This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the steering wheel on a 2015 Kia Forte with 1.8L I4 engine, including proper airbag system disarming and steering wheel alignment.

Warnings

⚠️Improper airbag handling can cause deployment and serious injury. Wait minimum 3 minutes after battery disconnect before proceeding.
⚠️Never strike the steering wheel or column during removal as this may damage the clockspring or deploy the airbag.
Failure to center the clockspring will cause it to break during steering operation, disabling airbag and horn functions.
Keep airbag module face-up on a clean, padded surface away from work area. Never place items on top of airbag.

Parts

  • Steering wheel (if replacing) × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Clockspring (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
  2. Turn steering wheel to center position with front wheels pointing straight ahead
  3. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
  4. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 3 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge
  5. Mark steering wheel and column alignment with tape or marker for proper reinstallation
  6. Prepare clean, padded surface away from work area to place airbag module face-up

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access airbag module mounting bolts
From behind the steering wheel, locate the two access holes on either side of the wheel. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into each access hole to release the airbag module spring clips. Gently pull the airbag module away from the steering wheel hub.
  2. 2
    Disconnect airbag electrical connectors
With the airbag module partially removed, locate the electrical connector(s) on the back of the module. Press the connector release tab and carefully disconnect the airbag connector and horn connector (if applicable). Remove the airbag module completely and place it face-up on the prepared padded surface away from the work area.
Handle airbag module carefully by the edges only. Never carry it by the wires or place it face-down.
  3. 3
    Remove steering wheel mounting nut
Using a 19mm socket, remove the steering wheel mounting nut at the center of the steering wheel. Keep the nut for reinstallation. Verify your alignment marks are clearly visible on both the steering wheel and column shaft.

  4. 4
    Remove steering wheel from shaft
Grip the steering wheel firmly with both hands at 3 and 9 o'clock positions. Pull the wheel straight back with steady pressure while rocking it gently side to side. If the wheel is stuck, use a proper steering wheel puller to avoid damaging the shaft or clockspring. Never strike the wheel or shaft with a hammer.
⚠️Do not use excessive force or impact tools. Damage to the clockspring or column may result.
  5. 5
    Disconnect clockspring connector
Once the steering wheel is free, carefully guide it back to access the clockspring connector behind it. Press the connector release tab and disconnect the clockspring electrical connector from the steering wheel wiring harness. Fully remove the steering wheel from the vehicle.
Do not rotate the clockspring from its centered position while the steering wheel is removed.
  6. 6
    Inspect and center clockspring
Inspect the clockspring for any damage or binding. If installing a new steering wheel or if the clockspring was rotated, verify the clockspring is centered: the front wheels should be straight ahead and the clockspring alignment marks should align, or you should feel equal resistance rotating in both directions from center. Most clocksprings have colored centering indicators visible through a window.
  7. 7
    Install steering wheel onto shaft
Align the new or existing steering wheel with your alignment marks on the column shaft. Route the clockspring connector through the steering wheel center opening. Slide the steering wheel onto the shaft, ensuring the splines engage properly and the wheel is fully seated against the clockspring housing.
  8. 8
Connect clockspring and install mounting nut
Connect the clockspring electrical connector to the steering wheel wiring harness. Install the steering wheel mounting nut and torque to specification using a calibrated torque wrench. Verify the steering wheel alignment marks match and the wheel is centered.

  9. 9
    Reinstall airbag module
Connect the horn connector and airbag electrical connector to the back of the airbag module. Verify connectors are fully seated and locked. Carefully align the airbag module with the steering wheel hub and press firmly until the spring clips on both sides engage with audible clicks.
Ensure all wiring is properly routed and not pinched between the airbag module and steering wheel.
  10. 10
    Reconnect battery and test
Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the ignition to ON position without starting the engine. Verify the airbag warning light illuminates briefly then turns off after approximately 6 seconds, indicating proper system function. Test horn operation and all steering wheel controls.

Reassembly

  1. Installation is performed in reverse order of removal
  2. Always use a torque wrench for the steering wheel mounting nut to ensure proper retention and airbag deployment geometry
  3. Verify clockspring is properly centered before final installation to prevent damage during steering operation

Verification

  • Turn ignition ON and confirm airbag warning light performs normal self-test (illuminates then extinguishes after 6 seconds)
  • Test horn function by pressing center of steering wheel
  • Test all steering wheel-mounted controls including cruise control, audio, and phone buttons if equipped
  • Turn steering wheel fully left and right to verify smooth operation without binding or unusual noises from clockspring
  • Verify steering wheel is centered when driving straight ahead
  • If airbag light remains on, retrieve diagnostic codes and verify clockspring and airbag connectors are properly seated
