Parts
- Door speaker (6.5 inch) × 1 — Use OEM specification or aftermarket equivalent
- Door panel clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge
- Identify which door speaker needs replacement (front or rear)
- Roll down the window partially to provide access if needed
Procedure
- 1Remove door panel screwsLocate and remove the Phillips screw inside the door pull handle. Remove the screw behind the interior door handle trim piece. On front doors, there may be an additional screw near the window switch panel.
- 2Remove window switch assembly (front doors only)Use a panel removal tool to carefully pry up the window switch assembly from the front edge. Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the release tab and pulling straight up. Set aside carefully to avoid damage.
- 3Release door panel clipsStarting at the bottom rear corner of the door panel, insert a panel removal tool between the door panel and metal door frame. Work your way around the perimeter, releasing each clip with gentle outward pressure. There are approximately 8-10 clips around the door panel perimeter.
- 4Remove door panelOnce all clips are released, lift the door panel upward to disengage it from the window sill, then pull away from the door. Disconnect any remaining electrical connectors (door lock switch, courtesy lamp) by pressing release tabs. Set the door panel on a protected surface.
- 5Peel back moisture barrierCarefully peel back the plastic moisture barrier sheet from the speaker area only. The barrier is typically attached with adhesive. Do not remove it completely; just fold back enough to access the speaker mounting area.
- 6Disconnect speaker electrical connectorLocate the speaker electrical connector and press the release tab while pulling the connector straight off the speaker terminals. Note the connector orientation for reinstallation.
- 7Remove speaker mounting screwsRemove the three or four Phillips screws securing the speaker to the door frame. Support the speaker while removing the final screw to prevent it from falling inside the door cavity.
- 8Remove old speakerPull the speaker out through the opening in the door frame. If installing an aftermarket speaker, compare the mounting hole pattern and depth to ensure compatibility with the door mounting location.
- 9Install new speakerPosition the new speaker in the door frame opening, aligning the mounting holes. Ensure the speaker is oriented correctly with the connector accessible. Install and tighten the mounting screws in a cross pattern to ensure even seating. Do not overtighten plastic mounting tabs.
- 10Connect speaker electrical connectorPlug the electrical connector onto the new speaker terminals until it clicks into place. Verify the connection is secure by gently tugging on the connector.
- 11Test speaker operationReconnect the negative battery terminal temporarily. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position and test the speaker by adjusting the balance/fader settings to isolate that specific speaker. Verify proper sound output before proceeding.
- 12Reseal moisture barrier and reinstall door panelPress the moisture barrier back into place, ensuring good adhesive contact around the speaker area. Reconnect all door panel electrical connectors. Align the door panel with the window sill and push down to engage the top edge, then press firmly around the perimeter to seat all clips. Reinstall all screws and the window switch assembly.
Reassembly
- Ensure all door panel clips are properly seated and the panel is flush with the door frame
- Verify all screws are reinstalled in their original locations
- Test all door functions including window operation, door locks, and interior lights
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal if disconnected for testing
Verification
- Test speaker by playing audio at various volume levels and frequencies to ensure no distortion or rattling
- Adjust balance and fader controls to verify the replaced speaker is functioning properly
- Verify door panel is secure with no loose clips or rattles when closing the door
- Check that all door-mounted switches and controls operate normally
