This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the radiator pressure cap on a 2015 Kia Forte with 1.8L I4 engine.

Warnings

⚠️Never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Pressurized coolant can cause severe burns. Allow engine to cool completely for at least 2 hours.
Only perform this procedure when the engine is completely cold to the touch.

Tools required

Shop towel or ragEssential

Parts

  • Radiator pressure cap × 1 — Use OEM specification (1.1 bar / 16 PSI)

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine has been off for at least 2 hours and is completely cold
  2. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  3. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  4. Locate radiator cap on top of radiator assembly at front of engine bay

Procedure

  1. 1
    Verify Engine Temperature
Touch the radiator and upper radiator hose to confirm they are completely cool. If any warmth is detected, wait longer before proceeding.
  2. 2
    Remove Old Radiator Cap
Place a shop towel over the radiator cap. Press down firmly on the cap while turning counterclockwise to the first stop. Allow any residual pressure to release (you should hear a hissing sound if any pressure remains). Once pressure is fully released, press down again and continue turning counterclockwise to remove the cap completely.
  3. 3
    Inspect Cap and Radiator Neck
Examine the old cap's rubber seals for cracks, hardening, or deterioration. Inspect the radiator filler neck for debris, corrosion, or damage to the sealing surface. Clean the filler neck with a shop towel if any debris is present.
  4. 4
    Install New Radiator Cap
Align the new radiator cap with the filler neck tabs. Press down firmly and turn clockwise until you feel the cap engage and lock into place. The cap should turn approximately 90 degrees and stop with a firm click.

Reassembly

  1. No reassembly required for this procedure

Verification

  • Visually confirm the radiator cap is fully seated and locked in position
  • Gently attempt to lift the cap without turning - it should not move if properly installed
  • Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature, then check for coolant leaks around the radiator cap
  • After engine cools, verify coolant level is at the FULL COLD mark on the coolant reservoir
