Parts
- Neutral safety switch (inhibitor switch) × 1 — Use OEM specification
- O-ring seal × 1 — Usually included with switch
Fluids
- Kia SP-IV-M ATF — 1 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake
- Chock rear wheels securely
- Raise and support front of vehicle on jack stands
- Remove driver side front wheel for improved access
- Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent accidental starting
- Allow transmission to cool if recently driven
Procedure
- 1Access the neutral safety switchFrom underneath the vehicle, locate the neutral safety switch on the left side of the transmission case, near where the shift cable connects. It will have an electrical connector and is secured by two bolts. Remove any heat shields or splash guards if necessary to access the switch area.
- 2Disconnect electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the neutral safety switch electrical connector and carefully pull it straight off the switch. Be gentle to avoid breaking the connector tabs. Clean any dirt or debris from around the switch area.
- 3Position drain panPlace a drain pan directly beneath the neutral safety switch. Expect approximately 0.5 to 1 quart of ATF to drain when the switch is removed. Have shop towels ready to catch any fluid that may spray initially.
- 4Remove switch mounting boltsUsing a 10mm socket, remove the two bolts securing the neutral safety switch to the transmission case. Keep track of any washers or seals. Once bolts are removed, carefully pull the switch straight out from the transmission housing.Torque specMounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 5Allow fluid to drainAllow transmission fluid to drain completely from the switch opening into the drain pan. This may take 1-2 minutes. Clean the mounting surface on the transmission case with a shop towel, removing any old gasket material or debris.
- 6Inspect and prepare new switchVerify the new neutral safety switch matches the old unit in connector type and mounting pattern. Install the new O-ring seal onto the switch body if not pre-installed. Lightly lubricate the O-ring with clean ATF to ensure proper seating.
- 7Install new neutral safety switchAlign the switch with the manual control shaft inside the transmission. The switch will only fit in one orientation. Insert the switch straight into the transmission case, ensuring the O-ring seats properly in the bore. Do not rotate the switch during installation.
- 8Install and torque mounting boltsInstall the two switch mounting bolts and tighten them evenly in a cross pattern. Use a torque wrench to tighten to specification. Do not over-torque as this can damage the switch housing or transmission case.Torque specMounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector firmly onto the switch until you hear or feel a positive click, indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is secured.
- 10Refill transmission fluidCheck transmission fluid level using the dipstick with engine off. Add Kia SP-IV-M ATF as needed to replace fluid lost during switch replacement, typically 0.5 to 1 quart. Do not overfill.
- 11Reinstall removed componentsReinstall any heat shields, splash guards, and the driver side front wheel. Torque wheel lug nuts to specification. Lower vehicle from jack stands and reconnect negative battery cable.
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connections are secure and properly locked
- Verify no tools or parts were left in the engine bay or under the vehicle
- Dispose of used ATF properly according to local regulations
Verification
- With engine off and foot off brake, verify vehicle will only start in Park and Neutral positions
- Attempt to start in Drive and Reverse - starter should not engage
- Start engine in Park, then shift through all gears with foot on brake, feeling for smooth engagement
- Verify reverse lights illuminate when shifted into Reverse
- Check for any ATF leaks around the switch after test drive
- Road test vehicle to confirm normal transmission operation and no warning lights
