Procedure
- 1Remove steering wheel and airbag modulePry out side covers on steering wheel to access airbag module mounting screws. Remove screws and carefully pull airbag module toward you. Disconnect airbag connector and horn connector. Use masking tape to mark exact alignment position of steering wheel to shaft. Remove steering wheel nut and use steering wheel puller to remove wheel from shaft. Do not strike shaft with hammer.⚠️Handle airbag module with care. Always place airbag face-up on a clean surface, never face-down. Mishandling can cause accidental deployment.
- 2Remove lower instrument panel trim and knee bolsterRemove screws securing lower dash trim panel below steering column. Carefully pull panel away using trim tools to release retaining clips. Remove knee bolster by removing mounting screws and disconnecting any electrical connectors. Set panels aside in safe location.
- 3Remove steering column coversRemove screws securing upper and lower steering column covers. Separate covers carefully to avoid breaking plastic tabs. Disconnect any wiring harnesses routed through covers. Store cover screws in organized manner for reassembly.Torque specCover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 4Disconnect electrical connectors from columnLocate and disconnect all electrical connectors on the steering column including: clockspring connector, ignition switch connector, column lock connector, wiper/turn signal multifunction switch connectors, and any lighting or accessory switches. Label each connector with tape to ensure correct reassembly. Release any wire harness clips securing wiring to column.⚠The clockspring connector must be handled carefully. Damage to clockspring will disable airbag and cruise control functions.
- 5Mark and disconnect intermediate shaft couplingLocate intermediate shaft U-joint coupling at base of steering column where it connects to steering gear. Use masking tape or paint marker to create clear alignment marks on both the column shaft and intermediate shaft. These marks are critical for proper reassembly. Remove pinch bolt securing coupling using appropriate socket. Do not allow intermediate shaft to rotate or drop after disconnection.⚠️CRITICAL: Alignment marks on intermediate shaft coupling MUST be precisely maintained. Misalignment will cause steering wheel off-center condition and potential handling problems.Torque specPinch Bolt30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- 6Remove ignition switch assemblyIf ignition switch is being transferred to new column, remove mounting bolts securing ignition switch to column. Note exact position and orientation before removal. If column includes integrated ignition, skip this step.Torque specIgnition Switch Bolts5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 7Remove steering column mounting fastenersSupport steering column with one hand to prevent sudden drop. Locate upper and lower column mounting bolts securing column to instrument panel support structure. There are typically 2-4 mounting bolts. Remove bolts while maintaining support of column assembly.⚠Steering column is heavier than it appears. Ensure secure grip before removing final mounting bolt to prevent column from falling and causing injury or damage.Torque specSteering Column Bolts30 Nm (22 lb-ft)Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 8Remove steering column from vehicleCarefully maneuver steering column assembly downward and out from under instrument panel. Guide column to avoid snagging on wiring or trim pieces. Inspect mounting bracket areas and firewall seal for damage. Clean mounting surfaces in preparation for new column installation.
- 9Prepare and install new steering columnTransfer any necessary components from old column to new column (ignition switch, multifunction switches, etc.) if not pre-installed. Verify new column is correct part number for this vehicle. Apply light coating of white lithium grease to intermediate shaft splines. Carefully maneuver new column into position under instrument panel, aligning with mounting bracket holes.⚠Ensure clockspring is centered before installation. New columns typically ship with clockspring centering pin or tape - do not remove until column is fully installed and aligned.
- 10Install column mounting boltsInstall all steering column mounting bolts hand-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Once all bolts are started, torque mounting bolts to specification in a cross-pattern sequence to ensure even clamping force. Verify column moves smoothly through full tilt and telescoping range if equipped.Torque specSteering Column Bolts30 Nm (22 lb-ft)Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 11Connect intermediate shaft couplingAlign marks made during disassembly on intermediate shaft and column shaft. Slide coupling together ensuring proper engagement. Verify alignment marks match exactly. Install new pinch bolt and torque to specification. Double-check that coupling is fully seated and marks remain aligned after torquing.⚠️VERIFY alignment marks match precisely. Incorrect alignment creates steering wheel misalignment that may not be correctable with alignment adjustment alone.Torque specPinch Bolt30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect all electrical connectorsReconnect all electrical connectors to column in reverse order of removal. Verify each connector clicks firmly into place. Route wiring harnesses through proper clips to prevent interference with column movement. Remove clockspring centering device if present on new column.
- 13Reinstall steering wheel and airbagAlign steering wheel to shaft using marks made during removal. Install steering wheel ensuring proper engagement with splines. Install and torque steering wheel nut to specification. Reconnect horn and airbag connectors. Position airbag module and install mounting screws to specification. Replace side covers on steering wheel.⚠️Ensure airbag connector is fully seated before installing module. Partial connection can cause airbag malfunction or unintended deployment.
