This procedure covers the removal and replacement of a failed HID ballast on a 2015 Kia Forte with factory HID headlights, typically required when one headlight fails to illuminate or flickers.
Warnings
⚠️HID systems operate at extremely high voltage (up to 25,000V during startup). Always disconnect the battery before working on HID components and wait at least 5 minutes for capacitor discharge.
⚠Never touch HID bulbs with bare hands. Oils from skin can cause hot spots and premature bulb failure.
⚠Do not look directly at illuminated HID bulbs as the intense light can damage eyesight.
ℹ️Ballasts are side-specific (left/right). Verify you have the correct replacement part before beginning work.

Parts
- HID ballast (specify left or right side) × 1 — Use OEM specification - Kia 92151-XXX00 series
- Dielectric grease (small packet) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn off ignition and remove key
- Allow engine compartment to cool if vehicle was recently running
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Identify which side (driver or passenger) has the failed ballast
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 5 minutes for HID system capacitor discharge
Procedure
- 1Access the headlight assemblyRemove the plastic engine cover by pulling upward on the front clips, then lifting away from engine. On the affected side, locate the HID ballast mounted behind the headlight assembly near the inner fender. You may need to move aside any wiring harnesses or hoses for better access.
- 2Disconnect ballast electrical connectorLocate the main electrical connector on the HID ballast. Press down on the locking tab while pulling the connector straight out from the ballast. Some connectors have a secondary safety clip that must be lifted before the main tab will release. Do not pull on wires.
- 3Disconnect HID bulb connectorLocate the high-voltage output connector that runs from the ballast to the HID bulb. This connector typically has a twist-lock or push-tab design. Release the locking mechanism and carefully disconnect. The connector may be stiff due to weather sealing.⚠High voltage connector - ensure battery has been disconnected for at least 5 minutes before touching.
- 4Remove ballast mounting boltsThe ballast is secured to the headlight bracket or body with typically 2-3 mounting bolts. Use an 8mm socket to remove these bolts. Note the orientation and position of the ballast for installation of the replacement unit. Some models have a metal mounting bracket that remains attached to the vehicle.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 5Remove failed ballastCarefully pull the ballast away from its mounting location. Thread any wiring through clips or holders as you remove the unit. Inspect the mounting area for any corrosion, water intrusion, or damage that may have contributed to ballast failure.
- 6Prepare new ballastRemove the new ballast from packaging. Verify it matches the failed unit in appearance and connector configuration. Check that all connectors are clean and free of protective caps. Apply a thin coating of dielectric grease to the main power connector (not the HID bulb connector) to prevent corrosion.
- 7Install new ballastPosition the new ballast in the same orientation as the original. Route wiring through any clips or holders. Align the mounting holes with the bracket. Thread mounting bolts by hand first to ensure proper alignment, then torque to specification using an 8mm socket and torque wrench.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 8Connect HID bulb connectorConnect the high-voltage output connector to the HID bulb. Ensure the connector is fully seated and the locking mechanism engages with an audible click. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is secure. Do not over-tighten twist-lock style connectors.
- 9Connect main electrical connectorPlug the main electrical connector into the ballast. Press firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. If equipped with a secondary safety clip, ensure it is properly engaged. Verify connector is fully seated by visual inspection.
- 10Reconnect battery and testReconnect the negative battery terminal and torque to specification. Turn the ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Turn on headlights and verify the repaired HID bulb illuminates. HID bulbs may take 5-10 seconds to reach full brightness and may appear to flicker during warm-up. Check for proper color temperature and brightness compared to the opposite side.⚠Do not look directly at HID bulbs when testing. Use a wall or garage door to observe light output.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Secure all wiring harnesses and hoses to their original positions using clips
- Reinstall the plastic engine cover by aligning rear tabs first, then pressing down firmly on front clips until they snap into place
- Verify no tools or parts were left in the engine compartment
- Close hood and verify headlight operation one final time with engine running
Verification
- With engine running, turn headlights on and verify both HID bulbs illuminate within 10 seconds
- Check that both headlights reach the same color temperature (typically 4300K-6000K depending on OEM specification)
- Verify both high and low beam functions operate correctly
- Test headlights after vehicle has been driven for 15-20 minutes to ensure ballast does not fail when fully warmed up
- Inspect for any error messages or warning lights on instrument cluster related to headlight system
- Visually inspect the repair area for any loose connectors or improperly routed wiring
