This procedure covers draining, flushing, and refilling the power steering fluid system on a 2015 Kia Forte with 1.8L I4 engine to maintain proper steering operation and prevent pump wear.

Warnings

Do not run the engine with low or empty power steering fluid reservoir as this will damage the pump.
Power steering fluid is slippery and can damage paint. Clean spills immediately.
ℹ️Use only Kia PSF-4 power steering fluid. Incorrect fluid can cause seal damage and pump failure.

Parts

  • Power steering fluid filter (if equipped) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Fluids

  • Kia PSF-4 — 1.5 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Engine should be cold or warm, not hot
  3. Locate power steering fluid reservoir on driver's side of engine bay
  4. Place protective covering over fender and engine components to prevent fluid damage

Procedure

  1. 1
    Raise front of vehicle
Lift the front of the vehicle using a jack and secure it on jack stands to allow the front wheels to turn freely. Ensure the vehicle is stable before proceeding.
  2. 2
    Remove old fluid from reservoir
Open the power steering reservoir cap. Use a turkey baster or fluid transfer pump to extract as much old fluid as possible from the reservoir. Transfer the old fluid to the drain pan. Continue until the reservoir is as empty as possible.
  3. 3
    Fill reservoir with fresh fluid
Using a funnel, fill the power steering reservoir to the MAX or COLD mark with fresh Kia PSF-4 fluid. Do not overfill.
  4. 4
    Cycle steering to circulate fluid
Without starting the engine, turn the steering wheel fully to the left and hold for 2-3 seconds, then turn fully to the right and hold for 2-3 seconds. Repeat this process 5-10 times. Check the fluid level frequently and add fluid as needed to keep the reservoir at the MAX mark.
Do not hold the steering wheel at full lock for more than 3 seconds to avoid damaging the pump.
  5. 5
    Start engine and continue flushing
Start the engine and allow it to idle. Turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock 3-4 times. Do not hold at full lock. Check the fluid level and add fluid as necessary. The fluid level will drop as the system circulates and purges air.
Monitor the reservoir closely and do not let it run dry during this process.
  6. 6
Check for air bubbles and proper level
With the engine running at idle, observe the fluid in the reservoir. If bubbles are present, continue turning the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock until bubbles stop appearing. Turn off the engine and check that the fluid level is at the COLD mark. Add fluid if necessary.
  7. 7
    Lower vehicle and final check
Lower the vehicle from jack stands to the ground. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock one final time. Check for leaks around the pump, pressure line fittings, and steering rack. Verify fluid level is at the COLD mark when cold, or HOT mark when at operating temperature.
    Torque spec
    Pressure Line Fitting32 Nm (24 lb-ft)
    Wheel Lug Nuts140 Nm (103 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure reservoir cap is securely installed
  2. Clean any spilled fluid from engine bay and chassis components
  3. Verify all connections are tight and no leaks are present

Verification

  • Start engine and verify smooth steering operation with no noise or binding
  • Check that fluid level remains stable at appropriate mark (COLD when cold, HOT when at operating temperature)
  • Confirm no leaks are present around pump, hoses, or rack after test drive
  • Verify steering returns to center smoothly and no air bubbles appear in reservoir
  • Recheck fluid level after 24 hours of normal driving
