This procedure covers the removal and replacement of a single fuel injector on a 2015 Kia Forte with a 1.8L I4 engine, including fuel system depressurization and fuel rail removal.

Warnings

⚠️Gasoline is extremely flammable. Ensure no open flames, sparks, or smoking in the work area. Have a fire extinguisher accessible.
⚠️Fuel system is under pressure. Failure to depressurize before disconnecting lines can cause fuel spray and serious injury.
Work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fuel vapors.
Clean the area around fuel connections thoroughly before disconnecting to prevent contamination of the fuel system.

Parts

  • Fuel injector × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Fuel injector O-ring kit × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Fuel line O-rings × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  2. Ensure engine is cool to the touch
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes
  4. Gather all tools and new parts including replacement O-rings
  5. Have shop towels and fuel catch container ready for fuel spillage

Procedure

  1. 1
    Depressurize fuel system
Remove the fuel pump relay (located in engine compartment fuse box) or fuel pump fuse. Attempt to start the engine and let it run until it stalls. Crank engine for 5 seconds after stalling to ensure system is depressurized. This prevents fuel spray when disconnecting fuel lines.
⚠️Skipping this step will result in pressurized fuel spraying when lines are disconnected.
  2. 2
    Remove engine cover
Remove the plastic engine cover by pulling upward on the cover to disengage the mounting grommets. If equipped with bolts or screws, remove them first. Set cover aside.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Disconnect electrical connectors
Press the release tab on each fuel injector electrical connector and carefully pull straight up to disconnect. If replacing a specific injector, you may only need to disconnect that one, but disconnecting all four provides better access. Mark connectors if needed for proper reassembly.
  4. 4
    Disconnect fuel supply line
Clean area around fuel supply line connection on fuel rail. Use appropriate fuel line disconnect tool to depress the retaining clips and disconnect the fuel supply line from the fuel rail. Place shop towels around connection to catch residual fuel. Plug the line with a clean rag to prevent contamination.
Even after depressurization, residual fuel will spill. Have towels and catch container ready.
  5. 5
    Remove fuel rail mounting bolts
Locate and remove the two fuel rail mounting bolts using a 10mm socket. These are typically located at each end of the fuel rail. Keep bolts in a safe place for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Fuel Rail Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove fuel rail assembly
Carefully pull the fuel rail straight upward with even pressure to disengage all four injectors from the intake manifold. The injectors will come out with the fuel rail as an assembly. Work slowly to avoid damaging injector tips or O-rings. Some resistance is normal as O-rings release from their seats.
Do not rock or twist the fuel rail excessively as this can damage injector tips or O-ring seats in the manifold.
  7. 7
    Remove defective injector
With fuel rail removed and placed on clean work surface, locate the metal retaining clip securing the injector to the fuel rail. Use a small flathead screwdriver or pliers to slide the clip off. Pull the injector straight out of the fuel rail. Note the orientation and position of O-rings for proper installation of replacement.
  8. 8
    Prepare new injector
Remove old O-rings from fuel rail seat if they remained in the rail. Lightly lubricate new O-rings with clean gasoline or petroleum jelly. Install new O-rings onto the replacement injector in the correct positions (one upper O-ring for fuel rail seal, one lower O-ring for manifold seal). Ensure O-rings are properly seated in their grooves.
ℹ️Never reuse old O-rings. Always install new O-rings with any injector replacement.
  9. 9
Install new injector to fuel rail
Insert the new injector into the fuel rail socket, ensuring it is fully seated. Install the metal retaining clip by sliding it into position until it clicks securely. Verify the clip is properly engaged on both sides and the injector cannot be pulled out.
  10. 10
    Reinstall fuel rail assembly
Carefully align all four injectors with their corresponding ports in the intake manifold. Press the fuel rail down evenly with firm, steady pressure until all injectors are fully seated in the manifold. The lower O-rings should compress and seal in the manifold bores.
  11. 11
    Install fuel rail mounting bolts
Install the two fuel rail mounting bolts finger-tight, then torque to specification using a torque wrench. Tighten bolts evenly in a cross pattern to ensure even seating of all injectors.
    Torque spec
    Fuel Rail Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reconnect fuel supply line
Install new O-rings on the fuel supply line fitting if provided in parts kit. Push the fuel supply line firmly into the fuel rail connection until it clicks into place. Gently tug on the line to verify it is locked in position.
ℹ️Always replace fuel line O-rings when disconnecting fuel fittings to prevent leaks.
    Torque spec
    Fuel Line Fittings25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
  13. 13
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Push each fuel injector electrical connector onto its corresponding injector until you hear and feel a positive click. Ensure connectors are fully seated and locking tabs are engaged.
  14. 14
Reinstall engine cover and restore power
Reinstall the engine cover by aligning grommets or installing fasteners and tightening to specification if equipped with screws. Reinstall the fuel pump relay or fuse. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully engaged with audible clicks
  2. Verify fuel rail mounting bolts are torqued to specification
  3. Confirm fuel supply line is locked into position on fuel rail
  4. Double-check that all tools and shop towels are removed from engine bay

Verification

  • Turn ignition key to ON position (do not start) for 2 seconds, then OFF. Repeat 3 times to prime fuel system and build pressure
  • Inspect all fuel connections for leaks while system is pressurized
  • Start engine and let idle for 2 minutes, monitoring for fuel leaks around injectors and fuel rail
  • Check for smooth idle and no fuel smell in engine compartment
  • Scan for diagnostic trouble codes to ensure no new codes are present
  • Test drive vehicle to confirm proper engine performance and no misfires
