This procedure covers the removal and replacement of ignition coils on a 2015 Kia Forte with the 1.8L I4 engine, including access to spark plugs.
Warnings
⚠Allow engine to cool for at least 30 minutes before beginning work to avoid burns from hot components.
⚠Do not disconnect battery on this vehicle unless absolutely necessary, as it may cause ECU adaptation loss and idle issues.
ℹ️Mark or photograph coil connector positions before removal to ensure correct cylinder assignment during reinstallation.

Parts
- Ignition coil assembly × 4 — 27301-2E000 or equivalent
- Spark plugs (if replacing) × 4 — 18854-11070 or NGK equivalent
Preparation
- Ensure engine is cool to the touch
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Remove engine cover by pulling upward on perimeter clips (no tools required)
- Identify all four ignition coil locations on top of valve cover
Procedure
- 1Disconnect ignition coil electrical connectorsPress down on the locking tab of each coil connector and pull straight up to disconnect. There are four connectors, one per cylinder. Note the cylinder positions: cylinders are numbered 1-4 from timing belt side to transmission side.
- 2Remove ignition coil mounting boltsUsing a 10mm socket with extension, remove the single mounting bolt from each ignition coil. Keep bolts organized by cylinder position if they show wear patterns.Torque specIgnition Coil Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 3Extract ignition coils from valve coverGrasp each coil firmly and pull straight upward with a slight twisting motion to break the seal. The coil boots fit into deep spark plug wells. If a coil is stuck, gently rotate while pulling - do not pry against the valve cover as it may crack.
- 4Inspect coil boots and spark plug wellsExamine the rubber boot on each coil for cracks, oil contamination, or carbon tracking. Check inside spark plug wells for oil accumulation (indicates valve cover gasket failure) or debris. Clean wells with compressed air if available.⚠If oil is present in spark plug wells, valve cover gasket replacement is required to prevent future coil failure.
- 5Remove spark plugs (if replacing)If replacing spark plugs, use a 16mm spark plug socket with extension to remove each plug. Turn counterclockwise approximately 8-10 full turns. Inspect old plugs for abnormal wear patterns that may indicate engine issues.ℹ️Gap new spark plugs to 0.039-0.043 inches (1.0-1.1mm) before installation, even if pre-gapped.
- 6Install new spark plugs (if applicable)Apply a thin coat of anti-seize compound to spark plug threads (avoid getting compound on electrode). Thread plugs in by hand to prevent cross-threading, then torque to specification using spark plug socket and torque wrench. Install all four plugs before proceeding.⚠️Over-torquing spark plugs in aluminum heads can strip threads and require costly head repair. Use torque wrench, not impact tools.Torque specSpark Plugs - Aluminum Head20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 7Prepare new ignition coilsApply a thin layer of dielectric grease to the inside of each new coil boot where it contacts the spark plug insulator. This prevents boot seizure and moisture intrusion. Do not apply grease to electrical terminals.
- 8Install new ignition coilsAlign each coil with its spark plug well and press down firmly until the coil seats completely. The boot must fully engage the spark plug. A distinct 'click' or solid stop indicates proper seating. Ensure coil mounting holes align with valve cover bolt holes.
- 9Install and torque coil mounting boltsThread each coil mounting bolt by hand first to prevent cross-threading. Using a 10mm socket and torque wrench, tighten all four bolts to specification in a criss-cross pattern (cylinders 1-4-2-3).Torque specIgnition Coil Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorsPush each electrical connector onto its corresponding coil until the locking tab clicks into place. Verify connection by gently tugging on each connector - it should not pull free. Ensure wiring harness is routed away from hot exhaust components.
- 11Reinstall engine coverAlign engine cover mounting grommets with valve cover studs and press down firmly around perimeter until all clips snap into place. Ensure cover is fully seated and secure.
Reassembly
- Double-check all electrical connectors are fully engaged and locked
- Verify no tools or parts are left in engine bay
- Ensure engine cover is properly secured
Verification
- Start engine and listen for smooth idle with no misfires or hesitation
- Check for illuminated check engine light or flashing MIL (indicates active misfire)
- Rev engine to 2000-2500 RPM briefly to confirm smooth acceleration
- Scan for diagnostic trouble codes with OBD-II scanner if available - there should be no P030X misfire codes
- Inspect around coils for any signs of arcing or unusual sounds during engine operation
- Test drive vehicle for 5-10 minutes to verify normal performance under load
