This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the muffler assembly on a 2015 Kia Forte 1.8L I4, including disconnection from the exhaust system and replacement of hangers and clamps.
Warnings
⚠️Allow exhaust system to cool completely before beginning work. Exhaust components can remain extremely hot for over an hour after engine shutdown and cause severe burns.
⚠Exhaust components may be corroded and break during removal. Inspect all fasteners and have replacement hardware available.
⚠Work on a level, stable surface with the vehicle properly supported on jack stands. Never rely solely on a floor jack.

Parts
- Muffler assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification or equivalent
- Exhaust flange gasket × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Rubber exhaust hangers (if damaged) × 2 — Use OEM specification
- Muffler clamp (if reusing is not possible) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Ensure engine and exhaust system are completely cool to the touch
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Raise rear of vehicle using floor jack and support securely on jack stands at manufacturer-designated points
- Spray all exhaust fasteners, clamps, and hanger bolts with penetrating oil and allow to soak for 10-15 minutes
- Inspect exhaust system from rear to catalytic converter to identify all connection points
Procedure
- 1Disconnect muffler clamp from resonator pipeLocate the muffler clamp connecting the muffler inlet to the resonator outlet pipe. Using a 14mm socket, loosen and remove the clamp bolt(s). Carefully slide the clamp back away from the joint. Do not force separation yet; simply loosen the connection.Torque specMuffler Clamps55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
- 2Remove rear exhaust hangersLocate the two rubber exhaust hangers supporting the muffler assembly. Using a pry bar or exhaust hanger removal tool, carefully pry the hanger loops from the rubber isolators attached to the vehicle body. Work slowly to avoid tearing the rubber. If hangers are severely degraded or torn, mark for replacement.
- 3Remove hanger bracket bolts (if equipped)If your muffler has metal hanger brackets bolted to the body, locate and remove the hanger bracket bolts using a 12mm socket. There may be 2-4 bolts depending on configuration. Support the muffler weight by hand or with a jack stand as you remove the final bolts.⚠Support muffler weight before removing final hanger bracket bolt to prevent the assembly from falling.Torque specHanger Bracket Bolts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 4Separate muffler from resonator pipeWith all hangers and clamps removed, gently twist and pull the muffler rearward to separate it from the resonator pipe slip joint. If the joint is seized, apply additional penetrating oil and allow to soak, then use a twisting motion while pulling. Avoid excessive force that could damage the resonator pipe.
- 5Remove old muffler and inspect connectionsLower the muffler assembly from the vehicle. Inspect the resonator outlet pipe for damage, excessive corrosion, or deformation. Clean the resonator pipe connection surface with a wire brush to remove rust and old gasket material. Inspect all rubber hangers for cracks or tears and replace if necessary.
- 6Prepare new muffler for installationUnpack the new muffler and verify it matches the original configuration. Check that all hanger loops are properly formed. If the muffler has a flange connection (rather than slip joint), apply anti-seize compound to flange bolts. If using a slip joint, apply a thin layer of anti-seize to the inside of the muffler inlet pipe.
- 7Install new muffler onto resonator pipeLift the new muffler into position and slide the inlet pipe over the resonator outlet pipe. Ensure a minimum 2-inch overlap at the slip joint. Align the muffler so hanger loops are positioned near their mounting points. Do not fully tighten any connections yet.
- 8Attach exhaust hangersInstall new or reuse existing rubber exhaust hangers by inserting the muffler hanger loops into the rubber isolators. Use a pry bar or hanger tool to stretch the rubber over the metal loops. Ensure hangers are fully seated and supporting the muffler weight evenly.
- 9Install and align muffler clampPosition the muffler clamp over the slip joint between the resonator and muffler. Center the clamp over the joint with equal overlap on both pipes. Before tightening, verify the muffler is aligned properly with adequate clearance from the rear bumper, fuel tank, and suspension components (minimum 1 inch clearance all around).
- 10Torque muffler clampUsing a torque wrench and 14mm socket, tighten the muffler clamp bolt to the specified torque of 55 Nm (41 lb-ft). Ensure the clamp does not rotate during tightening and remains centered on the joint.Torque specMuffler Clamps55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
- 11Install hanger bracket bolts (if equipped)If your muffler uses bolted hanger brackets, align the brackets to the body mounting points and install the hanger bracket bolts. Torque to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) using a torque wrench and 12mm socket.Torque specHanger Bracket Bolts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 12Final alignment checkVisually inspect the entire muffler assembly. Verify all connections are tight, hangers are properly seated, and the muffler has adequate clearance from all surrounding components. Gently push and pull on the muffler to ensure it moves slightly on the hangers but returns to center position without binding.
Reassembly
- Lower vehicle from jack stands carefully
- Start engine and allow to idle for 2-3 minutes while listening for exhaust leaks
- Check all connections for leaks using soapy water if needed
- After initial test drive, re-check all clamp and hanger torques when exhaust has cooled
Verification
- Start engine and listen for exhaust leaks at all connection points - there should be no hissing or abnormal sounds
- Verify muffler does not contact body, bumper, suspension, or fuel system components during idle
- Test drive vehicle and listen for rattles, vibrations, or exhaust leaks under acceleration and deceleration
- Visually inspect muffler positioning from rear of vehicle - it should be centered and level
- After 50-100 miles of driving, re-inspect all connections and verify clamp remains tight
