Parts
- Fuel filler cap × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and turn off ignition
- Allow engine to cool if recently operated
Procedure
- 1Locate fuel filler doorThe fuel filler door is located on the driver's side rear quarter panel. Press the rear edge of the door to release the spring-loaded latch and open it fully.
- 2Remove old fuel capTurn the existing fuel cap counterclockwise until it releases from the filler neck. The cap will click several times as you turn it - continue turning past the clicks until it comes free. Remove the tether from the fuel door bracket if attached.
- 3Inspect filler neck sealVisually inspect the fuel filler neck opening for debris, damage, or corrosion. Wipe clean with a lint-free cloth if necessary. Check that the sealing surface is smooth and undamaged.
- 4Install new fuel capPosition the new fuel cap onto the filler neck, ensuring the threads align properly. Turn clockwise until you hear at least 3 distinct clicks, indicating the cap is properly seated and torqued. Do not over-tighten past the clicking point.
- 5Attach tether and close doorIf the cap has a tether, attach it to the retaining bracket on the fuel filler door. Ensure the tether is properly seated to prevent loss. Close the fuel filler door firmly until it latches.
Reassembly
- No reassembly required for this procedure
Verification
- Open and close the fuel cap to verify it clicks properly at least 3 times when tightening
- Confirm the fuel filler door closes and latches securely
- If replacing due to check engine light, clear diagnostic codes and verify they do not return after driving through a complete drive cycle (typically 50-100 miles)
- Verify no fuel odor is present around the filler area
