This procedure covers the removal and installation of the exhaust tip on a 2015 Kia Forte with 1.8L I4 engine, including clamp or bolt removal and proper fitment verification.

Warnings

⚠️Allow exhaust system to cool completely before beginning work. Exhaust components can remain hot for over an hour after engine shutdown and cause severe burns.
Work in a well-ventilated area. Exhaust residue may contain harmful deposits.
ℹ️This vehicle may have a clamp-on tip or a welded tip. Welded tips require cutting and are beyond the scope of this procedure.

Tools required

Wire brush
Torque wrenchEssential
Jack and jack stands
Wheel chocksEssential

Parts

  • Exhaust tip × 1 — Use OEM specification or aftermarket equivalent
  • Clamp or mounting hardware × 1 — Typically included with aftermarket tips

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind front wheels
  3. Allow exhaust system to cool completely (minimum 1 hour after engine operation)
  4. If needed for access, raise rear of vehicle with jack and support on jack stands
  5. Inspect exhaust tip connection type (clamp, bolts, or welded)

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access exhaust tip
Position yourself under the rear of the vehicle with adequate lighting. Locate the exhaust tip connection point, typically 6-12 inches forward of the tip exit. Identify whether the tip is secured with a band clamp, bolt clamp, or slip-fit connection.
  2. 2
    Apply penetrating oil
Spray penetrating oil liberally on all clamp bolts, nuts, or connection points. Allow 5-10 minutes for penetration to ease removal, especially on original equipment that may be corroded.
  3. 3
    Loosen and remove clamp
Using appropriate socket (typically 12mm or 13mm), loosen the clamp bolt(s) or band clamp completely. For band clamps, remove the bolt entirely and spread the clamp. For U-bolt clamps, remove both nuts and the U-bolt assembly. Keep hardware if reusing.
  4. 4
    Remove old exhaust tip
Twist the exhaust tip gently while pulling rearward to break any carbon seal. If tip is stuck, apply additional penetrating oil at the joint and wait. Use twisting motion to work tip free. Avoid excessive force that could damage the tailpipe.
  5. 5
    Clean mounting surface
Use wire brush to clean the outer surface of the tailpipe where the new tip will mount. Remove all carbon buildup, rust, and old gasket material to ensure proper fit and seal. Wipe clean with shop towel.
  6. 6
    Test fit new exhaust tip
Slide new exhaust tip onto the tailpipe without tightening. Check that it slides on at least 2-3 inches for secure mounting. Verify tip alignment and orientation (vertical angle and rotation) before securing. Adjust position so tip exits parallel to bumper.
  7. 7
    Secure new exhaust tip
Once proper position and alignment are confirmed, tighten the clamp bolt(s) or band clamp securely. For band clamps, tighten bolt evenly until clamp is snug against tip and pipe. For bolt clamps, tighten to manufacturer specification (typically 30-35 lb-ft for exhaust clamps). Ensure tip cannot rotate or slide when hand pressure is applied.
  8. 8
    Final alignment check
Verify exhaust tip is centered in bumper cutout and aligned properly. Check clearance to bumper (minimum 1 inch recommended). Make final adjustments by slightly loosening clamp, repositioning, and re-tightening if necessary.

Reassembly

  1. Verify clamp is fully tightened and tip cannot move by hand
  2. Ensure tip has adequate clearance from bumper and body panels
  3. If vehicle was raised, lower from jack stands safely
  4. Remove wheel chocks

Verification

  • Start engine and check for exhaust leaks at tip connection (listen for hissing or unusual sounds)
  • Verify no rattling or vibration from exhaust tip during idle
  • Visually confirm tip remains properly aligned after engine vibration
  • Check that tip does not contact bumper or body panels during engine operation
  • Take short test drive and re-check tip security and alignment after thermal expansion
