Replace the heating element in the driver or passenger seat by removing the seat cover, replacing the defective heating pad, and reinstalling the upholstery.

Warnings

Disconnect the battery negative terminal and wait 3 minutes before beginning work to prevent airbag deployment if equipped with side-impact airbags in seats.
Do not use sharp objects directly on seat foam or upholstery as this will cause permanent damage.
ℹ️Take photos during disassembly to reference hog ring and trim clip locations for reassembly.

Parts

  • Seat heater element pad × 1 — Use OEM specification for specific seat position
  • Hog rings (seat cover clips) × 20 — Generic automotive hog rings
  • Wire connectors (if damaged) × 2 — Insulated butt connectors 18-22 AWG

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake.
  2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 3 minutes for airbag system to discharge.
  3. Move seat to full forward position for easier access to rear mounting bolts.
  4. If testing before replacement, verify heater element failure with multimeter (should read 1-3 ohms between terminals; open circuit indicates failure).

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove seat from vehicle
Move seat to full forward position. Locate and remove the two rear seat mounting bolts. Move seat to full rearward position and remove the two front seat mounting bolts. Disconnect the electrical connector under the seat by pressing the release tab. Carefully lift and remove the seat from the vehicle.

  2. 2
Detach seat back from seat cushion
With seat removed from vehicle, locate the mounting bolts connecting the seat back to the seat cushion assembly. Remove these bolts and carefully separate the seat back from the cushion. Set the seat back aside. The heater element is located in the seat cushion (bottom) portion.

    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Remove seat cover hog rings
Turn the seat cushion upside down to access the underside. Locate all hog rings (metal clips) securing the seat cover to the seat frame around the perimeter. Using hog ring pliers, carefully compress and remove each hog ring. Count and note the number and positions of hog rings for reassembly. Work methodically around the entire perimeter.
  4. 4
    Disconnect heater element wiring
Locate the heater element wire connector passing through the seat foam. Disconnect the connector if accessible. Trace the wire path through the foam and note routing. If the wire is sewn or clipped to the cover, carefully release these attachment points without damaging the fabric.
  5. 5
Remove seat cover and access heater element
Carefully peel back the seat cover from the foam cushion, working slowly to avoid tearing fabric or damaging clips. The heater element is adhered or sandwiched between the foam and cover. Fully expose the defective heater element pad. Note the orientation and positioning of the element for proper installation of replacement.
  6. 6
    Remove old heater element
Carefully peel the old heater element away from the seat foam and/or seat cover. If adhesive is present, work slowly to avoid tearing the foam. Remove all remnants of old adhesive using a plastic scraper or your fingers. Clean the surface area where new element will be installed. Inspect seat foam for damage and repair if necessary.
  7. 7
    Install new heater element
Position the new heater element in the exact location as the original, ensuring proper orientation (connector location should match original routing). If element has adhesive backing, carefully remove protective liner and press element firmly onto seat foam. Ensure element lies flat with no wrinkles or bunching. Route the wire connector through the same path as original.
  8. 8
    Reinstall seat cover
Carefully stretch the seat cover back over the foam cushion, ensuring the heater element remains properly positioned and flat. Work the cover evenly from all sides to avoid misalignment. Route the heater wire through the appropriate opening in the foam. Ensure all original alignment points and features match up properly before securing.
  9. 9
Secure seat cover with hog rings
Using hog ring pliers, install new hog rings around the perimeter of the seat cover in the original locations. Work in a pattern to maintain even tension on the cover (opposite sides, then fill in between). Ensure cover is taut and wrinkle-free before securing all rings. Verify the heater element has not shifted during this process.
  10. 10
    Reconnect heater wiring
Connect the heater element wire connector. Ensure connection is secure and wires are routed properly without pinch points or tension. If any wire connections were cut or damaged, use proper wire connectors to splice and ensure good electrical contact. Secure wiring to seat frame using original clips or tie wraps.
  11. 11
    Reattach seat back to cushion
Align the seat back with the seat cushion assembly. Install mounting bolts and tighten to specification. Verify all mechanical adjustments (recline mechanism, etc.) function properly before reinstalling in vehicle.

  12. 12
    Reinstall seat in vehicle
Carefully position the seat assembly in the vehicle. Reconnect the electrical connector under the seat, ensuring it clicks securely. Move seat to full rearward position and install front mounting bolts. Move seat to full forward position and install rear mounting bolts. Torque all mounting bolts to specification.

    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  13. 13
    Reconnect battery and test
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and torque to specification. Start the vehicle and turn on the seat heater function. Allow 2-3 minutes for heating element to warm up. Verify even heating across the seat surface without hot spots or cold zones. Test all seat adjustment functions.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all hog rings are properly secured with no sharp edges protruding that could damage upholstery or injure occupants.
  2. Verify seat cover is evenly tensioned with no wrinkles or bunching that could indicate heater element misalignment.
  3. Confirm all seat mounting bolts are torqued to specification for occupant safety.
  4. Test all seat functions including fore/aft adjustment, recline, and height adjustment (if equipped) before returning vehicle to service.

Verification

  • Turn on seat heater and verify illumination of heater indicator light on switch.
  • After 3-5 minutes of operation, verify seat surface is warming evenly across entire heated area.
  • Check for proper operation of all heater settings (low/high if equipped).
  • Ensure no burning smell or excessive heat which could indicate short circuit or improper installation.
  • Verify seat adjustments and airbag warning light (should not be illuminated) function normally.
