trace cable routing and connection points.
Battery weighs approximately 40 lbs - use proper lifting technique
  4. 4
Trace and disconnect negative cable ground points
Follow the negative cable from the battery tray to all ground connection points. Typical locations include: body ground near battery tray (13mm bolt), engine block ground (13mm bolt), and chassis ground strap connections. Remove all mounting bolts and disconnect the negative cable completely. Note any additional ground straps sharing the same mounting points.
    Torque spec
    Ground Bolt13 Nm (10 lb-ft)
    Ground Cable Bolt13 Nm (10 lb-ft)
    Ground Strap Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  5. 5
Trace and disconnect positive cable connections
Follow the positive cable from the battery tray through the engine compartment. Disconnect at the fuse box connection point (typically 12mm bolt) and at the starter motor connection (13mm bolt). Remove any cable routing clips or ties securing the cable to the vehicle structure.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove old cables from vehicle
Carefully extract both positive and negative cables from the engine compartment, noting their routing paths through wire looms, clips, and protective grommets. Remove any damaged or corroded cable routing hardware.
ℹ️Inspect all connection points for corrosion - clean mounting surfaces if necessary
  7. 7
    Clean all connection points
Use a wire brush to thoroughly clean all battery terminal connection points, ground bolt threads and contact surfaces, starter connection point, and fuse box connection point. Remove all corrosion, dirt, and oxidation to ensure good electrical contact. Clean battery posts with battery terminal cleaner.
ℹ️Clean metal-to-metal contact surfaces are critical for proper electrical conductivity and vehicle operation
  8. 8
Route and install new positive cable
Route the new positive cable through the same path as the original, ensuring it follows factory routing through grommets and away from hot or moving components. Connect to the starter motor first, then to the fuse box connection point. Do not fully tighten mounting bolts yet - snug them finger-tight to allow final positioning adjustment.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  9. 9
Route and install new negative cable
Route the new negative cable from the battery tray location to all ground points: engine block ground, body ground, and chassis ground strap locations. Ensure the cable follows the factory routing path and does not contact sharp edges or hot components. Connect all ground points finger-tight initially.
    Torque spec
    Ground Bolt13 Nm (10 lb-ft)
    Ground Cable Bolt13 Nm (10 lb-ft)
    Ground Strap Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Torque all cable connections
Working from furthest connection back toward battery: Torque starter and fuse box mounting bolts to 32 Nm (24 lb-ft). Torque all ground bolts and ground cable bolts to 13 Nm (10 lb-ft). Torque ground strap bolts to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft). Verify all connections are tight and cables are properly seated in routing clips.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
    Ground Bolt13 Nm (10 lb-ft)
    Ground Cable Bolt13 Nm (10 lb-ft)
    Ground Strap Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reinstall battery and connect terminals
Clean battery tray if necessary, then reinstall battery in tray. Apply thin coating of dielectric grease to battery posts if desired. Connect positive terminal first and torque battery terminal bolt to 6 Nm (4 lb-ft). Connect negative terminal and torque to 6 Nm (4 lb-ft). Reinstall battery hold-down bracket and torque hold-down bolt to 10 Nm (8 lb-ft).
Do not overtighten battery terminal bolts - excessive torque can crack battery posts
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
    Battery Hold-Down Bolt10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Secure cable routing
Install new cable ties or routing clips as needed to secure both cables in their proper routing paths. Ensure cables do not contact sharp edges, exhaust components, or moving parts. Verify adequate slack exists for engine movement without cable strain.
ℹ️Improper cable routing can cause chafing, short circuits, or cable damage from heat or moving components

Reassembly

  1. Verify all cable connections are torqued to specification and properly seated
  2. Ensure battery is secure in tray with hold-down properly installed
  3. Double-check that no tools or loose items remain in engine compartment

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position (do not start) and verify all dashboard warning lights illuminate normally
  • Start engine and verify it cranks normally with strong starter engagement
  • Check that all electrical accessories function properly (lights, radio, windows, climate control)
  • Verify no warning lights remain illuminated after engine start
  • Perform power window auto-up/down relearning procedure if equipped: hold window switch up until fully closed, continue holding for 2 seconds; repeat for down position
  • Reset clock and radio presets as needed
  • Inspect all cable connections for proper seating and signs of arcing or overheating after test drive
