This procedure involves removing the dashboard and HVAC housing to replace a failed heater core in a 2015 Kia Forte with 1.8L engine.

Warnings

⚠️Allow engine to cool completely before starting work. Coolant system operates under pressure and can cause severe burns.
Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require window auto-up/down recalibration.
Take detailed photos during disassembly. Dashboard removal involves many connectors and fasteners that must be reinstalled correctly.
ℹ️This procedure requires complete dashboard removal. Work in a clean, well-lit area with adequate space.

Parts

  • Heater core × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Heater core inlet/outlet O-rings × 2 — Usually included with heater core
  • Dashboard clips and fasteners assortment × 1 — OEM replacement clips
  • Coolant × 1 — Hyundai/Kia Long Life Green

Fluids

  • Hyundai/Kia Long Life Coolant (Green) — 7.5 qt

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
  2. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 3 minutes for airbag system to discharge
  4. Place fender covers to protect paint during work
  5. Remove driver and passenger floor mats and cover seats with protective material
  6. Photograph dashboard and center console from multiple angles for reference

Procedure

  1. 1
    Drain cooling system
Place drain pan under radiator. Open radiator drain valve at bottom of radiator and remove radiator cap slowly to vent system. Drain coolant completely. In engine bay, locate heater hoses at firewall (driver side) and carefully release hose clamps, then disconnect both heater hoses from heater core pipes. Plug hoses and pipes to minimize spillage.
Coolant is toxic to pets and children. Dispose of old coolant according to local regulations.
  2. 2
Remove center console and lower panels
Remove center console starting with shift knob (automatic: pry up trim ring). Remove console side covers, then rear console mounting screws. Disconnect all electrical connectors (USB, 12V, etc.). Remove console by lifting rearward then up. Remove lower dashboard panels on both driver and passenger sides by releasing clips and removing retaining screws. Disconnect hood release cable on driver side.

  3. 3
Remove steering column covers and instrument cluster
Remove upper and lower steering column covers by releasing clips and removing screws. Tilt steering wheel to lowest position. Remove instrument cluster bezel by releasing clips. Remove instrument cluster mounting screws, pull cluster forward, and disconnect all electrical connectors behind cluster. Set cluster aside in safe location.

    Dashboard Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
  4. 4
Disconnect dashboard electrical and climate controls
Disconnect main wiring harness connectors behind center stack. Label each connector with tape for reassembly reference. Remove climate control head unit by removing mounting screws and disconnecting electrical connectors and cable connections. Remove audio head unit following same process. Remove all remaining switch panels and disconnect associated wiring.
ℹ️Take photos of every connector location before disconnecting. Some connectors are similar and must be reinstalled in correct positions.

  5. 5
    Remove dashboard mounting fasteners
Locate and remove all dashboard mounting bolts: two at each A-pillar (behind trim covers), two at center support bracket, two at passenger side, and multiple screws along top dashboard edge. Remove side panel end caps at both doors to access side mounting points. Keep all fasteners organized by location.

    Remove complete dashboard assembly
With assistant supporting passenger side, carefully verify all connectors and fasteners are removed. Lift dashboard assembly slightly and check for any remaining connections. Slowly pull dashboard rearward to disengage from firewall, then lift up and remove from vehicle. Place on padded surface to prevent damage.
Dashboard is bulky and heavy. Two people are required to safely remove without damage. Avoid striking windshield or A-pillars.
  7. 7
Remove HVAC unit mounting and ducts
With dashboard removed, locate HVAC housing unit. Disconnect all remaining electrical connectors (blower motor, actuators, sensors). Remove ductwork connections from housing. Remove HVAC housing mounting bolts securing unit to firewall and support brackets.

    Housing Bolts13 Nm (10 lb-ft)
  8. 8
Separate HVAC housing and access heater core
Remove housing cover screws to split HVAC case halves. Carefully separate housing (note location of blend door and mode door actuators). Locate heater core inside housing, secured with mounting bracket. Remove heater core mounting fasteners and carefully extract heater core from housing. Note orientation and position of foam seals.
ℹ️Residual coolant will drain from old heater core. Have towels ready to catch spillage.

    Install new heater core
Inspect HVAC housing for debris and clean if necessary. Install new O-rings on heater core inlet/outlet pipes (lubricate lightly with coolant). Position new heater core into housing in exact orientation as original, ensuring foam seals are properly positioned. Install heater core mounting fasteners and torque to specification.

  10. 10
    Reassemble HVAC housing
Verify all blend doors and actuators are in correct position. Carefully join HVAC housing halves, ensuring no wires or components are pinched. Install housing cover screws and torque to specification. Reconnect all actuator and sensor electrical connectors.

  15. 15
    Bleed cooling system and test
Reconnect negative battery cable. Start engine and set heater to maximum temperature and fan speed. Allow engine to reach operating temperature while monitoring coolant level. Add coolant as needed. Check for leaks at heater core connections. Squeeze upper radiator hose to help purge air. Once engine reaches full operating temperature and thermostat opens, verify hot air from vents. Turn off engine, allow to cool, and recheck coolant level. Top off as necessary and install radiator cap.
Do not remove radiator cap when engine is hot. Monitor temperature gauge to prevent overheating during bleeding process.

Reassembly

  1. Torque all fasteners to specifications in reverse order of removal
  2. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated with locking tabs engaged
  3. Verify no tools or parts are left in dashboard area before final assembly
  4. Test all dashboard functions including HVAC controls, instrument cluster, switches, and accessory outlets

Verification

  • Start engine and verify no coolant leaks at heater core connections in engine bay or inside vehicle
  • Confirm hot air flows from all vents when heater is set to maximum temperature
  • Check coolant level after vehicle reaches operating temperature and top off if needed
  • Verify no warning lights on instrument cluster
  • Test all HVAC modes (defrost, floor, dash vents) and temperature settings for proper operation
  • Check carpet and floor mats for any coolant wetness over next few days
  • Recalibrate window auto-up/down if necessary by rolling each window fully down, then fully up and holding switch for 2 seconds
