Parts
- Oil level sensor × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Oil level sensor O-ring or seal × 1 — Usually included with sensor
Fluids
- Kia Genuine 5W-20 — 0.5 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Allow engine to cool completely if recently operated
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes
- Raise front of vehicle and secure on jack stands
- Remove engine splash shield or undertray if equipped to access oil pan area
Procedure
- 1Locate the oil level sensorThe oil level sensor is mounted on the passenger side of the oil pan, near the bottom. It has a single electrical connector attached. Position the drain pan beneath the sensor location as some oil will spill during removal.
- 2Disconnect electrical connectorPress the release tab on the oil level sensor electrical connector and carefully pull the connector away from the sensor. Ensure the connector is moved out of the way to prevent oil contamination.
- 3Remove oil level sensorUsing a 10mm socket, loosen and remove the oil level sensor from the oil pan. Turn counterclockwise to remove. Be prepared for oil to drain from the opening once the sensor is removed. Allow oil to drain into the pan.⚠Approximately 0.25-0.5 quarts of oil may drain from the sensor opening.
- 4Clean sensor mounting areaWipe the oil pan surface around the sensor hole with a clean shop towel. Use a wire brush if necessary to remove any debris or old gasket material from the mounting surface. Ensure the area is clean and dry for proper seal.
- 5Inspect new sensorVerify the new oil level sensor has the O-ring or seal properly installed in the groove. Apply a light coating of clean engine oil to the O-ring to aid installation and prevent damage.
- 6Install new oil level sensorThread the new oil level sensor into the oil pan by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Once hand-tight, use a torque wrench and 10mm socket to tighten the sensor to specification. Do not overtighten as this may damage the sensor or oil pan threads.Torque specOil Level Sensor15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 7Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector firmly onto the new oil level sensor until it clicks into place. Verify the connector is fully seated and the locking tab is engaged.
- 8Check and top off engine oilLower the vehicle temporarily to level ground. Check the engine oil level using the dipstick. Add Kia Genuine 5W-20 oil as needed to bring the level to the full mark, compensating for oil lost during sensor replacement.
- 9Reinstall undertray and lower vehicleReinstall the engine splash shield or undertray if removed. Torque fasteners to specification if applicable. Carefully lower the vehicle from jack stands.
- 10Reconnect battery and clear codesReconnect the negative battery terminal. Start the engine and verify the oil level warning light behaves normally (illuminates briefly at startup then extinguishes). Use a scan tool to clear any stored fault codes if necessary.
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connections are secure and fully seated
- Verify engine splash shield is properly reinstalled
- Double-check engine oil level after initial startup
- Dispose of drained oil properly at a recycling facility
Verification
- Start engine and verify oil level warning light extinguishes within 3-5 seconds
- Check for oil leaks around the sensor mounting area with engine running
- Allow engine to reach operating temperature and recheck for leaks
- Use a scan tool to verify oil level sensor is reading correctly and no fault codes are present
- Test drive vehicle and confirm no oil level warning lights illuminate during normal operation
