This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the power steering pump on a 2015 Kia Forte with the 1.8L I4 engine, including serpentine belt removal, fluid lines, and system bleeding.
Warnings
⚠Power steering fluid is flammable. Keep away from hot engine components and open flames.
⚠System may contain residual pressure even when engine is off. Place rags around fittings when loosening.
ℹ️Do not turn steering wheel with pump removed or lines disconnected, as this can damage the steering rack.
⚠Spilled power steering fluid can damage paint and is slippery. Clean spills immediately.

Parts
- Power steering pump × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Power steering pressure line O-ring × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Power steering return line O-ring × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Serpentine belt (if worn or contaminated) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Fluids
- Kia PSF-4 — 1 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake.
- Allow engine to cool completely if recently operated.
- Raise and support front of vehicle on jack stands if needed for access (optional depending on approach).
- Place drain pan under power steering pump area.
- Remove engine splash shield if equipped for better access.
- Extract as much power steering fluid as possible from reservoir using turkey baster or extraction pump to minimize spillage.
Procedure
- 1Remove serpentine beltLocate the serpentine belt tensioner on the right side of the engine. Using a 14mm wrench or serpentine belt tool, rotate the tensioner clockwise to release tension. Slip the belt off the power steering pump pulley first, then release tensioner and remove belt completely. Inspect belt for contamination or wear; replace if necessary.
- 2Disconnect power steering pressure lineLocate the high-pressure line fitting on the rear of the pump (steel line with threaded fitting). Place rags around the fitting to catch fluid. Using a line wrench, loosen and remove the pressure line fitting. Allow fluid to drain into pan. Cap or plug the line to prevent contamination. Discard the old O-ring from the fitting.⚠Expect fluid spillage. Keep rags ready and drain pan positioned underneath.
- 3Disconnect power steering return lineLocate the return line (rubber hose) connected to the pump, typically on the side or bottom. Loosen the hose clamp using pliers or appropriate tool. Twist and pull the hose off the pump fitting. Allow remaining fluid to drain. Remove and discard the old O-ring if present at connection point.
- 4Remove pump mounting boltsIdentify the power steering pump mounting bolts (typically 2-3 bolts securing pump to engine block or bracket). Remove all mounting bolts using appropriate socket. Support the pump while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling.ℹ️Pump may still contain residual fluid. Keep drain pan positioned and handle carefully to avoid spills.
- 5Remove power steering pumpCarefully maneuver the pump out of the engine bay. You may need to rotate or tilt the pump to clear surrounding components. If pulley interferes with removal and must be transferred to new pump, use pulley holder tool to prevent shaft rotation while removing pulley nut. Drain any remaining fluid from old pump into drain pan.
- 6Prepare new power steering pumpRemove new pump from packaging and inspect for shipping plugs or caps. If pulley needs to be transferred from old pump, install it onto new pump shaft and secure properly. Verify new pump rotates freely by hand. Check that all ports are clean and free of debris.
- 7Install new power steering pumpPosition the new pump into the mounting location, aligning bolt holes with engine block or bracket. Thread in all mounting bolts by hand first to ensure proper alignment. Tighten pump mounting bolts to specification in a cross-pattern if multiple bolts are used.Torque specPump Mounting Bolts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 8Reconnect power steering return lineInstall new O-ring onto the pump return fitting if applicable (lubricate lightly with fresh PSF-4 fluid). Slide the return hose onto the pump fitting, ensuring it is fully seated. Position and tighten the hose clamp to specification.Torque specReturn Line Clamp4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect power steering pressure lineInstall new O-ring onto the pressure line fitting (lubricate lightly with fresh PSF-4 fluid). Thread the pressure line fitting into the pump by hand to avoid cross-threading. Using a line wrench, tighten the pressure line fitting to specification.⚠Do not over-tighten. Excessive torque can damage the pump housing or fitting threads.Torque specPressure Line Fitting30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- 10Install serpentine beltRoute the serpentine belt around all pulleys according to the belt routing diagram (typically found on a decal under the hood or in owner's manual). Rotate the tensioner clockwise with wrench or belt tool, slip the belt onto the final pulley (typically tensioner pulley), then slowly release tensioner. Verify belt is properly seated in all pulley grooves.
- 11Fill and bleed power steering systemFill power steering reservoir with Kia PSF-4 fluid to the MAX or COLD mark. With engine OFF, turn steering wheel slowly from lock to lock 5-6 times to purge air from system. Check fluid level and add as needed. Start engine and let idle. Turn steering wheel lock to lock slowly 2-3 times while engine runs. Check for leaks at all connections. Turn off engine, recheck fluid level, and top off to proper mark. Repeat process if fluid is foamy or air bubbles are visible.⚠Do not hold steering wheel at full lock for more than 5 seconds while bleeding, as this can overheat the fluid and damage the pump.
Reassembly
- Reinstall engine splash shield if removed.
- Lower vehicle from jack stands if raised.
- Clean any spilled power steering fluid from engine bay and undercarriage.
- Double-check all connection points for proper torque and evidence of leaks.
Verification
- Start engine and verify no leaks at pressure line, return line, or pump body.
- Turn steering wheel lock to lock while observing reservoir - fluid level should remain stable without excessive foaming.
- Listen for unusual pump noises (whining or groaning may indicate air in system or low fluid).
- Test drive vehicle and verify power steering assist is functioning normally in both directions.
- Recheck fluid level after test drive when engine is warm; top off if necessary to HOT mark.
- Inspect all fittings and hose connections for any signs of seepage after 24 hours of operation.
