This procedure covers the replacement of tail light bulbs on a 2015 Kia Forte, accessed from inside the trunk compartment without removing the exterior assembly.

Warnings

Allow bulbs to cool completely before removal if vehicle was recently operated to prevent burns.
ℹ️Avoid touching the glass portion of new halogen bulbs with bare fingers as oil from skin can cause premature failure; use clean cloth or gloves.

Tools required

Phillips head screwdriver
Flat-blade trim tool
Clean cloth or gloves

Parts

  • Tail light bulb (brake/turn signal) × 1 — 7443 or 3157 type bulb - verify before purchase
  • Tail light bulb (reverse light) × 1 — 921 or 912 type bulb - verify before purchase

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn off all lights
  2. Open trunk to access interior tail light assembly area
  3. Identify which bulb needs replacement (brake, turn signal, reverse, or tail light)

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access tail light assembly
Locate the fabric or carpeted trunk liner panel behind the tail light assembly on the appropriate side (driver or passenger). Look for a small access panel or removable section directly behind the tail light housing.
  2. 2
    Remove access panel
Carefully pull back or remove the trunk liner access panel. Some models may have plastic clips or fasteners that need to be carefully pried out using a flat-blade trim tool. If present, remove any Phillips screws securing the access panel. Set fasteners aside in a safe location.
  3. 3
    Locate bulb socket
With the access panel removed, you will see the rear of the tail light assembly with multiple bulb sockets inserted into it. Identify the correct socket: brake/tail light is typically the largest socket at top, turn signal in middle, and reverse light (clear lens) at bottom position.
  4. 4
    Remove bulb socket
Grasp the bulb socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn (about 45 degrees) until it releases from the housing. Pull the socket straight out of the tail light assembly. Do not pull on the wiring harness.
  5. 5
    Remove failed bulb
For wedge-base bulbs (reverse light), gently pull the bulb straight out of the socket. For bayonet-style bulbs (brake/tail/turn signal), press the bulb in slightly and rotate counterclockwise to release, then pull out. Inspect the socket for any corrosion, moisture, or damage.
  6. 6
    Install new bulb
Using a clean cloth or while wearing gloves, insert the new bulb into the socket. For wedge-base bulbs, push straight in until fully seated. For bayonet-style bulbs, align the pins with the socket slots, push in, and rotate clockwise until it locks into place. Ensure the bulb is secure and fully seated.
  7. 7
    Test bulb operation
Before reinstalling the socket, have an assistant activate the corresponding light function (brake, turn signal, or reverse) or turn on the ignition and test the function yourself. Verify the new bulb illuminates properly.
  8. 8
    Reinstall bulb socket
Insert the bulb socket back into the tail light assembly, aligning the tabs on the socket with the slots in the housing. Push the socket in and rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn until it locks firmly into place. Gently tug on the socket to confirm it is secure.
  9. 9
    Replace access panel
Reinstall the trunk liner access panel by reversing the removal process. If equipped with screws, ensure they are snug but do not overtighten to avoid damaging the plastic clips or trim. Press any plastic clips back into position until they are fully seated.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all trunk liner panels and access covers are properly secured
  2. Verify no tools or parts are left in the trunk compartment

Verification

  • Test all tail light functions with ignition on: parking lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights
  • Walk around vehicle to visually confirm proper operation of both tail light assemblies
  • Verify no moisture or condensation is visible inside the tail light lens
  • Confirm trunk liner access panel is flush and secure
