Parts

  • Horn assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 3 minutes for any stored electrical charge to dissipate
  4. Allow engine to cool if recently driven

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access the horn assembly
From underneath the front of the vehicle on the driver's side, locate the horn assembly mounted on the radiator support or frame rail behind the bumper. The horn is typically positioned near the headlight assembly. You may need to turn the steering wheel fully to one side for better access.
  2. 2
    Disconnect the horn electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the horn electrical connector and pull the connector straight off the horn terminal. Inspect the connector for corrosion or damage. If testing the existing horn, note that one terminal receives 12V power when the horn button is pressed, and the other is a ground connection.
  3. 3
    Remove the horn mounting bolt
Using a 10mm socket, remove the single bolt securing the horn to the mounting bracket. Support the horn with one hand while removing the bolt to prevent it from falling. Note the orientation of the horn and any spacers or insulators for reinstallation.

  4. 4
    Remove the horn assembly
Carefully remove the horn from the mounting bracket. Inspect the mounting bracket for damage or corrosion. If the bracket shows significant corrosion, clean it with a wire brush before installing the new horn.
  5. 5
    Test the old horn (optional)
If diagnosing a horn issue, reconnect the battery and test the old horn by applying 12V directly to the power terminal and grounding the ground terminal using jumper wires. If the horn sounds, the issue is likely in the wiring or horn button circuit. If no sound, the horn is faulty. Disconnect battery again before proceeding.
  6. 6
Install the new or cleaned horn
Position the new or serviced horn onto the mounting bracket, ensuring any rubber insulators or spacers are properly aligned. Thread the mounting bolt by hand to prevent cross-threading. Ensure the horn terminals are oriented for easy connector access.
  7. 7
    Torque the horn mounting bolt
Using a torque wrench, tighten the horn mounting bolt to specification. Do not overtighten as this can crack the horn housing or damage the mounting bracket. Verify the horn is securely mounted and does not move when pressure is applied.

  8. 8
    Reconnect the electrical connector
Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the horn terminals if desired to prevent corrosion. Push the electrical connector firmly onto the horn terminals until the locking tab clicks into place. Verify the connection is secure by gently pulling on the connector.
  9. 9
    Reconnect the battery
Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal. Ensure the connection is clean and tight.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connections are secure and properly locked
  2. Verify the horn is firmly mounted and all fasteners are torqued to specification
  3. Check that no tools or parts were left in the engine compartment

Verification

  • Press the horn button on the steering wheel to verify the horn sounds properly
  • Test the horn multiple times to ensure consistent operation
  • Listen for any abnormal buzzing, rattling, or weak sound that might indicate a poor ground connection
  • If horn does not sound, verify electrical connections and check fuses before further diagnosis
