Parts
- Replacement radio/head unit × 1 — Use OEM specification or compatible aftermarket unit
- Radio wiring harness adapter (if using aftermarket unit) × 1 — Kia to aftermarket adapter harness
- Radio antenna adapter (if needed) × 1 — Kia to aftermarket antenna adapter
- Radio trim panel clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Open driver's door to prevent lockout
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for airbag system to discharge
- Gather all tools and new radio unit before beginning work
Procedure
- 1Disconnect negative battery terminalUsing a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt. Remove the negative cable from the battery post and secure it away from the battery to prevent accidental reconnection during the procedure.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Remove climate control panel trimUsing plastic pry tools, carefully release the lower edge of the center console trim panel surrounding the climate controls and radio. Start at the bottom near the gear selector and work upward. There are approximately 8-10 clips holding this panel. Pull gently outward once clips are released.
- 3Disconnect climate control connectorsReach behind the climate control panel and locate the electrical connectors for the climate control module and hazard switch. Press the locking tabs and disconnect both connectors. Set the trim panel aside in a safe location to avoid scratching.
- 4Remove radio mounting boltsLocate the four mounting bolts securing the radio unit to the dash frame (two on each side). Using a 10mm socket or Phillips screwdriver (depending on fastener type), remove all four bolts. Keep these bolts organized as they will be reused for installation.
- 5Pull radio unit from dashCarefully pull the radio unit forward from the dash cavity approximately 4-6 inches to access the rear connectors. Support the unit with one hand while accessing the connections. Do not pull too far or you may strain the connected cables.
- 6Disconnect antenna cableLocate the antenna cable connector on the rear of the radio unit (typically a black coaxial connector). Grip the connector firmly and pull straight back to disconnect. Do not pull on the cable itself, only the connector body.
- 7Disconnect main wiring harnessLocate the main wiring harness connector(s) on the rear of the radio unit (usually one or two multi-pin connectors). Press down on the locking tab while pulling the connector straight back to disconnect. Some models may have a secondary connector for steering wheel controls or USB/AUX inputs.
- 8Remove factory radio unitWith all connections disconnected, fully remove the factory radio unit from the dash. Inspect all connectors and the dash cavity for any damage or loose components before proceeding with installation.
- 9Prepare new radio unitIf installing an aftermarket unit, attach the wiring harness adapter and antenna adapter to the new radio according to adapter manufacturer instructions. If installing OEM replacement, verify all mounting brackets are properly attached to the new unit. Test fit the unit in the dash opening to ensure proper fitment.
- 10Connect wiring to new radioConnect the main wiring harness connector(s) to the new radio unit until you hear or feel a positive click. Ensure the locking tab engages properly. Connect the antenna cable by pushing firmly until seated. Verify all connections are secure before proceeding.
- 11Test radio function before final installationReconnect the negative battery terminal temporarily and turn the ignition to ACC or ON position. Power on the radio and verify basic functionality including power, display, speakers, and AM/FM reception. Check steering wheel controls if equipped. If everything functions properly, turn off ignition and disconnect battery again for final installation.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 12Install and secure radio unitCarefully push the radio unit back into the dash cavity, ensuring no wires are pinched or trapped behind the unit. Align the mounting holes and install all four mounting bolts. Tighten bolts in a cross pattern to ensure even seating. Do not overtighten as this can crack the radio housing or strip threads.
- 13Reinstall climate control panel trimReconnect the electrical connectors to the climate control module and hazard switch. Align the trim panel with the dash opening and press firmly around all edges to engage the retaining clips. Start at the top and work downward. Verify all clips are fully seated and the panel sits flush with no gaps.
- 14Reconnect battery and finalize installationReconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten the terminal bolt to specification. Reset the clock and radio presets. Enter the radio anti-theft code if prompted. Test all radio functions including AM/FM, satellite radio (if equipped), Bluetooth, USB, and steering wheel controls.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all trim panels are fully seated with no gaps or misalignment
- Verify all electrical connectors are properly secured and locked
- Confirm no tools or fasteners were left in the dash cavity
- Test all related functions including climate controls, hazard lights, and radio operations
Verification
- Power on radio and verify display illuminates properly
- Test all audio sources: AM, FM, satellite (if equipped), Bluetooth, USB/AUX inputs
- Verify steering wheel controls operate radio functions correctly
- Check that all speakers produce sound with no distortion or intermittent operation
- Confirm climate controls operate normally and were not affected by the procedure
- Verify no warning lights or error messages appear on instrument cluster
- Test radio preset memory and clock to ensure battery connection is solid
